    Personaggi storici in scena

    No full text

Practices of conversion in South India in the 16th and 17th centuries: strategies and narratives

    No full text
In the 16th and 17th centuries, many Catholic missionaries arrived in the south of India with the aim of converting the native peoples. They belonged to different religious orders: Jesuits, Franciscans, Carmelites, and after 1622 these were joined by secular priests directly subject to the Roman Congregation of Propaganda Fide. The missionaries effected numerous conversions, but the status of converted Indians was ambiguous: a sort of ‘in between identity’ which made it difficult for them to live comfortably in relation to either the native community or the Portuguese colonisers. This chapter explores the different practices of conversion in South India with particular regard to the narrative strategies used by missionaries to communicate their victories and defeats and to the theme of violence

Prospero hierae (Hyacinthaceae), a new species from Marettimo Island (Sicily)

A new species, Prospero hierae C. Brullo, S. Brullo, Giusso, Pavone & Salmeri (Hyacinthaceae), from Island of Marettimo (Egadi Archipelago, Sicily) is described and illustrated. Its chromosome number (2n = 14), leaf anatomy and ecology are examined. This small species with glaucous, adaxially flat leaves is closely related with the taxa belonging to the Prospero autumnale group and, in particular, it shows more affinities with P. corsicum, P. pulchellum and P. minimum

    Introduction

Sacrifice has long been a central topic in scholarly debate. Since the publication of Marcel Mauss and Henri Hubert's groundbreaking work in 1898-99, the concept has gained prominence as a distinct theme in comparative religion, anthropology, and the history of religions. Throughout the twentieth century, many distinguished scholars and intellectuals examined the meaning and function of sacrifice to better understand various aspects of human cognition and social interactions. While some explored its connections to violence—particularly forms of self-inflicted violence, such as martyrdom—others sought to disentangle the concept from violent practices altogether. Building on this rich tradition, this collection of articles gathers contributions from leading scholars who explore the theme of sacrifice, examining its diverse meanings and roles across various religious traditions. While the book places particular emphasis on the history of Christianity and the early modern period, it also provides valuable insights into a broad spectrum of religious traditions, including Judaism, Islam, Greek and ancient religions, as well as Japanese religions. Its geographical scope spans regions such as India, China, Africa, and Brazil, offering a truly global perspective.By mapping the varied interpretations and transformations of sacrifice in the early modern period, this book seeks to illuminate its evolving significance. It also strives to offer a comparative framework that highlights the concept's complexity and adaptability across cultural and historical contexts

On the seven non-isomorphic solutions of the fifteen schoolgirl problem

In this paper we give a simple and effective tool to analyze a given Kirkman triple system of order 15 and determine which of the seven well-known non-isomorphic KTS(15)s it is isomorphic to. Our technique refines and improves the lacing of distinct parallel classes introduced by F. N. Cole, by means of the notion of residual triple defined by G. Falcone and the present author in a previous paper. Unlike Cole's original lacing scheme, our algorithm allows one to distinguish two KTS(15)s also in the harder case where the two systems have the same underlying Steiner triple system. In the special case where the common STS is #19, an alternative method is given by means of the 1-factorizations of the complete graph K_8 associated to the two KTSs. Moreover, we present three new visual solutions to the schoolgirl problem, and we catalogue most of the classical (or interesting) solutions in the literature in terms of what KTS(15)s they are isomorphic to. This paper provides background on a classical topic, while shedding new light on the problem as well
