    A child of the Academy? : investigating Euclid's philosophical background

    A prevalent idea among contemporary scholars is that Euclid belonged to, or was heavily influenced by the Platonic philosophical tradition. To a certain extent, this impression is not new; the quest for Euclid's philosophical background was probably triggered and enhanced by his late commentators, Greeks and Arabs, who appear confident that he had one. For instance, al-Qifti writes: 'Euclid...called the author of geometry, a philosopher of somewhat ancient date...' and al-Nadim in the Fihrist names Euclid as '...one of the mathematical philosophers...' Proclus, five centuries earlier than al-Nadim, was more specific: '[Euclid] was a follower of Plato by choice, and familiar with this philosophy'.     A Holistic Approach for Privacy Protection in E-Government

    Improving e-government services by using data more effectively is a major focus globally. It requires Public Administrations to be transparent, accountable and provide trustworthy services that improve citizen confidence. However, despite all the technological advantages on developing such services and analysing security and privacy concerns, the literature does not provide evidence of frameworks and platforms that enable privacy analysis, from multiple perspectives, and take into account citizens' needs with regards to transparency and usage of citizens information. This paper presents the VisiOn (Visual Privacy Management in User Centric Open Requirements) platform, an outcome of a H2020 European Project. Our objective is to enable Public Administrations to analyse privacy and security from different perspectives, including requirements, threats, trust and law compliance. Finally, our platform-supported approach introduces the concept of Privacy Level Agreement (PLA) which allows Public Administrations to customise their privacy policies based on the privacy preferences of each citizen

The author of this article analyzes the work&nbsp;of some of the most important playwrights of the period (Rina Katselli, Michalis Pitsillidis,&nbsp;Panos Ioannidis, Michalis Pasiardis and Yiorgos Neophytou) and describes their main&nbsp;carcteristics.     Information systems exist in every aspect of our life. Therefore we need to make sure that users trust these systems in order to continue to use them. However, developing a trustworthy system is a challenging task for the right operation of the system as well as system's acceptance from the users' perspective. Ensuring well-placed trust always depends on the trustworthiness of the trustee, i.e. the system. Therefore, properties that belong to the trustworthiness highly influence to the development of trust. Nevertheless, trust has to be considered from a holistic perspective, since it covers a wide range of issues that belong to different disciplines. In this paper, we present the relevant properties of trust and trustworthiness from a holistic perspective and we define trustworthiness as the competence and ability of a system.</p

    Security and Privacy Requirements Methodologies are considered an important part of the development process of systems, especially for the ones that contain and process a large amount of critical information and inevitably needs to remain secure and thus, ensuring privacy. These methodologies provide techniques, methods, and norms for tackling security and privacy issues in Information Systems. In this process, the utilisation of effective, clear and understandable modelling languages with sufficient notation is of utmost importance, since the produced models are used not only among IT experts or among security specialists, but also for communication among various stakeholders, in business environments or among novices in an academic environment. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of a Security and Privacy Requirements Engineering methodology, namely Secure Tropos on the nine principles of the Theory of Notation. Our qualitative analysis revealed a partial satisfaction of these principles.</p

    Cyber-attack path discovery in a dynamic supply chain maritime risk management system

    Maritime port infrastructures rely on the use of information systems for collaboration, while a vital part of collaborating is to provide protection to these systems. Attack graph analysis and risk assessment provide information that can be used to protect the assets of a network from cyber-attacks. Furthermore, attack graphs provide functionality that can be used to identify vulnerabilities in a network and how these can be exploited by potential attackers. Existing attack graph generation methods are inadequate in satisfying certain requirements necessary in a dynamic supply chain risk management environment, since they do not consider variables that assist in exploring specific network parts that satisfy certain criteria, such as the entry and target points, the propagation length and the location and capability of the potential attacker. In this paper, we present a cyber-attack path discovery method that is used as a component of a maritime risk management system. The method uses constraints and Depth-first search to effectively generate attack graphs that the administrator is interested in. To support our method and to show its effectiveness we have evaluated it using real data from a maritime supply chain

    SecTro:A CASE tool for modelling security in requirements engineering using Secure Tropos

    Secure Tropos is an extension of Tropos methodology, which considers security throughout the whole development process. The main concept of Secure Tropos is the security constraint that captures constraints regarding security. Similarly, the concepts of dependency, goal, task, resource, and capability were also extended with security in mind. In this paper we present the SecTro tool, a CASE tool that guides and supports the developers in the construction of the appropriate models of Secure Tropos.</p

    Inverse identification of buffeting and self-excited wind loads on the hardanger bridge from acceleration data

    The traditional wind load assessment for long-span bridges rely on assumed models for the wind field and aerodynamic coefficients from wind tunnel tests, which usually introduces some uncertainties. It is therefore desired to develop tools that can utilize full-scale vibration response data from existing bridges in order to study the wind loading in detail for in-situ conditions. This paper presents a novel case study of inverse identification of dynamic wind loads on the 1310 m long Hardanger bridge, a suspension bridge equipped with a network of accelerometers. The identification method used is an extented Kalman-type filter for joint input, state, and parameter estimation. A system model considering the still-air modes in addition to a quasi-steady submodel for the self-excited forces of the bridge is presente.     The aim of this paper is to focus on some crucial problems concerning the understanding of the new cultural form called "computer games". There are affinities between most computer games (at least the most popular ones) and the literary or cinematic text in that a story of some sort is in­volved in all of them. In the comparison between cinema texts and com­puter games there is even the shared modality of an audiovisual mode of representation.However, there is a great deal of difference in the way the reader / viewer in literature and cinema and the player in computer games interacts with the respective text in question: modes of identification with characters, immersion in the fictional and game world, passive or more active degrees of interaction, etc. The question is whether semiotics as a viable method­ology can assist in the explication of such textual relationships where the player (as reader of her text) assumes authorial characteristics and to what extent such activity affects the ontological status of player (as reader-cum- author) vis-a-vis the real / fictive gameworld. To limit my scope I elect to examine simulation and strategy games, also called "god-games", which offer an omniscient third-person point of view and a flat grid-like gameworld; in particular I focus on a strategy, turn based, simulation game, Rome Total War™, which offers an additional research parameter, that of History
