God and Being: An Enquiry
Western theology has long regarded 'Being' as a category pre-eminently applicable to God, the supreme Being who is also the source of all existence. This idea was challenged in the later philosophy of Martin Heidegger and identified with the position he called 'ontotheology'. Heidegger's critique was repeated and radicalized in so-called postmodern thought, to the point that many theologians and philosophers of religion now want to talk instead of God as 'beyond Being' or 'without Being'. Against this background, God and Being attempts to look again at why the ideas of God and Being got associated in the first place and to investigate whether the critique of ontotheology really does require us to abandon this link. After exploring how this apparently abstract idea has informed Christian views of salvation and of the relationship between God and world, George Pattison examines how such categories as time, space, language, human relationships and embodiment affect our understanding of God and Being. Pattison concludes that whilst Heidegger's critique has considerable force, it remains legitimate to speak of God as Being under certain restricted conditions. The most important of these is that God is better conceived in terms of purely possible Being rather than (as in classic Christian theology) 'actual' Being. This leaves open possibilities of dialogue with, e.g., non-theistic religious traditions and with science that are foreclosed by traditional conceptions. Ultimately, however, all basic religious ideas must issue from and be seen to serve the requirements of embodied love
Kierkegaard and the Theology of the Nineteenth Century: The Paradox and the 'Point of Contact'
his study shows how Kierkegaard's mature theological writings reflect his engagement with the wide range of theological positions which he encountered as a student, including German and Danish Romanticism, Hegelianism and the writings of Fichte and Schleiermacher. George Pattison draws on both major and lesser-known works to show the complexity and nuances of Kierkegaard's theological position, which remained closer to Schleiermacher's affirmation of religion as a 'feeling of absolute dependence' than to the Barthian denial of any 'point of contact', with which he is often associated. Pattison also explores ways in which Kierkegaard's theological thought can be related to thinkers such as Heidegger and John Henry Newman, and its continuing relevance to present-day debates about secular faith. His volume will be of great interest to scholars and students of philosophy and theology

Rietveld refinement of the zorite structure of the ETS-4 molecular sieves
The crystal structure of ETS-4 titanosilicate [Na9Si12Ti5O38(OH). 12H(2)O] was refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and the Rietveld method (R-P=0.050; R-wP=0.063; R-B=0.169). Our diffraction data provide direct evidence that ETS-4 has the same structure as the zorite mineral. The framework of zorite can be described as nenadkevichite-like chains, laterally connected by 4[SiO4]/[TiO6] units, corresponding to two different chemical environments for Si. Similar to previous observations, a discrepancy was found between the population ratio of Si positions as calculated by the occupancy refinement of atomic sites related to these two environments, and that inferred from Si-29 MAS NMR. This is tentatively explained here on the basis of the large amounts of protons in the proximity of the Si2 site as indicated by Si-29 CP/MAS NMR. The low thermal stability of the zorite/ETS-4 structure is explained in terms of relevance of the hydrogen bonding between extra framework water molecules and framework oxygens
Growing Patterned, Cross-linked Nanoscale Polymer Films from Organic and Inorganic Surfaces Using Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization
The ability to modify substrates with thin polymer films allows for the tailoring of surface properties, and through combination of patterning finds use in a large variety of applications such as electronics and lab-on-chip devices. Although many techniques can be used to afford polymer-modified surfaces such as surface-initiated polymerization or layer-by-layer methodologies, their stability in a wide range of environments as well as their ability to target specific chemistry are critical factors to enable their successful application. In this paper, we report a facile technique in creating nanoscale polymer thin films using solid-state continuous assembly of polymers via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ssCAPROMP) directly from surfaces functionalized through silanization. Using a polymeric precursor that includes norbornene moieties, a highly dense cross-linked network of polymer can be grown in a bottom-up fashion to afford thin films from an olefin-terminated silanized planar surface. Such nanotechnology affords films retaining the desirable qualities of previously reported methods while, at the same time, being covalently bound to the substrate: they are virtually pinhole free and can be reinitiated multiple times. By combining this process with microcontact printing, patterned films can be created by either the patterned deposition of a catalyst or by controlling the surface silanization chemistry and placement of olefin-terminated and nonreactive silanes. Additionally, patterned ssCAPROMP films were grown from SU-8 by selectively functionalizing the surface through masking and lift-off processes after the silanization step, thereby spatially controlling the surface-initiation, and subsequent polymer film formation. These patterned films expand the capabilities of the CAPROMP process and offer advantages over other film formation techniques in processes where patterned substrates and modified but robust surface chemistries are utilized
