    Crazy, sad or just different: evolving representations of mental illness and the mentally ill during psychology education

    Mental illness is an issue of concern to the general community, and is a major focus of professions such as psychology. Such professions demand extensive education and training, with the aim to develop a scientific understanding of mental illness that is portrayed in contrast to socially shared knowledge, or social representations. However, some aspects of these social representations may persist in conjunction with the development of scientific knowledge. The current study used a multimethodological approach to elucidate how such social representations may be transformed or modified by relevant education in psychology. Psychology students, non-psychology students and clinical psychologists participated in the current study to assess groups at different levels of psychology education and training. Four forms of data collection were used as part of a multimethodological approach. Intra-individual methods focused on the use of repertory grids and word associations to explore responses to the mentally ill as well as other relevant individuals such as the physically ill and mental health professionals. Inter-individual methods focused on social interaction in response to a case vignette of an individual with a mental disorder and group discussion within the educational setting. Several core themes described in previous research were identified consistently across different groups and different methodologies. Negative emotion, such as distress and sadness, impaired functioning, and the need for assistance were commonly used as indicators of mental health problems. One of the most prominent themes, however, was the notion of difference and distance. The mentally ill person was consistently differentiated, particularly from the self, even when the label of mentally ill was not imposed. The importance of the self was especially evident, acting as a means to define normality and difference. Several differences were also noticeable between different levels of education. A changing representation was evident from understandings of the mentally ill as crazy, viewed in a more stereotypical, negative and critical light, to representations of the mentally ill as sad, typified by greater sympathy. Social representations may therefore influence the social response to the mentally ill. Increasing education associated with scientific understandings was also characterised by exclusive technical discourse, a feature that may distance the psychologist from the general community. These findings are particularly relevant to how education affects social representations of mental illness and the mentally ill, as public campaigns seek to change community attitudes and understandings. In addition, there are particular implications for psychologists, in training or at work. While a primary goal for the psychologist is to empathise and connect with the individuals they are intending to assist, the emphasis on difference, in both social and scientific understandings of the mentally ill, may act as a barrier. The education and professional development of psychologists should incorporate an understanding of how such representations may influence professional practice

    Virus-Enabled Biosensor for Human Serum Albumin

    The label-free detection of human serum albumin (HSA) in aqueous buffer is demonstrated using a simple, monolithic, two-electrode electrochemical biosensor. In this device, both millimeter-scale electrodes are coated with a thin layer of a composite containing M13 virus particles and the electronically conductive polymer poly­(3,4-ethylenedioxy thiophene) or PEDOT. These virus particles, engineered to selectively bind HSA, serve as receptors in this biosensor. The resistance component of the electrical impedance, Zre, measured between these two electrodes provides electrical transduction of HSA binding to the virus-PEDOT film. The analysis of sample volumes as small as 50 μL is made possible using a microfluidic cell. Upon exposure to HSA, virus-PEDOT films show a prompt increase in Zre within 5 s and a stable Zre signal within 15 min. HSA concentrations in the range from 100 nM to 5 μM are detectable. Sensor-to-sensor reproducibility of the HSA measurement is characterized by a coefficient-of-variance (COV) ranging from 2% to 8% across this entire concentration range.     Virus Bioresistor (VBR) for Detection of Bladder Cancer Marker DJ‑1 in Urine at 10 pM in One Minute

    DJ-1, a 20.7 kDa protein, is overexpressed in people who have bladder cancer (BC). Its elevated concentration in urine allows it to serve as a marker for BC. However, no biosensor for the detection of DJ-1 has been demonstrated. Here, we describe a virus bioresistor (VBR) capable of detecting DJ-1 in urine at a concentration of 10 pM in 1 min. The VBR consists of a pair of millimeter-scale gold electrodes that measure the electrical impedance of an ultrathin (≈ 150–200 nm), two-layer polymeric channel. The top layer of this channel (90–105 nm in thickness) consists of an electrodeposited virus-PEDOT (PEDOT is poly­(3,4-ethylene­dioxythiophene)) composite containing embedded M13 virus particles that are engineered to recognize and bind to the target protein of interest, DJ-1. The bottom layer consists of spin-coated PEDOT–PSS (poly­(styrenesulfonate)). Together, these two layers constitute a current divider. We demonstrate here that reducing the thickness of the bottom PEDOT–PSS layer increases its resistance and concentrates the resistance drop of the channel in the top virus-PEDOT layer, thereby increasing the sensitivity of the VBR and enabling the detection of DJ-1. Large signal amplitudes coupled with the inherent simplicity of the VBR sensor design result in high signal-to-noise (S/N > 100) and excellent sensor-to-sensor reproducibility characterized by coefficients of variation in the range of 3–7% across the DJ-1 binding curve down to a concentration of 30 pM, near the 10 pM limit of detection (LOD), encompassing four orders of magnitude in concentration

There are jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much. On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to the profession I love and shaped who I have become. At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family strives to find the best in themselves and others. I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient. But very thankfully, and in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport. The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football, volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! Myers Concert and Stage Bands were unable to perform this year due to COVID, but we were lucky enough to still be able to play our instruments. Vince Gassi, a composer from Toronto, was commissioned by the W.R. Myers Band Parent Association to write a piece for the Concert Band. The band students met with Mr. Gassi via Zoom in October to talk to him about the piece and the writing process. He completed the piece for us in January and we began working on it. Again the band students met with Mr. Gassi on Zoom for him to listen to us play and give feedback. But unfortunately due to the COVID restrictions, we were unable to premier the piece. Hopefully, next year we will be able to play Tomorrow Shines Soon. The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's, industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. That qualified Sayge to go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Way to go Sayge!! Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year so far.
