Search for very high energy Gamma radiation from the Starburst Galaxy IC 342
This thesis describes a search for very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission\ud
from the starburst galaxy IC 342. The analysis was based on data from the\ud
2003 — 2004 observing season recorded using the Whipple 10-metre imaging\ud
atmospheric Cherenkov telescope located on Mount Hopkins in southern Arizona.\ud
IC 342 may be classed as a non-blazar type galaxy and to date only a few\ud
such galaxies (M 87, Cen A, M 82 and NGC 253) have been detected as VHE\ud
gamma-ray sources. Analysis of approximately 24 hours of good quality IC\ud
342 data, consisting entirely of ON/OFF observations, was carried out using a\ud
number of methods (standard Supercuts, optimised Supercuts, scaled optimised\ud
Supercuts and the multivariate kernel analysis technique). No evidence for TeV\ud
gamma-ray emission from IC 342 was found. The significance was 0.6 a with\ud
a nominal rate of 0.04 ± 0.06 gamma rays per minute. The flux upper limit\ud
above 600 GeV (at 99.9 % confidence) was determined to be 5.5 x 10-8 m-2\ud
s-1, corresponding to 8 % of the Crab Nebula flux in the same energy range

Identifying The Flap Side-Edge Noise Contribution Of A Wind Turbine Blade Section With An Adaptive Trailing-Edge
Active trailing-edge technology is a promising application for localized load alleviation of large-diameter wind turbine rotors, accomplished using one or more control surfaces in the rotor blade's outer region. This work focuses on identifying noise contributions from the flap side-edge and the trailing edge in a laboratory condition. Measurements were conducted in the Acoustic Wind Tunnel Braunschweig (AWB) at the German Aerospace Center's (DLR) Braunschweig site. The small-scale model has a span of 1200 mm and a chord length of 300 mm. The control surface, a plain flap, has a span of 400 mm and a chord length of 90 mm. Far-field noise was measured using a phased-microphone array for various flow speeds, angles of attack and flap deflection angles. Due to the size of the model and assumed closeness of the sound sources, two noise reduction addons were installed interchangeably: trailing-edge brush and flap side-edge porous foam for sound source identification. Analysis of the far-field noise reveals that, while changes to the flap deflection angle alter the far-field noise spectra, the trailing-edge noise remains the predominant noise source at deflection angles -5° and 5°. No additional noise level was observed from the flap side-edge within the measurable frequency range at these angles. The flap side-edge noise has an increased role for frequency larger than 2 kHz for the larger flap deflection angles of -10° and 10°

Extreme galaxies: TeV gamma-ray emission from the Blazar 1ES 2344+514
This thesis describes an investigation of Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the blazar galaxy 1ES 2344+514, based on data from five observational seasons (1999-2004) using the Whipple 10-metre telescope in southern Arizona. The 65 hours of data consists mostly of tracking observations without
contiguous OFF-source control data. A matching procedure was used to select a surrogate OFF-run compatible with each ON-source observation, to allow for
determination of the background signal. Analyses of the data was carried out using both the standard Supercuts criteria and the multivariate kernel method.
The TeV flux of 1ES 2344+514, above 400 GeV, was determined to be (0.29 ± 0.14)xlO-7 m- 2s-1. To allow a comparison with the flux as determined by HEGRA from 1997 to 2002, the flux above 800 GeV was calculated to be (0.07 ± 0.04)xl0_7m_2s“1. This compares very well with the HEGRA value, althoughit is noted that the uncertainties are a factor of two larger. An estimate of
the spectral index of 1ES 2344 is derived from the quiescent flux values, although the uncertainty on the value is extremely large due to the limited statistics
