Humbert Rising: The Nature and Function of the Two Parts in Lolita
No full textVladimir Nabokov was never one to miss an opportunity of balance, and Lolita is full of balances, repetitions, and oppositions. This is as true of the novel’s larger structure as it is of minutiae. The balance in a name like Humbert Humbert is reflected in the balance of the two parts of the book. In fact, the two parts of the book are vigorous opposites in structure and in tone, and this opposition sustains much of the plot’s considerable energy. Part one is dominated by Humbert’s solipsistic view of those around him, while part two suggests his gradual release from this condition. Thus, in the first part of the novel, Humbert has virtually complete control of the narrative perspective and the reader is expected on the whole to accept his version of the events being related, while in the second part the reader is invited to make a counter-reading, to see Humbert’s perspective as limited and provisional, and to view the other characters as having distinct motivations apart from the enchantment of his imagination. Paradoxically, this allows us to see Humbert himself in a truer relation to the other characters and to take some measure of him in his tragic freedom

No full textThe precipitation of calcium carbonate is studied as a function of the change of partial pressure of CO₂. The experimental results of the kinetics of CaCO₃ precipitation are reported. The influence of the magnesium ion in a solution initially containing 360 mg l⁻¹ of Ca²⁺ and containing increasing amounts of MgCl₂ • 6H₂O (from 0 to 1 080 mg l⁻¹ Mg²⁺) is reported on :
— the nucleation time,
— the initial growth rate,
— the allotropie variety and the shape of the crystals.
The magnesium ion moves the equilibrium system to the right and the aragonite form is precipitated. As for the crystals of calcite which remain, dosages by atomic absorption and X-rays show a calcite containing more and more magnesium as the concentration of Mg²⁺ in the solution increases.On a procédé à une étude expérimentale de la précipitation des carbonates de calcium induite par variation de la pression partielle de CO₂. Les résultats expérimentaux de la cinétique de précipitation de CaCO₃ sont donnés. L'influence de l'ion magnésium introduit sous forme de chlorure et pour des concentrations variant de 0 à 1 080 p. p. m. (Mg²⁺/Ca²⁺ de 0 à 3) nous a permis de noter son influence :
— sur le temps de germination,
— sur la vitesse de croissance,
— sur la variété allotropique et le faciès des cristaux obtenus.
L'influence de l'ion Mg²⁺ se traduit par un déplacement du système d'équilibre vers la droite, ce qui a pour effet de faire apparaître l'aragonite. Quant à la calcite qui reste, des dosages à l'absorption atomique et des diagrammes de rayons X effectués sur les cristaux montrent que l'on obtient une calcite devenant de plus en plus magnésienne avec l'augmentation de la concentration en Mg²⁺ dans la solution.Cailleau Patrick, Dragone Daniel, Girou André, Humbert Louis, Jacquin Christian, Roques Henri.
