Abundance and diversity of marine flora and fauna of protected and unprotected reefs of the Koh Rong Archipelago, Cambodia
Marine protection is advancing rapidly in Cambodia and an example of a privately managed no-take protected area can be found in the Koh Rong Archipelago. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of the Song Saa reserve for conserving species and to identify suitable survey methodologies for effective monitoring and management. Sites within, near and geographically isolated from the marine protected area were surveyed using Reef Check monitoring protocols, with additional monitoring techniques used for comparison. Species abundance and diversity were analysed using a one-way ANOVA. Results indicated significant variation in the density of invertebrates (F2,27 = 4.16, P = 0.027), particularly long-spined sea urchins (Diadema sp.), but no other statistically significant differences were detected among the study sites. Analysis of different survey methodologies found that the Reef Check techniques detected significantly higher species diversity and abundance than photo-quadrats and static point counts, but this analysis did not consider the precision and resolution of the data collected. This assessment was conducted only six years after the Song Saa marine protected area was established, which was not long enough to expect significant changes in species composition. However this study offered the opportunity to analyse the progress of the marine protected area and establish baseline data for future reference

Effectiveness of community and volunteer based coral reef monitoring in Cambodia
1.Globally, coral reef monitoring programmes conducted by volunteer-based organizsations or local communities have the potential to collect large quantities of marine data at low cost. However, many scientists remain sceptical about the ability of these programmes to detect changes in marine systems when compared with professional techniques. 2.A limited number of studies have assessed the efficacy and validity of volunteer-based monitoring, and even fewer have assessed community-based methods. 3.This study in Cambodia investigated the ability of surveyors of different levels of experience to conduct underwater surveys using a simple coral reef methodology in Cambodia. Surveyors were assigned to four experience categories and conducted a series of six 20 x 5 m belt transects using five benthic indicator species. 4.Results indicate decreased variation in marine community assessments with increasing experience, indicating that experience, rather than cultural background, influences survey ability. This suggests that locally based programmes can fill gaps in knowledge with suitable on-going training and assessment
Anne Savage
Sherman recounts the milestones of the career of landscape painter Savage who is an important figure of early Canadian modernism. The author describes how the romantic and spiritual nature of her landscapes reflect a common desire amongst Canadian painters of that period (including the Group of Seven with whom she was affiliated) : to create a truly national painting style. Includes numerous quotes by the artist. Text in French and English. List of works
The challenges of establishing marine protected areas in South East Asia
One of the most important things to understand about marine protected areas, is that they are ultimately designed to alter the way humans interact with their environment. In South East Asia, coastal communities are much more likely to be dependent on marine resources for livelihoods, with limited opportunities for livelihood diversification, compared with coastal communities in more developed countries. Recognising the overwhelming global targets for the protection of marine habitats, there needs to be more consideration for the way that people fit in to the way that conservation programmes are designed and implemented. Bearing in mind the factors that are widely considered to make marine protected areas successful, the governance strategies involved, and the resources needed to implement the number of protected areas required, the situation is extremely complex. Theory suggests that if we implement a large number of protected areas, then it is reasonable to assume that some of them will be successful. However, this is where it is essential to remember the people impacted by protected areas. This chapter seeks to identify a number of the issues facing the effective implementation of conservation strategies, in an effort to identify a path towards effective marine resource management
Some economic and social aspects of residential internet use in Australia
This study constructs a profile of the representative Australian residential Internet user from data obtained from a web-based survey. Survey data indicate the representative user is male, 20 to 40 years of age, highly educated, uses the Internet 8 hrs per week for e-mail and FTP, and has a monthly bill of AUD32. Anordered-logit model relates Internet use to price, sociodemographic and connection capacity variables. Model estimates show the probability of higher Internet use is greater for middle-income households, but declines with age of the user. Policy may be required to enhance access to lower-income groups, and to inform the elderly of the potential capabilities of the new technology. Further, model estimates suggest that Australian Internet subscribers prefer flat-rate pricing (or a combination of flat-rate and usagesensitive pricing) over usage-sensitive pricing schemes. This result is consistent with Australian consumer attitudes toward local telephone and mobile cellular pricing.Residential internet use in Australia, economic and social aspects
Affine wreath product algebras with trace maps of generic parity
The goal of this project is to study the structure and representation theory of affine wreath product algebras An(F). These algebras appear naturally in Heisenberg categorification and generalize many important algebras (degenerate affine Hecke algebras, affine Sergeev algebras and wreath Hecke algebras). The whole class was introduced by D. Rosso and A. Savage in [RS17]. In [Sav20] the second author studied both structure and representations under the condition that the trace map of F is even. In this project we extend the definition for the case where the trace is odd, obtaining ``odd-analogous\'\' results. Since our approach is analogous to Savage\'s, we consider the trace map being of arbitrary parity and unify statements and proofs. Studing the strucure theory, we present a basis for An(F) and compute its center. We also introduce Jucys-Murphy and intertwining elements. Considering a equivalence of categories, we describe the simple An(F)-modules in terms of simple representations of degenerate affine Hecke algebras, affine Sergeev algebras and wreath product algebras. We define the cyclotomic quotients AnC(F) for An(F) and we show that these are Frobenius algebras with an appropriately chosen trace map. We also state a cyclotomic Mackey Theorem and show that AnC(F) is a Frobenius extension of An-1C(F)$

The design and implementation of marine management strategies in Cambodia
This research examines marine management strategies in Cambodia, with the aim of addressing key issues relating to the design, implementation and management of marine protection systems. The establishment of marine protected areas in developing countries is perceived to solve many of the issues currently facing the marine environment. However, in reality this is not the case. A majority of the world's marine protected areas are considered ineffective, with issues relating to the environmental understanding and appropriate governance of such strategies. Implementing marine management is an extremely complex process, with many factors, stakeholders and individual site-specific variables and it has long been understood that an integrated social-ecological approach is preferable. This thesis aims to build a more comprehensive picture of the implementation of marine management strategies into developing communities and addresses a number of research gaps. This thesis provides key information on the current extent and health of coral reefs in the Koh Sdach Archipelago, and identifies changes in the health of those reefs between 2002 and 2013 in the absence of marine management. The socio-economic impacts of the current management programmes used to protect the Cambodian coastal zone have been examined, and identify the perceptions of community members relating to governance, change and threats surrounding marine management. This work highlighted issues relating to the effective governance of areas at multiple institutional levels, stressing the need for increased governmental support and communication within and between management organisations. Finally, the suitability of volunteer and community-based coral reef monitoring was assessed. Despite only being a preliminary study into the potential applications of such systems, the results suggested that the use of both volunteers and community members in the collection of coral reef health data could contribute to the current deficit in monitoring data
A current status assessment of the coral reefs in the Koh Sdach Archipelago, Cambodia
Cambodia is taking steps towards developing a series of marine protected areas to combat increased environmental degradation. The Koh Sdach Archipelago has been highlighted to become the country’s second large marine protected area, and management plans are being developed through collaborations between local communities and national and international conservation organisations. Prior to the implementation of any management programme, however, an up-to-date baseline analysis of the environmental status of the area is helpful, and will allow the development of appropriate site-specific management strategies. This study used a modified form of the Reef Check survey protocol. Results indicated that the coral reefs found throughout the Koh Sdach Archipelago are in good condition, but with some evidence of ecological degradation. Conservation efforts are recommended as a means of preventing future degradation, and encouraging long-term stability within the ecosystem
