Introductory considerations on crop diversity
Modern society faces decreased biodiversity in nature caused by increased uniformity in agriculture, and health related problems with nutrition caused by industrialisation in food production. Conversion to organic farming increases biodiversity, because of diversification in crops and decreased intensity in control of weed and pests, and increase biochemical diversity within food products because of decreased nitrogen application in field. The author argues that the positive effects of in organic farming can be further improved by improved genetic diversity within the crop. Inter-cropping and variety mixtures are already used by some farmers, but diversity within the crop can be further improved by development of composite cross populations, composition of new stabilized populations, and reintroduction of historic varieties and populations
Competing conventions: The Big Branders’ struggle to incorporate new quality conceptions in the Norwegian food market
The paper addresses recent changes in the Norwegian agrifood industry from the analytical perspective of quality conventions. Storper and Salais’ “worlds of production” plus Boltanski and Thévenots’ “orders of worth” are used as a basis for the empirical study. First, the paper discusses how the largest Norwegian branders try to strategically adapt to “novel” quality attributes like health-enhancing food, origin/terroir, environmental sustainability and ethics. Second, the paper investigates the companies’ quality signalling strategy: How are these “novel” qualities communicated to consumers? Multiple options are available: Do they attempt to systematically incorporate “novel qualities” into their private brand equity (“conventionalizing qualities”)? Do they prefer a co-labelling scheme with a third party control, or do they use any other measures for quality signalling? The paper thereby discusses how the largest Norwegian branders in the food sector cope with conflicting and competing quality conventions.Food quality, economics of convention., Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,

Space and the Dynamic Between Openness and Closure: Open strategizing in the TV series Borgen
In this paper we examine how the use of space shapes the dynamic between openness and closure in open strategizing. To do this, we draw from research that has defined organizational space as a process that is both a social product and produces social relations. We analysed the use of space in open strategizing in the Danish TV series and political drama Borgen. In our analysis we focused on three building blocks of space: boundaries, distance and movement, that allowed us to elaborate how the dynamic between openness and closure is shaped. Drawing on our analysis, we revealed three spatial features – physical visibility, strategizing artefacts, discursive designation – that play a role in the dynamic between openness and closure in strategizing. We constructed a conceptual framework that shows how these spatial features, and their different combinations, are associated with pivots between openness and closure. Thus, our findings advance prior open strategy research by providing potential explanations of why openness turns to closure, despite the attempts to keep the strategizing process open. We argue that taking space seriously provides a more nuanced understanding to some of the contingencies and possibilities related to the dynamics of openness and closure in strategizing
Assessing career optimism and adaptability: toward the construct validation of the Career Futures Inventory
The purpose of this study was to provide initial results on the development and validation of the Career Futures Inventory (CFI), a 25-item measure that assesses positive career planning attitudes. This theory-driven scale development project attempts to assess domain-specific career optimism and perceived adaptability including planfulness, decisional skill, and self-awareness. Savickas' (1997) extension of Super and Knasel's (1981) career adaptability construct and Scheier and Carver's (1985) dispositional optimism construct provided theoretical context for scale development. The CFI emphasizes the empirical measurement of dispositional generalized expectancies within the career domain and adaptability related to an individual's unique career goals and present self-concept. In particular, the CFI relates to the goal of achieving an individualized optimal career status, situated between specific trait-like principles or self-efficacy estimates and the global idealized self. Results from an item analysis of scale homogeneity and exploratory factor analysis in a sample of 690 undergraduates from a large midwestern university revealed three subscales: (1) Career Adaptability; (2) Career Optimism; and (3) Perceived Knowledge. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the three-factor model provided an excellent fit to the data. Additional analyses established high internal consistency, temporal stability, and construct validity through examination of correlates with dispositional optimism, Big Five personality characteristics, generalized problem-solving, vocationally-relevant self-efficacy, interests, and numerous career-relevant attitudes and outcomes. Results demonstrated that optimistic and adaptable people appear to strive higher academically, report greater comfort with their educational and career-related plans, show higher levels of career identity, and engage in career exploration activities more thoroughly. These results support the concurrent validity of the CFI scales. Moreover, a series of hierarchical regression analyses demonstrated the incremental validity of career optimism after controlling for dispositional optimism, self-efficacy, positive and negative affect, and the Big Five as they related to career exploration attitudes. Implications for future research and counseling practice are discussed. The assessment of optimism and adaptability shows promise for strengthening the identification, modification, and achievement of appropriate career related goals.</p
Geo Informatio
Women’s career decision-making after brain injury
The career development and counselling literature has not included disability within the framework of diversity (Whiston & Breichesen, 2002) and has especially ignored women with disabilities (Flores et al., 2003). Consequently, the career development of women with disabilities is at an early phase of inquiry (Noonan et al., 2004) with no extant studies on the career development of women with acquired brain injury (ABI). Thus the purpose of this study was to give women with disabilities a greater priority in career research and to elucidate the career decision-making experiences of women with ABI. The social model of disability, which treats disability and normality as socially constructed statuses (Gill,
Kewman, & Brannan, 2003), and positive psychology (Duckworth, Steen, & Seligman, 2005) served as frames for the study. The article makes a unique contribution to the extant research in career psychology and counselling psychology. It advances the understanding of career needs, significant life decisions, emotions, perpectives, and experiences of women with brain injury, a negelected population in the counselling and psychology literatures.Peer reviewedFinal article published
