No full textInternational audienceCes 210 lettres inédites nous mettent face à deux personnages de l'histoire du cinéma, que tout paraît opposer : Abel Gance est un metteur en scène pour qui l'expression "septième art" semble inventée, Charles Pathé est un industriel soucieux de réunir le grand public. Leurs âges (Charles Pathé est de vingt-six ans l'aîné), leurs métiers et façons de faire des films sont a priori différents. C'est pourtant cette opposition, nourrie d'espérance, de partage, de fidélité, parfois de désillusion et de colère, qui fait la singularité et la richesse de leur relation - entretenue durant près de quarante ans.Leurs échanges débutent à la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale, alors que l'hégémonie du cinéma français est fortement ébranlée par l'extension des studios américains. En 1918, Abel Gance, fort du succès de ses premières réalisations, commence à être reconnu par ses pairs. Charles Pathé est quant à lui un industriel renommé, mais sa multinationale, créée en 1896, a essuyé d'importantes pertes de marchés. Tandis que l'un est au début de sa carrière, l'autre cherche le moyen de conserver sa place. Cependant, les vues de l'industriel et du cinéaste ne sont pas si éloignées. Charles Pathé trouve en Gance un auteur qui lui permettra de poursuivre ses réflexions et même de les appliquer. Quant au metteur en scène, chef de file de l'avant-garde française, il n'oppose pas création et cinéma commercial et s'appuie sur celui-ci pour trouver des capitaux.De J'accuse (1919) à La Roue (1923) puis Napoléon (1927), les projets naissent et s'accomplissent avec ferveur. Mais les réalisations pharaoniques de Gance, en pleine crise du cinéma, ne sont pas sans créer de frictions. Les ressentiments éclatent quand l'heure des comptes arrive. Le passage au cinéma sonore, marquant la fin de la démiurgie de Gance ainsi que le retrait des affaires de Charles Pathé, laisse place aux écrits mélancoliques.C'est dans l'expression mouvante de leur sensibilité et de leur pensée du cinéma que cette correspondance, miroir des enjeux de son temps, prend tout son intérêt

No full textA basket of flowers appears and moves by itself to the middle of a decorative arch. From the basket, a woman magician appears. From a cylinder, the magician conjures a series of tiny dancers and acrobats who perform on a table top, and in the palm of her hand. She puts dancers back into the cylinder, then stirs and shakes the contents, and out pops another dancer. She puts them back into the cylinder, then arranges six small cups in a line along the table top. She waves her wand and six tiny dancers appear and dance on a board placed across the tops of the cups. Then, one by one she makes all her props disappear and produces a basket of flowers, which she enlarges and scatters about the stage. The flowers turn into life-sized dancers.
