    On the Collaboration of an Automatic Path-Planner and a Human User for Path-Finding in Virtual Industrial Scenes

    This paper describes a global interactive framework enabling an automatic path-planner and a user to collaborate for finding a path in cluttered virtual environments. First, a collaborative architecture including the user and the planner is described. Then, for real time purpose, a motion planner divided into different steps is presented. First, a preliminary workspace discretization is done without time limitations at the beginning of the simulation. Then, using these pre-computed data, a second algorithm finds a collision free path in real time. Once the path is found, an haptic artificial guidance on the path is provided to the user. The user can then influence the planner by not following the path and automatically order a new path research. The performances are measured on tests based on assembly simulation in CAD scenes

    Towards a path dependence approach to study management innovation

    Purpose – Scholars in social sciences tend to use the term of path dependence without explaining exactly what they mean by it. Path dependence is a useful approach to understand the success or otherwise of the implementation of management innovation. The aim of this paper is to identify under which conditions it makes sense to talk about path dependence, and the relevance of using path dependence to the analysis of management innovation.Design/methodology/approach – The path dependence literature in different contexts and knowledge areas within social science is reviewed using a narrative approach.Findings – The concept of path dependence can be used to study management innovation, particularly when analyzing the introduction of new management practices. The authors argue that the order in which management practices are introduced has a profound effect on the outcomes for the organization. When the appropriate practices are introduced first, these create enhanced capabilities for the implementation of subsequent practices. If inappropriate practices are rolled out, they may severely impede management innovation and thus evolution and change of the firm.Research limitations/implications – This work highlights the need to conduct further research to understand the interaction between existing practices and the new ones. This study can be extended with an empirical work to corroborate the results presented here.Originality/value – By reviewing the different definitions of path dependence that exist in the literature, this paper will stimulate a debate on the necessary and sufficient conditions of path dependence and encourage a greater level of clarity in the management innovation area

    Path Queries on Compressed XML

    Central to any XML query language is a path language such as XPath which operates on the tree structure of the XML document. We demonstrate in this paper that the tree structure can be effectively compressed and manipulated using techniques derived from symbolic model checking. Specifically, we show first that succinct representations of document tree structures based on sharing subtrees are highly effective. Second, we show that compressed structures can be queried directly and efficiently through a process of manipulating selections of nodes and partial decompression. We study both the theoretical and experimental properties of this technique and provide algorithms for querying our compressed instances using node-selecting path query languages such as XPath. We believe the ability to store and manipulate large portions of the structure of very large XML documents in main memory is crucial to the development of efficient, scalable native XML databases and query engines

    On crack path stability in a layered material

    Crack paths in an elastic layer on top of a substrate are considered. Crack growth is initiated from an edge crack in the layer. The plane of the initially straight crack forms an angle to the free surface. The load consists of a pair of forces applied at the crack mouth and parallel to the interface. Crack paths are calculated using a boundary element method. Crack growth is assumed to proceed along a path for which the mode II stress intensity factor vanishes. The inclination and the length of the initial crack are varied. The effect of two different substrates on the crack path evolution is demonstrated. A crack path initially leading perpendicularly to the interface is shown to be directionally unstable for a rigid substrate. Irrespective of its initial angle, the crack does not reach the interface, but reaches the free surface if the layer is infinitely long. At finite layer length the crack reaches the upper free surface if the initial crack inclination to the surface is small enough. For an inextendable flexible substrate, on the other hand, the crack reaches the interface if its initial inclination is large enough. For the flexible substrate an unstable path parallel with the sides of an infinitely long layer is identified. The results are compared with experimental results and discussed in view of characterisation of directionally unstable crack paths. The energy release rate for an inclined edge crack is determined analytically

    Transit functions on graphs (and posets)

    The notion of transit function is introduced to present a unifying approachfor results and ideas on intervals, convexities and betweenness in graphs andposets. Prime examples of such transit functions are the interval function I andthe induced path function J of a connected graph. Another transit function isthe all-paths function. New transit functions are introduced, such as the cutvertextransit function and the longest path function. The main idea of transitfunctions is that of ‘transferring’ problems and ideas of one transit functionto the other. For instance, a result on the interval function I might suggestsimilar problems for the induced path function J. Examples are given of howfruitful this transfer can be.
