    No full text
In this article I discuss some interactional aspects regarding the relation between the participants in the sociolinguistic interview. In particular, I show how interviewers and interviewees work together in order to co-construct the (socio)linguistic data. In this perspective, I analyse the ways in which the participants make observable to each other their interactional roles through the interview. Moreover, I focus on the relation between the individuals taking part in the interview and the invisible, yet influential members of the research group. I show how the latter may affect the interactional moves of the former, but also how participants account for the research group’s role. The analysis confirms that the linguistic data are not pre-existing objects ready to be collected. This means that interviewer and interviewee are not, respectively, a ‘phonic machine’ and a ‘source of information’. Rather, the interview is the discursive space where linguistic data are created. The data presented in this article come from audio recordings of the interviews of the sociolinguistic section of the Linguistic Atlas of Sicily. In particular, I focus on questions regarding the language uses of the speakers, their attitude about Italian and Sicilian and the code choice during the interview

In this paper I discuss the current state of the so called populist political discourse in Italy. In particular my purpose is to shed light on some features of this kind of discourse in order to show the relation between language and policy in the discourse of populism. In this perspective I will follow the eight key points that, according to Diamanti & Lazar (2018), identify the actual populist movements, in order to verify if – and, in that case, which – linguistic traits characterize their discourse. The analysis will be focused on the semantic and argumentative aspects of the discourse of some of the most important political actors in contemporary Italy

Communicative Practices and Online Communities on Social Media in Migration Context

    No full text
The chapter investigates the digital communication practices among a group of young migrants living in Palermo. In particular, the analysis aims to study both how migrant youth who belong to superdiverse networks use communicative resources and the way they handle the networked relations they establish in the host community. The data of the chapter come from the Facebook feeds of two young migrant youths who met each other and the researchers at a school of Italian in Palermo. Central in our work is the recognition of the need to change our views about the composition and trajectories of migrant groups. In this perspective we review literature on digital diasporas, underlining how this literature has built on research about social media communication, particularly work on context collapse and audience design. Finally, we argue that neither the concept of “diaspora” nor the different labels used for this kind of community (“intradiverse”, “light” “of practice” and the like) are able to capture the complexity of networks that young migrants are shown to construct online

Introduzione a "Teoria e pratica del testo. Grammatica, nuovi media, didattica, letteratura"

    No full text
Italian, dialects, and immigrant languages are changing and overlapping within a political and social landscape marked by major transformations and problematic forms of communication. At the same time, stereotypes, longstanding prejudices, and new perspectives crowd the debate on languages, both inside and outside educational institutions. Drawing on a broad dataset—linguistic and demographic, quantitative and qualitative—this volume analyzes the complex relationship between languages and society in 21st-century Italy and its recent past. It employs a range of descriptive and analytical tools, some of which are examined in depth in relation to evolving linguistic models, as the field grapples with new processes and emerging areas of research

    No full text
The present work moves from a wider project on Italian as L2 competence of a group of foreign unaccompanied minors (MSNA) included in the literacy courses of the Scuola di Lingua Italiana per Stranieri dell’Università di Palermo (ItaStra). The article focuses on the analysis of a narrative speech corpus from native/non native face to face conversations. The narratives involve in particular the experience of migration. In this perspective, a special attention will be paid on the interaction turns, the discourse and pragmatic competence, and the use of linguistic constructions typical of story-telling (the use of conjunctions, verb tense conjugation and adverbs)
