P-Doped Porous Carbon as Metal Free Catalysts for Selective Aerobic Oxidation with an Unexpected Mechanism
An extremely simple and rapid (seconds) approach is reported to directly synthesize gram quantities of P-doped graphitic porous carbon materials with controlled P bond configuration. For the first time, it is demonstrated that the P-doped carbon materials can be used as a selective metal free catalyst for aerobic oxidation reactions. The work function of P-doped carbon materials, its connectivity to the P bond configuration, and the correlation with its catalytic efficiency are studied and established. In direct contrast to N-doped graphene, the P-doped carbon materials with higher work function show high activity in catalytic aerobic oxidation. The selectivity trend for the electron donating and withdrawing properties of the functional groups attached to the aromatic ring of benzylic alcohols is also different from other metal free carbon based catalysts. A unique catalytic mechanism is demonstrated, which differs from both GO and N-doped graphene obtained by high temperature nitrification. The unique and unexpected catalytic pathway endows the P-doped materials with not only good catalytic efficiency but also recyclability. This, combined with a rapid, energy saving approach that permits fabrication on a large scale, suggests that the P-doped porous materials are promising materials for “green catalysis” due to their higher theoretical surface area, sustainability, environmental friendliness and low cost.This document is the Accepted Manuscript version of a Published Work that appeared in final form in ACS Nano, copyright © American Chemical Society after peer review and technical editing by the publisher. Es werden Grundkonzepte der Professionalisierung in der Ausbildung von integrativen TherapeutInnen dargelegt und theoretisch begründet, um verständlich zu machen, wie Praxeologie zu einem fundierten“ Habitus“ (Bourdieu) wird, einen „Praxissinn“ (sens pratique) ermöglicht. Anhand der Begründung des Ausbildungselements des „Behandlungsjournals“, einer Prozessdokumentation, werden die dargelegten Positionen exemplifiziert durch eine integrativtherapeutische longitudinale Karrierebegleitung eines Patienten mit emotional instabiler Persönlichkeit vom Borderline-Typus, Protrahierter PTBS und Polytox-Suchtproblematik. Dieses Behandlungsjournal beschreibt die sequentielle Karrierebegleitung eines politoxikomanen Mannes auf den 4 Wegen der Heilung unter Verwendung der Methodik der Integrativen Therapie.Basic concepts of professionalization in training of integrative therapists are presented with their theoretical foundations in order to explain how praxeology is contributing to a well grounded “Habitus” (Bourdieu), which creates a “sense for practice” (sens pratique). Improved prognosis after cardiac resynchronization therapy over a decade
Aims The past decade has seen an increased delivery of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) for patients with heart failure (HF). We explored whether clinical outcomes after CRT have changed from the perspective of an entire public healthcare system. Methods and results A national database covering the population of England (56.3 million in 2019) was used to explore clinical outcomes after CRT from 2010 to 2019. A total of 64 698 consecutive patients (age 71.4 ± 11.7 years; 74.8% male) underwent CRT-defibrillation [n = 32 313 (49.7%)] or CRT-pacing [n = 32 655 (50.3%)] implantation. From 2010–2011 to 2018–2019, there was a 76% increase in CRT implantations. During the same period, the proportion of patients with hypertension (59.6–73.4%), diabetes (26.5–30.8%), and chronic kidney disease (8.62–22.5%) increased, as did the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI ≥ 3 from 20.0% to 25.1%) (all P < 0.001). Total mortality decreased at 30 days (1.43–1.09%) and 1 year (9.51–8.13%) after implantation (both P < 0.001). At 2 years, total mortality [hazard ratio (HR): 0.72; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.69–0.76] and total mortality or HF hospitalization (HR: 0.59; 95% CI 0.57–0.62) decreased from 2010–2011 to 2018–2019, after correction for age, race, sex, device type (CRT-defibrillation or pacing), comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and myocardial infarction), or the CCI (HR: 0.81; 95% CI 0.77–0.85). Conclusions From the perspective of an entire public health system, survival has improved and HF hospitalizations have decreased after CRT implantation over the past decade. This prognostic improvement has occurred despite an increasing comorbidity burden

Investigations of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) siderophore binding proteins
Siderophores are small, high-affinity ferric iron chelators released by many microorganisms and some plants to solubilize iron. They are of great interest due to their clinical use to treat iron overload in humans, and also in relation to the development of novel antibiotics that target the biosynthetic and uptake pathways for iron in pathogens. Pathogens such as Bacillus anthracis excrete more than one type of siderophore. This is linked to increased pathogenicity. The Gram-positive soil bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) excretes three siderophores: desferrioxamine B, desferrioxamine E and coelichelin. These displace iron from insoluble ferric hydroxides, and the resulting ferric complexes are transported into the cell via siderophore-binding proteins (lipoprotein receptors) associated with ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. Previous studies showed that some of the genes in the biosynthetic clusters of the desferrioxamines (des) and coelichelin (cch) were required for efficient uptake of ferrioxamine E and ferri-coelichelin respectively and a third ABC transporter gene cluster (cdt), not associated with siderophore biosynthesis genes, was implicated in the import of ferrioxamine B. In this study, the lipoprotein receptors encoded within the des, cch and cdt clusters - DesE, CchF and CdtB – were recombinantly overproduced in E. coli and purified by immobilized metal affinity chromatography. Also, ferri-coelichelin was purified from cultures of S. coelicolor. The binding of the ferric complexes of the three cognate siderophores, as well as the xenosiderophores ferrichrome and ferrialbomycin, to the lipoprotein receptors was monitored by intrinsic fluorescence quenching. Dissociation constants of receptor-siderophore complexes were found to be in the nanomolar range, and a revised model of cognate siderophore transport in S. coelicolor was proposed. In collaboration with researchers at St. Andrews University, an X-ray crystal structure was solved for apo-DesE and DesE bound to ferrioxamine B, which demonstrated the similarity of DesE to other bacterial siderophore-binding proteins and the negligible conformational change on substrate binding. Ferrioxamine B also exhibited an unusual configuration not observed before in X-ray crystals of this ferri-siderophore. Also, a forcefield was constructed to model the structure and distortions ferric-tris-hydroxamate complexes, which could be used in the future to investigate the molecular basis of the tight and specific binding of ferri-siderophores to siderophore-binding proteins
Evaluation of the Tauc Method for Optical Absorption Edge Determination: ZnO Thin Films as a Model System
One of the most frequently used methods for characterizing thin films is UV-Vis absorption. The near-edge region can be fitted to a simple expression in which the intercept gives the band-gap and the fitting exponent identifies the electronic transition as direct or indirect. (See Tauc et al., Physica Status Solidi, 1966; these are often called “Tauc” plots.) While the technique is powerful and simple, the accuracy of the fitted band-gap result is seldom stated or known. We tackle this question by refitting a large number of Tauc plots from the literature and look for trends. Nominally pure zinc oxide (ZnO) was chosen as a material with limited intrinsic deviation from stoichiometry and which has been widely studied. Our examination of the band gap values and their distribution leads to a discussion of some experimental factors that can bias the data and lead to either smaller or larger apparent values than would be expected. Finally, an easily evaluated figure-of-merit is defined that may help guide more accurate Tauc fitting. For samples with relatively sharper Tauc plot shapes, the population yields Eg (ZnO) as 3.276 +/- 0.033 eV, in good agreement with data for single crystalline material.This is the accepted version of the following article: Viezbicke, B.
