HIERARCHICAL MULTI-VLAD FOR IMAGE RETRIEVAL
Constructing discriminative feature descriptors is crucial towards effective image retrieval. The state-of-the-art powerful global descriptor for this purpose is Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors (VLAD). Given a set of local features (say, SIFT) extracted from an image, the VLAD is generated by quantizing local features with a small visual vocabulary (64 to 512 centroids), aggregating the residual statistics of quantized features for each centroid and concatenating the aggregated residual vectors from each centroid. One can increase the search accuracy by increasing the size of vocabulary (from hundreds to hundreds of thousands), which, however, it leads to heavy computation cost with flat quantization. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical multi-VLAD to seek the tradeoff between descriptor discriminability and computation complexity. We build up a tree-structured hierarchical quantization (TSHQ) to accelerate the VLAD computation with a large vocabulary. As quantization error may propagate from root to leaf node (centroid) with TSHQ, we introduce multi-VLAD, which constructing a VLAD descriptor for each level of the vocabulary tree, so as to compensate for the quantization error at that level. Extensive evaluation over benchmark datasets has shown that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art in terms of retrieval accuracy, fast extraction, as well as light memory cost.EICPCI-S(ISTP)[email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]

Recently, a new scientific book, "Education and Identity", was published, signed by the professor-researcher, Vlad Pâslaru, a reference name in the field of pedagogical research carried out in the Republic of Moldova, who, in his constant concern to substantiate scientifically, every aspect of education comes, this time, to lay the foundations of an education for identity, a problem not yet elucidated, but without which we cannot dialogue with Europeanness and universality.
In his new work, Vlad Pâslaru examines with his characteristic and in-depth meticulousness two key concepts of contemporary pedagogical science, highlighted even in the title of the book - education and identity, the first being part of the category of fundamental concepts, referring to the objective dimension of education. , the second referring to the subjective dimension of education, ie its purposes, for which the author advances an idea with axiom value: "the main purpose of education is the identity of the educated, obtained through education"
Finding Vlad: A Historical Fiction Novella
This Independent Study is a historical fiction novella, written to be the travel journal of Bram Stoker (the author of Dracula) as he travels in Romania to research a sequel examining the historical figure he based the Count on, Vlad the Impaler. It takes place in the summer of 1900, shortly before a period of political turmoil in Romania. During his travels, Bram meets Gheorghe Cantacuzino, the current prime minister of Romania, who will lose power only a few weeks after this novella. He will also spend most of his time with Mr. Wallach, the owner of the hotel he is staying at in Bucharest and the only English speaker he encounters. In the process of his research, Bram learns very quickly that Vlad, the man, the myth, and the monster is not as simple as he originally thought

Catalytic Processes Mediated by Metal−Organic Frameworks : Reactivity and Mechanistic Studies
The present thesis describes the development of heterogeneous catalytic methodologies using metal−organic frameworks (MOFs) as porous matrices for supporting transition metal catalysts. A wide spectrum of chemical reactions is covered. Following the introductory section (Chapter 1), the results are divided between one descriptive part (Chapter 2) and four experimental parts (Chapters 3–6). Chapter 2 provides a detailed account of MOFs and their role in heterogeneous catalysis. Specific synthesis methods and characterization techniques that may be unfamiliar to organic chemists are illustrated based on examples from this work. Pd-catalyzed heterogeneous C−C coupling and C−H functionalization reactions are studied in Chapter 3, with focus on their practical utility. A vast functional group tolerance is reported, allowing access to substrates of relevance for the pharmaceutical industry. Issues concerning the recyclability of MOF-supported catalysts, leaching and operation under continuous flow are discussed in detail. The following chapter explores puzzling questions regarding the nature of the catalytically active species and the pathways of deactivation for Pd@MOF catalysts. These questions are addressed through detailed mechanistic investigations which include in situ XRD and XAS data acquisition. For this purpose a custom reaction cell is also described in Chapter 4. The scope of Pd@MOF-catalyzed reactions is expanded in Chapter 5. A strategy for boosting the thermal and chemical robustness of MOF crystals is presented. Pd@MOF catalysts are coated with a protecting SiO2 layer, which improves their mechanical properties without impeding diffusion. The resulting nanocomposite is better suited to withstand the harsh conditions of aerobic oxidation reactions. In this chapter, the influence of the nanoparticles’ geometry over the catalyst’s selectivity is also investigated. While Chapters 3–5 dealt with Pd-catalyzed processes, Chapter 6 introduces hybrid materials based on first-row transition metals. Their reactivity is explored towards light-driven water splitting. The heterogenization process leads to stabilized active sites, facilitating the spectroscopic probing of intermediates in the catalytic cycle.At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 5: Submitted. Intertextualität und Polyphonie in Dieter Schlesaks „VLAD. Die Dracula-Korrektur“
Dieter Schlesak’s novel VLAD. Die DraculaKorrektur tries to deconstruct in an original manner the myth of Dracula by proposing a new approach of the subject: instead of the homonymous literary motif, the author deals with the literary figure Vlad Ţepeş. The originality of this approach lies in the fact that Schlesak does not present the reader with a classical heroic figure, instead he deliberately prefers fiction to the attributes of the classic historic novel. Thus he operates not only with a polyphonic text, but also with intertextualism, creating a novel of impressing complexity. This way of dealing with the subject is sustained by the main character, conceived as a decadent Renaissance prince and a prisoner between two antagonic universes, as well as by the whole constellation of real and fictional characters that define his contradictory personality. Dieter Schlesak has accepted the risk of being criticised by his countrymen as well as by historians, deliberately trying to change the Western readers’ perception of this legendary Romanian figure. By creating a literary character that rejects the Western stereotypes and the Romanian prejudices, he manages to prove the potential of the literary figure of Dracula
