Exploring the statistical applicability of the Poincaré inequality: a test of normality

    No full text
A new test of normality based on Poincaré inequality is proposed and analyzed. It rests on the characterization of the normal distribution given by Borovkov and Utev, i. e., a r. v. is normal if and only if its Poincaré constant is equal to its variance. The test statistic is computed by estimating the Poincaré constant via orthonormal polynomials. In case of known expectation and variance, the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic is derived under the null hypothesis, and the consistency of the test is proved. An analysis of effects of the degree of polynomials on the procedure is sketched. A Monte Carlo method is used to approximate the distribution when population expectation and variance are replaced by their empirical counterparts. In this framework, we study the level and power of the test for finite samples by means of a simulation experiment including a comparison with other tests

Electricity consumption prediction with functional linear regression using spline estimators

    No full text
A functional linear regression model linking observations of a functional response variable with measurements of an explanatory functional variable is considered. This model serves to analyse a real data set describing electricity consumption in Sardinia. The interest lies in predicting either oncoming weekends' or oncoming weekdays' consumption, provided actual weekdays' consumption is known. A B-spline estimator of the functional parameter is used. Selected computational issues are addressed as well.functional linear regression, functional response, ARH(1), penalized least squares, B-spline, electricity consumption in Sardinia,

Read counts at multiple attenuation levels as an object localization technique using passive RFID tags

    No full text
Radio Frequency Technologies (RFID) are experiencing rapid development and business, retail, manufacturing and healthcare are the major application areas benefiting from it. We describe and analyze an algorithm which helps in tracking of medical equipment and personnel and patients in a Trauma Bay. We adapt the Read Count algorithm to be used at multiple attenuation levels as a localization technique. The input parameter to the algorithm is the read count value which gives a measure of number of times the back-scattered radio frequencies from passive tags has been received by the antenna. Special attention has to be given to the placement of antennas to get the optimum result. The detection of multiple tags and human occlusion are two major concerns which we have tried to solve by suing multiple horizontal antennas along with 1 vertical antenna. We have discussed the results and analysis of such a configuration and accordingly given a conclusion. The problems associated with the configuration have also been discussed which can form part of future work.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Ankit Sard

This study was carried out to determine some biological characteristics of Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda Bloch, 1793) from the Gallipoli Peninsula and Dardanelles (northeastern Mediterranean, Turkey) between September 2006 and October 2009. The length weight relationship was estimated as W = 0.0020TL(3.41)(r(2) = 0.96) for females, W = 0.0029TL(3.32) (r(2) = 0.97) for males, and W = 0.0028TL(3.32) (r(2) = 0.97) for all samples. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were computed as L-infinity 68.5 cm, k = 0.78 year(-1), t(0) = -0.34 years for females; L-infinity = 72.2 cm, k = 0.69 year(-1), t(0) = -0.52 years for males; and L-infinity = 69.8 cm, k = 0.76 year(-1), t(0) = 0.44 years for all samples. The length at first maturity was estimated to be 41.9 cm for females and 35.8 cm for males.TUBITAK [1060097]The present study was carried out with the financial support of TUBITAK (Project No: 1060097).

The main aim of this work is to highlight the specificity of the Sardinian language emerging from the Latin heritage of its lexis. In pursuit of the aim just stated, this paper presents the results of an exhaustive research by means of dictionary articles which are headed by an etymon and contain information relating to its continuity, its earliest documentation, as well as other phonetic, morphological or syntactical considerations which may be of interest when retracing the evolution from Latin to Sardinian. All of this has been done bearing constantly in mind the renowned authors of Romance Philology, especially Wagner and his works, which have been crucial for tracing a clearly-defined profile of Sardinian and its dialectal complexity concerning phonetics, morphology and, especially, lexis. In 'La lingua sarda: storia, spirito e forma' (p. 65 in the 1951 ed.), the author somehow justifies why he focuses on the study of lexis by simply stating that ‘lexis reveals the history of a language better than phonetics, morphology or syntax.’ His aim, indeed, lies in shedding light on the history of Sardinian language, which seems to systematically refuse the taxonomy to which other Romance languages gently submit. Without the shadow of a doubt, we share with Wagner the belief that lexis represents the most relevant trace of the history of a language, the one which provides more information about it; that is why we have set ourselves the goal of focusing on it, without ignoring, though, the characteristics of other fields (especially phonetics and morphology) which arise in our study and may be as helpful for pleading for what we call Sardinian ‘specificity’ within the Romance scene

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Safety Policies on Construction Sites in India

    No full text
This thesis explores Indian construction industry safety measures and their benefit to cost ratios. In India, the construction sector is the second largest employer after agriculture. Around 50 million workers work in the construction sector to earn easy money at the end of the day. About 48,000 workers die in India due to occupational accidents every year, and around 38 construction accidents occur every day in India. This thesis analyses the social impacts of safety policies and their employers' financial implications. No such studies have been done previously for the Indian construction market. There have been studies regarding estimating the number of accidents in India, respective safety measures, etc. Implementation of safety policies can reduce the number of casualties up to 20%-30%. The performance of safety policies will benefit the workers, their families, friends, relatives, and society. It is common for Indian construction companies not to invest in construction health & safety measures because it is cheaper for them to pay the costs of compensation for accidents than modernizing their facilities to make them safer. It seems essential to understand the need to invest in safety measures from a societal perspective. Thus, this research is a study about the impacts of safety policies with cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and how the CBA results can be utilized in the decision making for the policymakers, employers, and other stakeholders in the industry. First, a literature review was conducted to better understand the Indian construction industry's problems and probable solutions. Literature was also undertaken to understand the concepts regarding the cost-benefit analysis. Additionally, interviews were conducted to get the required data to perform the cost-benefit analysis and partly answer the research questions. For the research, eight interviews were conducted with people who closely work in the Indian construction industry. Based on the interviews, five significant safety policies were identified to be implemented at the construction sites in India to reduce accidents. These five safety policies were considered as a package to perform a societal cost-benefit analysis. The societal cost-benefit analysis was performed to find the impacts of safety measures only from the societal perspective. Next to this, a business financial impact analysis for the safety measures was conducted to see their effects only from the employer's perspective. In general, the interviewees believed that the number of accidents occurs in Indian construction sites due to the lack of safety measures provided by the companies and the illiteracy of most workers and their unorganized way of working. They also suggested that these accidents can be reduced by implementing safety policies, as shown in the table below. Most of them estimated that taking these safety measures could reduce the number of accidents by almost one-fourth.Management of Technology (MoT
