Combating Chronic Absenteeism through Parent Engagement
This action research project examines the impact of targeted parent and teacher collaboration on chronic absenteeism at a charter school. In efforts to increase family engagement and to improve student participation and learning, the project includes professional development designed to equip teachers and families with best-evidence practical, relationship-based strategies to build positive school-home connection. As part of action research, the project planned and implemented a series of research-based intentional interventions such as student self-check-in system, family engagement events, and teacher training. For impact assessment of the interventions on student performance and family engagement, mixed-methods design was used including interviews, surveys, observations, and records-analysis for data collection and analysis. Through the intentional, targeted interventions, teachers and families worked together to create a more supportive and accountable learning environment. The findings highlight the transformative potential of what happens when a community works together and affirm the importance of ongoing school-home collaboration to sustain meaningful positive change in student participation and learning
How dengue vector Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) survive during the dry season in Dhaka City, Bangladesh?
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: In 2000, a dengue outbreak occurred in Bangladesh that included Dhaka City. Both dengue vectors, Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus are present in Bangladesh. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes mainly breed in and around houses and Ae. albopictus is an outside breeder. There are many old trees throughout Dhaka City in different parks, streets and the university campus which may have holes that can contribute as potential breeding habitat for the dengue vector. Therefore, a survey was conducted to investigate the presence of eggs of the dengue vector mosquitoes in treeholes during the dry season in February 2001 to know their contribution on dengue outbreaks.METHODS: All treeholes in 10 different localities (parks, streets and university campus) of Dhaka City were surveyed. All trees were examined for treeholes up to the height of approximately 3 m and sampled. Debris were collected and packed in poly bags and brought to the laboratory for detailed studies. These were then soaked with tap water to observe egg hatching. The soaked materials were kept up to 20 days covered by a fine mosquito net. After 2-3 days, the eggs started hatching and larvae were separated from the sample for rearing up to IV instar.RESULTS: A total of 245 treeholes were surveyed in 49 identified tree species and 18 unidentified trees. Altogether, 1365 Aedes larvae were found, of which 1096 were Aedes albopictus and 269 were other Aedes species. The largest number of larvae was observed in Delonix regia of Leguminosae family. The number of Aedes albopictus found in the treeholes have perfect positive correlation with the number of other Aedes species. Not a single egg of Aedes aegypti was found in this survey.INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: This information will inform public health workers as well as the national control programme to help to solve mosquito borne diseases specially that of dengue. This is critical in planning for vector control operations due to the diversity of dengue outbreak in the nature
Casey-Wilkins Adaptable Array: Broadband Seismic Data
Progress Code: onGoingStatement: The data are generally of high quality, with many stations running overwinter. A small number of stations are impacted by recorder failure or adverse site conditions (e.g. solar panels becoming obscured by snow, or the site being impacted by melt).Purpose
Diverse passive seismic studies including, but not limited to: the background seismic wavefield of the Southern Ocean across annual cycles, the ice-bedrock interface zone in the Casey-Wilkins area, cryoseismic signals of Wilkes Land, teleseismic studies informing the upper mantle structure of East Antarctica, teleseismic studies informing deep Earth structure.
Seismic studies in Antarctica inform the structure and character of the plate tectonic foundations of the continent, including the likelihood of geothermal anomalies and relict fault zones impacting sub-ice fluid and energy flows. Given the low number of seismic stations in Antarctica, recordings at these sites enable studies of the crust and deeper Earth, in tandem with Global Seismic Network records. Such data also informs the structure and character of the ice-bedrock interface zone, including the presence of sediments, whether frozen or otherwise, and the saturation of those sediments. Seismic arrays afford the ability to make accurate appraisals of the distance and direction of diverse aspects of the global seismic wavefield, informing interdisciplinary studies of the Southern Ocean wave climate, for example.
The data are in miniseed format, which is a global standard (not proprietary). Data format information: https://ds.iris.edu/ds/nodes/dmc/data/formats/
The datafiles are time-series, and an example software to read the files would be,
https://docs.obspy.org/packages/obspy.io.mseed.htmlBroadband passive seismic data from stations deployed in array configuration in two seasons. Stations comprise Nanometrics Compact (120 s) sensors (posthole format) with Nanometric Pegasus recorders sampling at 100 Hz. Season 1: early 2022 and overwinter 2022 (11 stations, irregular 2 arm array, aperture approx. 30 km). Season 2: late 2022 and overwinter 2023 (17 stations, irregular 3 arm array, aperture approx. 40 km). Season 2 includes also short duration (approx. 3 weeks) small arrays (5 stations, T shaped array, aperture approx. 3 km).

The data may be accessed using seismology-specific tools via the following alternative data archive:
Tobias Stål, Anya M. Echoes of the pandemic: Contrasting COVID-19 outbreaks in northern Peru
Peru reported the second-highest COVID-19 cases in Latin America, after Brazil. The first COVID-19 wave occurred between March– December 2020, and the second occurred between January–September 2021. The differences between these waves remain largely unknown, and there is no comparison between them in Peru. We evaluated the variation in the clinical and epidemiological components of COVID-19-affected patients in both waves in northern Peru by a retrospective study using the clinical follow-up database of Lambayeque and the epidemiological notification form database of NotiWeb. The COVID-19-associated factors during the two waves were determined using simple and multiple regression analysis, and the prevalence ratio (PR) was estimated. During the second wave of COVID-19, there was an increase in cough symptoms in 12.1%, odynophagia in 5.0%, and chills in 16.0% compared with the first wave. The second wave was marked by a higher proportion of affected adolescents and children and a greater percentage of respiratory symptoms than the first wave. © Failoc-Rojas VE et al. OPERATION BEAUTIFICATION
One Person Can Make A Difference
Susan Zobell, relatively new in Magrath has
shown that quiet community service can really
pay off. Spurred on by the great new look of
our recently completed sidewalks, she felt lots
of businesses could use some paint to add to
our new look. Deciding that a couple of coats
of paint on the old bottle depot, formerly the
Park Theatre, could spruce up Main Street she
quietly got permission and set about to do it. A
Store News invitation for volunteers brought in
several citizens (all mostly newcomers as well).
She was ably aided by her husband, two sons
and her mother from Cardston. Basic work
started out Saturday morning and was
completed in record time with lots of fun in the
bargain. Check out the results as you drive by.
Susan works in the mornings, but will paint the
trim herself, redo the original sign and add
some window Theatre Posters. It’s not all paid
for yet, but hopefully others will decide that a
small donation will be a big investment
community improvement.
Those involved agreed that they would be
willing to paint trim or store fronts for any
businesses on Main Street that wished to
contribute the paint. What a great offer.
Wouldn’t it be great to see that happen?
Thanks, Susan.

Magrath Tadpole Stingers
Fri. Nov. 24, was once again a day to
remember in the annals of the Magrath
Tadpoles. A worthy Raymond opponent once
again succumbed to a relentless barrage of
offensive power & stingy defence. Again the
cunning and dare we say strategic coaching
ingenuity was ever present. Shutouts were
recorded by Jonathan (Gump) Holt & David
(Jacques) Harker. A noticeable improvement
in skating & playmaking was portrayed by
Tyson Hudson & Christian Johnson. Goals
scored were by Cole Barnertt-Hat trick,
Connor Barnett-Hat trick, Casey Hillmer-2,
Jeff Ripley-l, Cole Schneyder-2. Assists by
Cole Barnett-1. Final score Magrath-11
Raymond-0.
Sat. Nov. 25 was a day of infamy for the
Magrath Tadpoles as they lost their 1st game.
A most formidable Milk River team unleashed
a high powered offense that was kept in check
by great defence & goal tending by
Jeff(Sawchuk)Ripley, Casey(Cheevers)Hillmer
& Cole(Dryden)Schneyder. Our boys on
offense were by no means asleep as they
relentlessly peppered Milk Rivers net
minder(an obvious Maple Leaf farm team
plant) but managed only 4 goals. Goals scored
were Cole Barnett-Hat trick, Cole Schneyder-1.
Assists were by Jonathan Holt-1. Final score
Milk River-11, Magrath-4.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH NOVEMBER 1995
THANK YOU to the Lions Club in our
town for their part in bringing Lions Quest
to our school.
On Nov. 20, 21 & 23, I was fortunate
enough to attend the workshop held in
Cardston for the teachers. I went as a parent
to find out about it. I feel the program is
excellent and glad we have it here in Magrath.
Anyone who wants to know more about it
feel free to call me or the school - it's very
exciting. Thanks Again "LIONS" for Lions
