    The VST Auxiliary Units: A status report before their commissioning in Paranal

    The VST telescope is going to be commissioned in Paranal, together with its main sub-systems, such as the Image Analysis and Auto-Guiding system. A preliminary work of fine tuning of each sub-system has been performed in Italy before their shipping to Paranal, where they are waiting for the telescope AIV to be completed in a way to start the final commissioning of the overall system. Each unit has been extensively characterized and tested, with particular care to the Active Optics Shack-Hartmann sensor and to the Auto-Guiding arm. We describe here the phases concerning the integration and test of all the VST Auxiliary Units performed in Italy before their shipping to Paranal. 2010 SPIE

    Turbulence characterisation for Astronomical Observatories

    Atmospheric turbulence has two effects in astronomy; (i) the broadening of the point spread function due to phase fluctuations limiting the resolution of imaging and (ii) producing intensity fluctuations known as scintillation. Adaptive Optics (AO) can be installed on telescopes to correct for the effect of phase, and with the push to large telescopes more complex AO systems such as Multi Conjugate AO (MCAO) and Multi Object AO (MOAO) are desired. Operation of these systems requires a detailed profile of the turbulent atmosphere in real time. In this thesis we consider two turbulence profilers, SLOpe Detection And Ranging (SLODAR) and SCIntillation Detection and Ranging (SCIDAR), two cross beam profilers that retrieve data using covariance of phase variations (SLODAR) and intensity variations (SCIDAR). We present a modification of SLODAR to allow an estimate for non resolved turbulence to be made by considering scintillation in the subapertures of a Shack Hartmann wavefront sensor. A new SCIDAR (Stereo--SCIDAR) is described, allowing dynamic re--conjugation to improve altitude resolution. Practical considerations for the implementation of a SLODAR instrument are considered, including a discussion of potential false measurements of non Kolmogorov power spectra in the ground and surface layers of turbulence. Data is presented from SLODAR observing campaigns on La Palma, and at Paranal. Evidence is presented for orographic effects on measured turbulence, including those due to man made structures

    A comparison of next-generation turbulence profiling instruments at Paranal

    A six-night optical turbulence monitoring campaign has been carried at Cerro Paranal observatory in February and March, 2023 to facilitate the development and characterisation of two novel atmospheric site monitoring instruments - the ring-image next generation scintillation sensor (RINGSS) and 24-hour Shack Hartmann image motion monitor (24hSHIMM) in the context of providing optical turbulence monitoring support for upcoming 20-40m telescopes. Alongside these two instruments, the well-characterised Stereo-SCIDAR and 2016-MASS-DIMM were operated throughout the campaign to provide data for comparison. All instruments obtain estimates of optical turbulence profiles through statistical analysis of intensity and wavefront angle-of-arrival fluctuations from observations of stars. Contemporaneous measurements of the integrated turbulence parameters are compared and the ratios, bias, unbiased root mean square error and correlation of results from each instrument assessed. Strong agreement was observed in measurements of seeing, free atmosphere seeing and coherence time. Less correlation is seen for isoplanatic angle, although the median values agree well. Median turbulence parameters are further compared against long-term monitoring data from Paranal instruments. Profiles from the three small-telescope instruments are compared with the 100-layer profile from the stereo-SCIDAR. It is found that the RINGSS and SHIMM offer improved accuracy in characterisation of the vertical optical turbulence profile over the MASS-DIMM. Finally, the first results of continuous optical turbulence monitoring at Paranal are presented which show a strong diurnal variation and predictable trend in the seeing. A value of 2.65″ is found for the median daytime seeing

    Thermal expansion anomalies of R(Fe, M)(12) (R=Y, Nd; M=Mo and Si)

    Structural and thermal-expansion anomaly studies on R(Fe,M)(12) (R=Nd and and Y, M=Mo and Si) compounds were performed by x-ray diffraction. Mo atoms occupy the 8i site. While Si atoms occupy the 8f and 8j sites but not the 8i site. Thermal-expansion anomaly shows only in ab plane in the Mo compounds, while becomes very weak and along with only the c axis in the Si compounds. The anomaly was attributed to the contribution of the interactions of short Fe-Fe distances similar to the previous explanation on other R-Fe intermetallics and that of other strongly positive interactions such as 8j-8j.     Ground-based photometry of bright stars is expected to be limited by atmospheric scintillation, although in practice observations are often limited by other sources of systematic noise. We analyse 122 nights of bright star (Gmag<11.5) photometry using the 20-cm telescopes of the Next-Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. We compare the noise properties to theoretical noise models and we demonstrate that NGTS photometry of bright stars is indeed limited by atmospheric scintillation. We determine a median scintillation coefficient at the Paranal Observatory of CY=1.54, which is in good agreement with previous results derived from turbulence profiling measurements at the observatory. We find that separate NGTS telescopes make consistent measurements of scintillation when simultaneously monitoring the same field. Using contemporaneous meteorological data, we find that higher wind speeds at the tropopause correlate with a decrease in long-exposure (t=10 s) scintillation. Hence the winter months between June and August provide the best conditions for high precision photometry of bright stars at the Paranal Observatory. This work demonstrates that NGTS photometric data, collected for searching for exoplanets, contains within it a record of the scintillation conditions at Paranal

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

    "Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"

    Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
