Mentors in schools: the impact of the let's teach for Hungary mentoring program on the prospects and academic aspirations of underprivileged students
No full textJelen tanulmány a Tanítsunk Magyarországért mentorprogram mentoráltainak
továbbtanulási törekvéseit és a mentorálás hatását kívánja feltárni saját
szerkesztésű kérdőív fejezetek segítségével egy Hajdú-Bihar megyében végzett
kontrollcsoportos empirikus felmérés adatainak bemutatásával. A program
célja a hátrányos helyzetű réteg felzárkóztatása és a sikeres végzettségszerzés
támogatása. A programot vizsgáló kutatások legnagyobb számban a mentorok
benyomásaira kérdeznek rá, ezzel szemben jelen kutatás a hátrányos helyzetű,
7–8. osztályos, pályaválasztás előtt álló tanulókat célozta. Mostanáig nem
készült hasonló méretű és részletességű adatbázis, ami a program hatását a
diákok bevonásával vizsgálta volna. Arra kerestem a választ, hogy a mentor a
szülő és pedagógus mellett képes-e eredményesen támogatni a diákok sikeres
pályaorientációját. Az eredmények igazolták, hogy a program sikeresen vonja
be a hátrányos helyzetű diákokat, azonban a továbbtanulási döntés legerősebb
prediktora még a mentorprogramban való részvétel mellett is a család anyagi
helyzete. Elmondható azonban, hogy a mentorok jelentős szerepet játszanak a
diákok pályaválasztásának tanácsokkal való segítésében.Abstract. The present study aims to explore the academic aspirations of students
participating in the "Tanítsunk Magyarországért" (Let’s Teach for Hungary!)
mentoring program and the impact that working with a mentor has on different
student outcomes. The Let’s Teach for Hungary program aims to help
disadvantaged groups with improving their academic progress and to support
them during the process of choosing a career and applying to secondary
education. Most research on mentoring programs asks about the impressions of
mentors, whereas this research focused on disadvantaged students in 7th and
8
th grades who are about to choose a career. To date, no database of similar
size and detail has been produced to investigate the impacts of the program on
the students. In this research, we wanted to find out whether the mentor,
alongside the parent and teacher, could effectively support the successful career
guidance of the students. The results demonstrated that the program is
successful in engaging disadvantaged students but that the strongest predictor
of the decision to continue education, even when participating in the mentoring
program, is the financial situation of the family
