    Illuminating Sensory Archaeologies

    No full text
Light has a fundamental role to play in our perception of the world. It meditates the relationship between people and things within space, and is crucial to our understanding of the material culture of past societies. This chapter introduces light as the core focus of the volume; its qualities and affordances in different contexts and (im)material environments; its design and manipulation; and its elusive properties. The introduction also outlines how the contributions are structured. Chapters serve as case studies to show how diverse spatial and temporal contexts can advance archaeologies of light and with light. The volume is divided into seven thematic parts, each of which explores how light enables or hinders interactions, materializes and is being materialized, animates and illuminates, accentuates and shadows, generates symbols, meanings, and systems, creates beliefs and phenomena, transforms rituals and traditions, structures spaces, and shapes atmospheres. The volume then closes with an Afterword by Tim Ingold, who comments on the chapters and reflects on the role of light and dark as a constitutive element of the things we see around us

At the computer's edge. The value of virtual constructions to the interpretation of cultural heritage

The title of this paper is an adaptation of Ian Hodder’s notion that interpretation starts ‘at the trowel’s edge’ (1997), as excavations should be active, reflexive and multivocal practices, during which interpretation takes place as an inextricable part of our research. The process of interpretation is a complicated issue. It has engrossed most practitioners, and is closely related to the conceptualisation of the past as reflecting contemporary social and cultural experiences through the scrutiny of cultural heritage remains. Archaeological remains are under appreciated, as they can be accessed only by specialised audiences, and any finds are presented by means of conventional illustrations and comprehensive list of artefacts. Even the most common recording method in archaeology, i.e. fieldnotes, and the subsequent site reports, have been criticised (Hodder 1989) for their distance and impersonality, as well as their attempt to demonstrate objectivity by establishing rigorous classifications and complex terminologies. For that reason, different forms of media have been used in the interpretive processes, not only in scientific research, but also for providing varied levels of engagement with the archaeological datasets by the public

Sizing effect on reclaimed continuous carbon fibres's properties extracted from recycled automotive composite parts

The growing need for recycling carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRPs) is driven by increasing environmental sustainability concerns. CFRPs, valued for their strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, are extensively used across various industries, leading to significant waste accumulation and environmental impact. Maintaining the mechanical performance of carbon fibres, the primary reinforcement in CFRPs, is crucial for the structural integrity and functionality of recycled materials. Chemical and mechanical recycling methods offer promising approaches for fibre reclamation, each with its benefits and drawbacks. As recycling efforts progress, robust characterization methods are essential to assess the integrity and quality of recycled fibres accurately. A novel optical method presented in this study offers a framework for evaluating fibre filament loss during recycling, providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of recycling initiatives. Tensile tests further demonstrate that while recycled fibres exhibit decreased properties compared to reference fibres, sizing significantly enhances the tensile strength of recycled fibres, underscoring the importance of appropriate treatment methods in improving the performance of recycled materials for composite applications

    The Beautiful Face of Ra

In the famous projects of ancient Egyptian architecture, sunlight had always a special role. An expert use of light and shadows helped in creating halls filled with sacredness in many temples; but most of all the Sun was the visible face of Ra, the Sun God. As a consequence, religious and funerary architectural projects were connected with the sun rays on special days of the year through astronomical alignments. The chapter focuses on a few key examples—the Akhet hierophanies at Giza and Amarna, and the winter solstice alignment at Karnak—showing the potentialities of modern archaeoastronomy in understanding key aspects of ancient Egyptian monuments and religion

‘Tangible Pasts’: user-centred design of a mixed reality application for cultural heritage

    No full text
Tangible Pasts is a Mixed Reality (MR) prototype that combines a tangible interface with virtual content. The physical object, a book, enables users to manipulate the virtual models in real time by their actions performed in the physical world. This paper presents an overview of designing the prototype, and the evaluation of this application by participants who tested its usability and interpretive value. It also presents some preliminary results of the second round of design and evaluation. The attention is stressed on the importance of performing constant user evaluations in parallel to the design of the prototype in order to produce an application that is usable and of benefit to archaeological research and interpretation of cultural heritage knowledge

N3LON^3LO calculations for 222 \to 2 processes using Simplified Differential Equations

We present the computation of the massless three-loop ladder-box family with one external off-shell leg using the Simplified Differential Equations (SDE) approach. We also discuss the methods we used for finding a canonical differential equation for the two tennis-court families with one off-shell leg, and the application of the SDE approach on these two families

    The prose of Costas Montis

Costas Montis’ prose work, despite the fact that it has been considered of utmost importance by all the critics of modern Greek literature, however, due to the prestigious reputation and admiration for his poetic work, it has remained on the sidelines of research until today. This thesis aims to investigate and highlight his prose work with a view to identifying the special characteristics that make up his narrative writing. In this context, his published prose work is studied, and in particular the novella Closed Doors, the novel Afentis Batistas and the other things, the short story collections, while the research sample of the thesis has been extended to some juvenilia or unpublished prose writings as well. More specifically, the theme, the form and the content of the texts, the literary influences and the evolution of his writing are investigated, as well as the distinct "intersections" of prose and poetry. C. Montis’ narrative choices are recorded and categorized based on Gérard Genette's theoretical model. At the same time, from the study of the work in question, the ideological and political positions of the author, his attitudes and opinions on events or persons that played a decisive role either for him or for his homeland, Cyprus, are traced and displayed. Special mention is made of the author's theoretical conceptions, as they emerge through self-referential comments on writing, the art of storytelling, and literature altogether.Το πεζογραφικό έργο του Κώστα Μόντη παρά το γεγονός ότι εκτιμήθηκε ως εξόχως σημαντικό από το σύνολο των κριτικών της σύγχρονης νεοελληνικής λογοτεχνίας, ωστόσο, λόγω της αίγλης και του θαυμασμού που συγκέντρωσε το ποιητικό του έργο, παρέμεινε έως και σήμερα στο περιθώριο των ερευνητικών μελετών.
