    In un simposio sul design delle visualizzazioni per l’apprendimento svoltosi in un recente convegno EARLI (European Association for Learning and Instruction, 2011) è stato ricordato che la ricerca psicopedagogica ha verificato che ― nella maggior parte dei casi ― si impara meglio da testi con figure/visualizzazioni rispetto che da testi privi di figure. Si è affermato tuttavia che le figure vengono spesso trattate come se fossero una unica categoria, indifferenziata. Questa raccolta di saggi ha lo scopo di contraddire, in parte, queste affermazioni, sintetizzando alcune delle ricerche che sono state svolte in Italia per studiare il rapporto testo-figure, promettente, interessante, a volte problematico. Da sempre usiamo immagini e illustrazioni in base all’ipotesi che facilitino l’insegnamento e la divulgazione.La continua evoluzione degli strumenti, dei metodi di indagine, delle conoscenze sui processi cognitivi sottostanti all’elaborazione delle informazioni e sui possibili processi didattici messi in atto crea l’opportunità di proporre nuove definizioni delle ragioni e condizioni che fanno sì che una figura possa aiutare o meno la comprensione e l’apprendimento delle informazioni. La costante vitalità di questo campo di ricerca è testimoniata anche dalla recente pubblicazione di due volumi (Paoletti, 2011; Calvani, 2012) a partire dai quali proponiamo una riflessione su alcuni aspetti problematici dell’uso delle figure

    I examine and discuss in this paper Orilia’s theory of external, non-symmetrical relations, that is based on ontological roles (O-Roles). I explore several attempts to interpret O-Roles from an ontological viewpoint and I reject them because of two problems concerning the status of asymmetrical relations (to be distinguished from non-symmetrical relations simpliciter) and of exemplification as an external, non-symmetrical relation. Finally, following Heil’s and Lowe’s characterization of modes as particular properties that ontologically depend on their “bearers”, I introduce relational modes in order to define a new solution to the problems of the ontological status of both external, non-symmetrical relations and O-Roles. I also deal with five objections raised by Fraser MacBride against relational modes and O-Roles and I elaborate an analysis of the relations of being to the left of and being to the right of

    In order to communicate with an audience during a conference‟s talk or a lecture it is becoming increasingly popular to use a fragmented, simplified and shortened form of writing, through a presentation manager like PowerPoint (or Presenter, or Impress and so on). Such a form of writing concerns texts which generally are not self-sufficient and which will be integrated orally through expansions, comments, explanations, etc. by a presenter. These written texts might have two different forms and designs: one synthetic form for a synchronous face-to-face presentation, and one extended form for an asynchronous, stand-alone presentation (Gold, 2002; Farkas, 2006). Powerpoint (or ppt) became popular because it is considered a useful tool for communication. Audiences - and students in particular- appreciate it (Bartsch & Cobern, 2003; Blokzijl & Naeff, 2004), because it seems to facilitate and enhance comprehension during lecture listening, because it makes the selection of important ideas explicit, because it highlights hierarchies and connections between ideas, showing the outcome of the speaker re-processing of the material (Paoletti et al. 2008). The problem that I want to address is that, as a consequence of the program characteristics and of the well known designing guidelines and best practices suggestions (like the famous no more than 6 words x 6 rows), ppt might be very sketchy, schematic even when it is used asyncronically, without the oral integrations of the speaker, when it is read through some University platform or on a social software like Slideshare. Guidelines and even literature on the topic suggest that the written texts should be shorter –every point like a key-word - less cohesive and coherent than a normal text

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Sufficient conditions for robust stability and performance

    In this paper robust stability and performance conditions for the classical unity-feedback control system and for a more general feedback configuration are proposed. Uncertainty is represented in the linear fractional form, where perturbations are assumed to be norm-bounded, stable and unstructured. Suitable Hinf control problems are derived for satisfying both the proposed sufficient conditions. In addition, it is shown that the first condition puts in a unified framework some conditions existing in the literature and referring to specific kinds of perturbations, such as the additive and the multiplicative ones. Lastly, a property of the family of perturbed systems whose robust stabilization is guaranteed by the first condition is derived

    Some classical robust stability conditions for continuous time linear time-invariant systems are analyzed by comparing the families of perturbed systems whose stabilization through a given compensator is guaranteed by each of them. Some properties of such families are formally derived, and some very simple examples are presented in order to clarify such properties and comparisons

    Sheet Bending by Means of Diode Laser: Analysis of Process Parameters

    In this paper an experimental investigation on the laser forming of steel sheet performed by means of diode laser operating in a wide range of power is carried out. The sheet bending angle is measured during laser irradiation and its analysis permits to withdraw some fundamentals considerations on the forming mechanism. The amount of sheet bending is affected by the properties of the work material, by the laser beam power distribution and by the feed speed, which in turn result to be the main factors controlling the process. A technological model is presented for the prediction of the sheet bending in multi-pass operations, which takes into account the machining parameters as well as the bending evolution during the first stages
