Three Grades of Downward Causation
this paper presents three different models of causation that make room in different ways for the idea that there can be downward causation going from the psychological to the physical level
Downward Causation: An Opinionated Introduction
Introduction to the contemporary debate on downward causation in science and philosoph
A tool for analysing depth resolution in potential-field inversion: application to the Neapolitan Volcanic Area
A careful management of the data errors in potential field inversion is crucial for obtaining reliable information about the source distribution with respect to depth. The Depth Resolution Plot introduced by Fedi, Hansen and Paoletti provides a convenient tool for this analysis: it allows a computational/visual analysis of how much the depth resolution in a potential-field inversion problem is influenced by the way the problem is discretized and regularized. Here we present a variant of the Depth Resolution Plot, called Approx Depth Resolution Plot, which is better suited for large-scale problems, and we employ it to study the retrievable depth resolution in the inversion of the gravity field of the Neapolitan Volcanic Area
Feasibility of FSJ of thermoplastics and Carbon Fiber reinforced thermosetting laminates
The feasibility of Friction Stir Joining (FSJ) process applied to join amorphous thermoplastic sheets and CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers) with thermosetting matrix is investigated, experimentally. A preliminary experimental plan involving the variation the welding speed and tool rotation was conducted. IR thermal analysis is performed along with the analysis of the material flow to determine the influence of the process parameters on the developing processing conditions. Mechanical characterization of the welds was performed to understand the influence of the processing conditions on the weld quality, defects, and strength. Fracture surface analysis and optical microscopy analysis were carried out to investigate the interface between the substrates and the penetration of the carbon fibers within the polycarbonate (PC). The results indicate relatively high mechanical strength of the joints that suggests the possibility to adopt FSJ to produce such hybrid structures
Who’s Afraid of Non-Existent Manifestations?
I shall defend in this paper the thesis that, if there are irreducible powers such as the power to produce a certain object (generative powers), then there are objects that do not exist and they are part of the fundamental level of the universe. Thus, generative powers come together with Meinongianism. After having clarified my argument, I shall examine and criticize Armstrong (1997)’s attempt to reduce powers to other sorts of entities. Finally, I shall deal with five accounts of generative powers that are somehow alternative to Meinongianism and with some (more general) miscellaneous concerns about the truth of this doctrine
Envisioning the Future: a Remote Neuropsychopedagogic Intervention for Inmates
[EN] The pandemic has implied a massive digitalization of psycho-pedagogical and educational interventions in different contexts, including the prison setting. Patrizio Paoletti Foundation (Assisi, Italy) has created Envisioning the Future (EF), a neuropsycho-pedagogical program aimed at increasing personal wellbeing, that was also remotely conducted among the inmates of the Padua (Italy) prison. The program was remotely implemented from May 2021 to June 2021, at the climax of the pandemic emergency, with the collaboration of the University of Padua (Italy) and of Padua prison (Italy). Through key neuroscientific findings and daily practices for wellbeing, EF aims at increasing inmates’ emotion regulation abilities. The responses of nine inmates to the Scales of Personal Self-efficacy in the Management of Negative and Positive Emotions, before and after EF, were paired and subjected to analysis of covariance, revealing an increase in the ability to manage positive emotions after EF. To date, EF is one of the first remote neuropsycho-pedagogical experiences in Italian prisons, able to positively impact on individual well-being.Di Giuseppe, T.; Perasso, GF.; Maculan, A.; Vianello, F.; Paoletti, P. Reciprocal root locus approach to path planning for multiple mobile robots
The path planning problem for multiple mobile robots is addressed in this study. Given the available mobile robots and the tasks to be executed, at the highest planning level a first problem is the assignment of tasks to robot or AGV, the second is path planning. In this case a quickplanning is desirable for computing feasible paths in a given workspace without congestion. The proposed solution is based on the theory of conformal transformations that can be used to map the given workspace in a more appealing geometric setting. Some examples are considered to illustrate the proposed technique and its efficienc
