An Experimental Study on the Performance of Two Temperature Sensors Based on 4H-SiC Diodes
The Critical Response to George Eliot
The appearance of a new anthology of George Eliot criticism would need to justify its place on the shelf beside the indispensable collections of essays assembled by Gordon S. Haight, D.R. Carroll, William Baker, Barbara Hardy and K.M. Newton. However, so much valuable and interesting Eliot criticism has been published in the past two decades that there is still room for a critical revaluation of this work. Karen Pangallo\u27s George Eliot: A Reference Guide, 1972-1987 (Boston: G .K. Hall, 1990), is evidence of her knowledge in this area. However, the gap for a good selection of recent Eliot criticism is not filled by her new compilation. The volume\u27s title suggests that it is a comprehensive reference work; instead it contains mostly undistinguished recent essays on some of George Eliot\u27s best known novels (the book does not cover Scenes of Clerical Life, Impressions of Theophrastus Such, or any of the poetry), complemented by a selection of extracts taken from contemporary reviews and The George Eliot Letters. The only quotations from George Eliot are minor excerpts from the letters, and some background about the correspondents would be useful to those readers who are unfamiliar with Eliot\u27s life. The exclusion of Eliot\u27s own essays, reviews and translations is also to be regretted.
In her introduction, Pangallo explains that her book attempts to demonstrate how Eliot\u27s contemporaries and critics of the 1970s to the 1990s all respond to the same theme, \u27the self within society and its interconnections\u27 (1). This is so general a theme as to cover more or less everything; Eliot\u27s readers find her novels interesting for more specific reasons than this. Pangallo\u27s justification for the principle on which her book is organized is that her theme \u27speaks to Eliot\u27s readers then and today\u27 (7). This is limp beside the vitality of the books themselves
Highly Linear Temperature Sensor Based on 4H-Silicon Carbide p-i-n Diodes
The linear dependence on temperature of the voltage drop difference measured on two diodes biased at different constant currents has been characterized in a range from room temperature up to 573 K. The realized proportional to absolute temperature sensor shows a good level of linearity and the corresponding rms error lower than 0.3%. Moreover, a maximum sensitivity of 610 μ V/K has been obtained, with an extrapolated output converging to 0 V at T=0 K, in agreement with theory and allowing a single-point temperature calibration
Lessico psicologico e abilità di mentalizzazione nella preadolescenza.
A few experimental studies reported a close association between the frequency of use of mental state terms and theory of mind performance (Hughes et al., 1998; Hughes et al., 2007), while the relationship between mental state talk and mentalizing abilities in spontaneous contexts is less explored. Furthermore, the majority of studies in this field deal with infancy and childhood, and less attention has been devoted to more advanced ages.
This research aims at testing the association between pre-adolescents’ mentalizing behaviour, and the ability to use mental state talk in explaining people’s behaviour. The participants were 42 pre-adolescents (aged 12 years) from middle SES high schools. The Child Attachment Interview (Shmueli-Goetz et al., 2008) was used to explore mental state talk. A vignette-based semi-structured interview (O’Connor et al., 1999) was administered in order to evaluate mentalizing abilities. Three levels in mentalizing responses were discerned, in conformity with the authors’ classification. Verbal intelligence was assessed using the verbal subscale of WISC-III.
Results indicated a high correlation between mentalization abilities and mental state talk, either according to quantity or to variety. In addition, there was no association between mental state talk and verbal abilities, nor between mental state talk and gender
4H-SiC p-i-n diode as highly linear temperature sensor
The linear dependence on temperature of the voltage drop VD across a forward-biased 4H-SiC p-i-n diode is investigated experimentally. The results show that the fabricated temperature sensor has a high degree of linearity in the range from room temperature up to 573 K corresponding to a root-mean-square error lower than 0.5%. A maximum sensitivity of 2.66 mV/K was calculated. The low saturation current of the p-i-n diode, well below the forward biasing current also at high temperatures, reduces the nonlinear effects in the VD-T characteristic allowing the design and fabrication of highly linear sensors operating in a wider temperature range
High-Performance Temperature Sensor Based on 4H-SiC Schottky Diodes
A high-performance temperature sensor based on coupled 4H-SiC Schottky diodes is presented. The linear dependence on temperature of the difference between the forward voltages appearing on two diodes biased at different constant currents, in a range from 30 °C up to 300 °C, was used for temperature sensing. A high sensitivity of 5.11 mV/°C was measured. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental result about a proportional-to-absoluteerature sensor made with SiC diodes, showing both a good degree of linearity and long-term stability performance
Identification of self(in)compatibility genotypes and microsatellite marker based fingerprinting of traditional italian sweet cherry accessions
Italy is one of the main European sweet cherry producers and it has a rich germplasm, including many minor local varieties that have not been well studied or used in breeding programmes. Sweet cherry is self-incompatible, with few exceptions; its incompatibility is controlled by a multi-allelic S locus, which is gametophytically expressed. The knowledge of S-alleles and cross-incompatibility groups of sweet cherry genotypes and cultivars is important for growers and breeders. In this work we analysed 48 traditional sweet cherry varieties and cultivars, mainly from Calabria and Emilia Romagna regions, together with eight Sicilian cultivars and the standard set of reference genotypes proposed by the European Collaborative Programme for Genetic Resources (ECPGR) Prunus group (Clarke and Tobutt, 2009), using molecular markers. Two consensus primer pairs for the incompatibility (S) locus, and eight microsatellite (SSR) primers, recommended by the ECPGR, were used in multiplexed reactions to characterise the accessions. Twelve different S-alleles were detected. S3, S6 and S13 alleles were the most common. Accessions were assigned to incompatibility groups. The chosen SSRs were able to discriminate most of the accessions and to discover duplicates and synonyms. Our results are useful for efficiently design orchards and planning crosses for future breeding programmes. The usefulness of some accessions for breeding is discussed
