Disclosure of Goodwill Impairment under AASB 136 from 2005–2010
An accounting standard for goodwill, AASB 136 Impairment of Assets was implemented in Australia in 2005. However, several issues of compliance with the Standard were noted in the initial adoption periods. This study
examines goodwill reporting practices in Australia over the five-year period from 2005 to 2010. It explores the extent to which Australian listed entities complied with mandatory requirements in relation to impairment
testing. Using a sample of 287 Australian listed firms, we found that compliance with the Standard’s goodwill allocation requirements generally improved; however, there was still non-compliance for all reporting periods.
Also, there was a tendency for firms to define the same or smaller numbers of cash-generating units (CGUs) than reporting segments. This suggests the existence of CGU aggregation, which may have the capacity to
influence the incidence of goodwill impairment, and thereby the financial position of an entity. Coupled with non-compliance and a lack of audit attention, compliance issues surrounding goodwill impairment testing
under AASB 136 still remain of concern to regulators. The findings are useful to academics, regulators and policymakers because they signal the (lack of) compliance with AASB 136
Establishing fine-grained sediment budgets for the Pang and Lambourn LOCAR catchments, UK
An integrated approach to data collection, combining the use of 137Cs measurements, sediment source fingerprinting, bed sediment surveys and conventional river monitoring, has been successfully employed to establish the fine-grained sediment budgets of two lowland groundwater-fed catchments in the UK. Gross surface erosion is higher on cultivated land (Pang: 55 263 t yr−1 or 507 t km−2 yr−1; Lambourn: 79 997 t yr−1 or 437 t km−2 yr−1) than on pasture (Pang: 1960 t yr−1 or 140 t km−2 yr−1; Lambourn: 1425 t yr−1 or 95 t km−2 yr−1) in both study areas and a substantial proportion of the mobilized sediment is sequestered within the fields (Pang: 28 058 t yr−1 or 228 t km−2 yr−1; Lambourn: 55 575 t yr−1 or 281 t km−2 yr−1) and between the individual fields and the river channel network (Pang: 28 672 t yr−1 or 233 t km−2 yr−1; Lambourn: 24 782 t yr−1 or 125 t km−2 yr−1). The sediment contribution from banks and subsurface sources is relatively low and typically ca. 5 t yr−1 in the Pang and ca. 11 t yr−1 in the Lambourn, representing only about 1% of the suspended sediment output from each study catchment. The mean level of fine-grained sediment storage in the main channel system is equivalent to 38% (Pang) and 21% (Lambourn) of the respective mean annual suspended sediment yields of the two catchments. The estimated sediment delivery ratio for both study catchments is ca. 1%
Gq Protein-Coupled Membrane-Initiated Estrogen Signaling Rapidly Excites Corticotropin-Releasing Hormone Neurons in the Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus in Female Mice
CRH neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) play a central role in regulating the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and are directly influenced by 17β-estradiol (E2). Although compelling evidence has suggested the existence of membrane-associated estrogen receptors (mERs) in hypothalamic and other central nervous system neurons, it remains unknown whether E2 impacts CRH neuronal excitability through this mechanism. The purpose of the current study is to examine the existence and function of mER signaling in PVN CRH neurons. Whole-cell recordings were made from CRH neurons identified by Alexa Fluor 594 labeling and post hoc immunostaining in ovariectomized female mice. E2 (100nM) rapidly suppressed the M-current (a voltage-dependent K(+) current) and potentiated glutamatergic excitatory postsynaptic currents. The putative Gq-coupled mER (Gq-mER) characterized in hypothalamic proopiomelanocortin neurons initiates a phospholipase C-protein kinase C-protein kinase A pathway; therefore, we examined the involvement of this pathway using selective inhibitors. Indeed, the ER antagonist ICI 182780 and inhibitors of Gq-phospholipase C-protein kinase C-protein kinase A blocked E2's actions, suggesting dependence on the Gq-mER. Furthermore, STX, a selective ligand for the Gq-mER, mimicked E2's actions. Finally, to examine the in vivo effect of Gq-mER activation, E2 or STX injection increased c-fos expression in CRH neurons in the PVN, suggesting CRH neuronal activation. This corresponded to an increase in plasma corticosterone. We conclude that the Gq-mER plays a critical role in the rapid regulation of CRH neuronal activity and the HPA axis. Our findings provide a potential underlying mechanism for E2's involvement in the pathophysiology of HPA-associated mood disorders.Peer reviewe

PanG, a New Ketopantoate Reductase Involved in Pantothenate Synthesis
Pantothenate, commonly referred to as vitamin B5, is an essential molecule in the metabolism of living organisms and forms the core of coenzyme A. Unlike humans, some bacteria and plants are capable of de novo biosynthesis of pantothenate, making this pathway a potential target for drug development. Francisella tularensis subsp. tularensis Schu S4 is a zoonotic bacterial pathogen that is able to synthesize pantothenate but is lacking the known ketopantoate reductase (KPR) genes, panE and ilvC, found in the canonical Escherichia coli pathway. Described herein is a gene encoding a novel KPR, for which we propose the name panG (FTT1388), which is conserved in all sequenced Francisella species and is the sole KPR in Schu S4. Homologs of this KPR are present in other pathogenic bacteria such as Enterococcus faecalis, Coxiella burnetii, and Clostridium difficile. Both the homologous gene from E. faecalis V583 (EF1861) and E. coli panE functionally complemented Francisella novicida lacking any KPR. Furthermore, panG from F. novicida can complement an E. coli KPR double mutant. A Schu S4 ΔpanG strain is a pantothenate auxotroph and was genetically and chemically complemented with panG in trans or with the addition of pantolactone. There was no virulence defect in the Schu S4 ΔpanG strain compared to the wild type in a mouse model of pneumonic tularemia. In summary, we characterized the pantothenate pathway in Francisella novicida and F. tularensis and identified an unknown and previously uncharacterized KPR that can convert 2-dehydropantoate to pantoate, PanG
