    Effects of microstructure on room temperature fatigue crack initiation and short crack propagation in Udimet 720Li Ni-base superalloy

    An assessment of the effects of microstructure on room temperature fatigue crack initiation and short crack propagation in a Ni-base superalloy is presented. The assessment was carried out on microstructural variants of U720Li, including as-received U720Li, U720Li-LG (large grain variant) and U720Li-LP (large intragranular coherent ?? variant). Fatigue tests were carried out at room temperature using a 20Hz sinusoidal cycling waveform on plain bend bars. Tests were conducted in 3-point bend under load control with an R-ratio of 0.1. A maximum load of 95% ?y was used in all tests. Room temperature fatigue crack initiation was noted to occur due to slip band cracking and from porosity on or just beneath the surface in all materials. Crack propagation was noted to be highly faceted (due to planar slip band cracking) immediately after crack initiation followed by a transition to a flatter Stage II type crack path as crack length increases. U720Li-LP was noted to show the longest fatigue lifetime, followed by U720Li-LG while U720Li shows the shortest life. The longer lifetime of U720Li-LP was linked to a higher resistance to both fatigue crack initiation and short crack propagation. U720Li and U720Li-LG show approximately similar crack initiation resistance although U720Li-LG showed slightly improved short crack growth resistance. The observations have been rationalised in terms of the microstructural characteristics of the materials, and it is believed that larger grain size, larger coherent ?? precipitate size and higher volume fractions of both coherent and primary ?? precipitates will improve overall fatigue lifetimes in PM Ni-base alloys which exhibit planar slip characteristics at room temperature

    Novius marek Ślipiński and Pang sp. nov. (Figs 30–49) Etymology. Dedicated to our friend Prof. Marek Wanat of the Wroclaw University, Poland acknowledging his dedication to study of beetles in New Caledonia. The species name “ marek ” is derived from the first name of Marek Wanat and should be treated as a noun in apposition. Diagnosis. This is the largest species of Novius known so far with its body length over 6.5 mm distinctly exceeding the length of the largest known Asian species reaching up to 5.1 mm. The elongate and almost completely flattened body and the characters of male genitalia will immediately distinguish this species from all larger species of the genus. Description. Length 6.5–7.1 mm. Body elongate, 1.4–1.5 times longer than broad; dorsum weakly convex, almost flat (Figs 39–43), covered by very dense inclined yellowish pubescence, forming irregular pattern of spirals and concentric circles. Colour yellow or yellowish brown; head on vertex and pronotum with central part darker; elytra with irregular darker zigzag pattern, in some specimens hardly visible at all. Head with frontal area shallowly concave; eyes separated by about 2 widths of an eye. Antenna relatively long and loosely articulated, length 1.0–1.3 times frontal width between eyes; three terminal segments form very weak serrate club. Pronotum transverse, 2.4–2.5 times broader than long, broadest slightly before mid-length; lateral sides arcuate more strongly narrowing posteriorly than towards broadly rounded anterior angles. Elytra 1.2–1.3 times as long as broad and about 4 times as long as pronotum. Scutellum triangular, 1.1–1.2 times broader than long. All femora and tibiae slender, not much expanded. Pretarsal claw with large and pointed basal tooth in female, apically split in male. Male genitalia as in Figs 48–52. Female genitalia as in Figs 45–47. Holotype male.     Investigation of Lagrangian coherent structures in a wake-induced boundary layer transition

    The evolution of coherent structures in a flat plate boundary layer transition induced by the cylinder wake is investigated using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE), which characterizes the amount of stretching about the flow trajectory, is used to extract the Lagrangian coherent structures. It is revealed that secondary vortex is induced by the cylinder wake vortices in the near wall region,which would evolve into hairpin vortex as it convects downstream. The subsequent evolvement of the hairpin vortex, characterized by the regeneration of offspring hairpin vortex upstream of it, leads to the appearance of the hairpin packet and the boundary layer finally reaches a turbulent state

Diagnosis: Body small (c. 2.5 mm) (Fig. 3); eyes large, hemispherically prominent (Fig. 4A, B); apical maxillary palpomere bilaterally symmetric, securiform; mandibles simple, without tooth on the inner margin; antennae filiform, pedicel and antennomere 3 subequal in length (Fig. 3A). Pronotum subquadrate, parallel-sided, with a shallow median groove (Fig. 4C). Elytra slightly shortened, disc deeply punctate and reticulate, with longitudinal costae and inconspicuous cells (Fig. 4D). Legs elongate, with lobed tarsomere 4 and simple claws (Figs 3, 4F). Etymology: The name is composed of the prefix Creto derived from the Cretaceous and the Greek word κάνθαρισ, a beetle, derived from the genus Cantharis Linnaeus, 1758, type of Cantharidae.     <i>Telsimia sichuanensis</i> Pang ­­&­­Mao <p>(Fig. 10)</p> <p> <i>Telsimia sichuanensis</i> Pang & Mao, 1979: 101.— Ren <i>et al.</i> 2009: 152; Bi <i>et al</i>. 2022: 25.</p> <p> <i>Telsimia sichuanensis</i> was originally described from China (Pang & Mao 1979) and recently, Bi <i>et al.</i> (2022) provided an illustrated diagnostic account based on its male genitalia in their review of Chinese <i>Telsimia</i> spp. It is added to the Indian fauna of Coccinellidae based on a single male specimen collected from the northeastern Indian state of Manipur. The adult is dorsally fully black except the clypeal margin of head (Fig. 10a) is anteriorly paler yellowish and ventral side is black except mouthparts and antenna are yellowish and the legs are reddish brown. The antenna (Fig. 10b) is 7-segmented and very short with the last antennomere oval and telescoped into the previous antennomere. The last abdominal ventrite in male is posteriorly emarginate (Fig. 10c). The male genitalia (Fig. 10d–g) were found to be identical with the illustrations given by Pang & Mao (1979) and Bi <i>et al</i>.     Establishing fine-grained sediment budgets for the Pang and Lambourn LOCAR catchments, UK

    An integrated approach to data collection, combining the use of 137Cs measurements, sediment source fingerprinting, bed sediment surveys and conventional river monitoring, has been successfully employed to establish the fine-grained sediment budgets of two lowland groundwater-fed catchments in the UK. Gross surface erosion is higher on cultivated land (Pang: 55 263 t yr−1 or 507 t km−2 yr−1; Lambourn: 79 997 t yr−1 or 437 t km−2 yr−1) than on pasture (Pang: 1960 t yr−1 or 140 t km−2 yr−1; Lambourn: 1425 t yr−1 or 95 t km−2 yr−1) in both study areas and a substantial proportion of the mobilized sediment is sequestered within the fields (Pang: 28 058 t yr−1 or 228 t km−2 yr−1; Lambourn: 55 575 t yr−1 or 281 t km−2 yr−1) and between the individual fields and the river channel network (Pang: 28 672 t yr−1 or 233 t km−2 yr−1; Lambourn: 24 782 t yr−1 or 125 t km−2 yr−1). The sediment contribution from banks and subsurface sources is relatively low and typically ca. 5 t yr−1 in the Pang and ca. 11 t yr−1 in the Lambourn, representing only about 1% of the suspended sediment output from each study catchment. The mean level of fine-grained sediment storage in the main channel system is equivalent to 38% (Pang) and 21% (Lambourn) of the respective mean annual suspended sediment yields of the two catchments. The estimated sediment delivery ratio for both study catchments is ca. 1%
