Architectural perspectives in the cathedral of Palermo : image-based modeling for cultural heritage understanding and enhancement
No full textPalermo off ers a repertoire of both artistic
and architectural solid perspective of great beauty and
in large quantity. This paper addresses the problem of
the 3D survey of these works and their related study
through the use of image-based modelling (IBM) techniques.
We propose, as case studies, the use of IBM
techniques inside the Cathedral of Palermo. Indeed, the
church houses a huge and rich sculptural repertoire, dating
back to 16th century, which constitutes a valid field
of IBM techniques application.
The aim of this study is to demonstrate the e ffectiveness
and potentiality of these techniques for geometric
analysis of sculptured works. Indeed, usually the survey
of these artworks is very diffi cult due the geometric complexity,
typical of sculptured elements. In this study,
we analysed cylindrical and planar geometries as well as

Asymmetries in the Italian regional system and their role model
No full textThe chapter illustrates the multidimensional and devolutionary asymmetry characterising Italian regionalism, both in terms of constitutional law and of powers transferred to and used by the regions. The chapter also argues that, over the past 70 years, the constitutional picture of Italian regionalism has become increasingly complex, considering that each special region has 6 Erika Arban, Giuseppe Martinico, and Francesco Palermo developed its own degree of autonomy, and the constitutional reform in 2001 has made it institutionally possible to differentiate the distribution of competences among the ordinary regions as well. The author sketches the trajectory and the current state of the art of the different forms of regional asymmetry, and contends that asymmetry in the books looks way different than it is in action, due to a highly different implementation of the constitutional instruments by the various regions. The chapter also explores the contribution of Italian asymmetric design to the development of federalism/regionalism worldwide. Follia tra creatività, genio e devianza
No full textLa correlazione tra follia e genialità si perde nei tempi e, già nella
seconda metà dell’Ottocento, Cesare Lombroso, medico alienista,
cominciò a sviluppare una fascinazione per quel filo che intreccia la
follia al genio, alla creatività e alla devianza.
Nel suo saggio Sulla pazzia di Cardano del 1855 appare una prima
analisi del rapporto tra genio e follia. L’opera, dedicata a Girolamo
Cardano, ricostruisce il mito della genialità del medico e matematico
rinascimentale.
Questa linea di analisi della anormalità psichica legata alla creatività
geniale e alla devianza lo spinse nel 1897 ad incontrare Lev Tolstoj
per verificare personalmente la presenza, nel romanziere russo,
di segni degenerativi, che aveva già colto sulla base dell’osservazione
delle sue sembianze fotografiche e che lo avevano spinto ad affermare
che avesse «un aspetto cretinoso e degenerato». In seguito a
tale incontro, in cui si scrutarono con reciproca diffidenza, il medico
alienista definì Tolstoj come un esempio di «psicosi epilettoide del
genio».
Questo legame tra follia, creatività e genio pervade quasi tutte le
opere di Lombroso, dalla prima edizione di Genio e follia del 1864, al
successivo L’uomo di genio del 1894. Da allora tale legame è stato studiato e analizzato da diversi studiosi,
da sociologi, da criminologi, da psicologi, da medici, ma anche
da letterati e artisti, andando spesso a riprendere antichi miti e simboli

No full textIl Mezzogiorno medievale anche in tema di santità appare area di frontiera e manifesta, in una prospettiva comparativa, una sua specificità. Melting pot di culture, lingue e religioni, Palermo vide alternarsi, nel corso della sua storia, poteri e popoli che influirono profondamente non solo sulla struttura urbana ma sulla percezione che la città ebbe di sé stessa. A caratterizzare il successo di alcuni santi fu la suggestione esercitata da modelli di santità eremitica, una santità conseguita non con l’impegno pastorale ma attraverso solitudine e ascesi. Va inoltre sottolineata una consistente presenza femminile martiriale, con una serie di sante - Agata, Cristina, Lucia, Ninfa, Oliva, Orsola, Rosalia – rappresentative di castità e di perfezione cristiana. In virtù, forse, di un percorso di autocoscienza cittadina in continuo divenire, tra i secoli XIII e XV Palermo fece vari tentativi prima di scegliere, nel XVII secolo, la sua patrona, Rosalia.Medieval South Italy also in terms of holiness appears border area and manifest in one comparative perspective, its specificity. To characterize the success of some saints were the suggestion exercised from models of hermit holiness, an achieved holiness not with pastoral commitment but through loneliness and asceticism. It also goes underlined a substantial female presence, with a series of saints - Agata, Cristina, Lucia, Ninfa, Oliva, Orsola, Rosalia – representative of chastity and Christian perfection. No full textCentral, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe are among the regions where minority, including linguistic rights, are more developed, at least on paper. Not always, however, have these rights been fully and effectively implemented so far. Several obstacles hamper effective implementation. Besides general problems, such as high costs or administrative and organizational requirements, in many countries of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, linguistic rights have been granted as a concession to the international community rather than out of sincere commitment. Minority rights are thus often highly politicized. In such a context, the role of the judiciary in determining principles and criteria for the practical development of linguistic rights is of extreme importance. The paper casts some light on the adjudication of linguistic rights of national minorities in Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe, by examining the relevant case law and, above all, by trying to infer the underlying principles developed by the courts. It concludes that courts are overall quite deferential to the general political climate in their respective country. At the same time, however, some judicial decisions clearly indicate that courts are gradually emancipating from the mainstream political options and are increasingly able to impose non-majoritarian decisions, thus proving evidence of a slow but evolving establishment of the rule of law
