Portrait of Helen Hunt Jackson painted by A.F. Harmer in 1885, ca. 1885
Photograph of a portrait of Helen Hunt Jackson painted by A.F. Harmer in 1885, ca. 1885. She is turned slightly to the right and is visible from the chest up. She is wearing a high collared light-colored ruffled blouse under a dark dress. The portrait is signed with the artist's initials, "A.F.H.". Jackson was the author of the book "Ramona." Possibly painted from sittings in 1880 or 1882
Design metrics for evaluating the propulsive efficiency of future ships
There is an increasing need for the ship design process to take account of environmental issues such as the emission of greenhouse gases and the likely extension of a carbon dioxide charging mechanism to international shipping. These issues, together with the need for economic viability, provide further incentives to improve the efficiency of propulsion of ships. The main components of powering are firstly reviewed. Individual components and other power saving devices are identified which should contribute to improvements in the overall efficiency of propulsion. Suitable design metrics and procedures, taking into account economic and environmental factors, are recommended for the design of future ships

Un’esperienza didattica in tema di paleonutrizione
The item arises from an "elective" Paleopathology course suggested for students graduating in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan. This course discussed subjects as: molecular paleobiology, tumors and infectious paleopathology, paleonutrition, paleopathological museums and history of medicine. The author dealt with the "paleonutrition" subject. Extremely actual aspects emerged which drew the students' attention
Architectur

Coherent segmentation of video into syntactic regions
In this paper we report on our work in realising an approach to video shot matching which involves automatically segmenting video into abstract intertwinded shapes in such a way that there is temporal coherency. These shapes representing approximations of objects and background regions can then be matched giving fine-grained shot-shot matching. The main contributions of the paper are firstly the extension of our segmentation algorithm for still images to spatial segmentation in video, and secondly the introduction a measurement of temporal coherency of the spatial segmentation. This latter allows us to quantitatively demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on real video data
Author Correction:A cattle graph genome incorporating global breed diversity
The original version of this Article omitted from the author list the 12th and 13th authors Dennis Muhanguzi and Wilson Amanyire, who are from the ‘School of Biosecurity, Biotechnology and Laboratory Sciences (SBLS), College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity, Makerere University, P.O Box 7062, Kampala, Uganda’. Consequently, the final sentence of the Author Contributions incorrectly read ‘D.W., P.T., E.A.J.C., C.E., E.T.O., E.R.A., A. The role of surgery for haematologic neoplasms of bone.
We report on 205 patients with haematologic neoplasms of bone treated from 1985 to 2009. There were 77 patients with primary bone lymphoma, 77 with myeloma and 51 with plasmacytoma. All patients had medical treatments; 43 patients had wide and 162 intralesional surgery. Mean follow-up was 5 years (median, 3.5 years); 11 patients were lost to follow-up. At the latest examination, 99 patients were alive without disease, 20 were alive with disease and 75 were dead of disease; 13 patients (6.7%) had local recurrence; 12 patients (24%) with plasmacytoma developed myeloma. Survival to death was significantly higher after wide resection for lymphoma and plasmacytoma, but not for myeloma. Survival to local recurrence was not statistically different between wide and intralesional surgery for any haematologic neoplasm. Surgical complications including aseptic loosening, infection, neurological deficits and breakage of implants occurred in 21 patients (11%
