A picture is worth…?: photo-elicitation interviewing with formerly homeless adults
No full textWe report on the use of photo elicitation interviewing (PEI) with 13 participants in a qualitative study of formerly homeless men and women with serious mental illness. Following a respondentcontrolled approach, participants were asked to take up to 18 photographs visually portraying positive and negative aspects of their lives and to subsequently narrate the meaning of the photos in a one-on-one interview. Thematic analysis of the photos (N = 205) revealed two approaches to PEI: (a) a “slice of life” and (b) “then vs. now.” Examples show how PEIs yielded deeper, more elaborate accounts of participants’ lives compared to earlier verbal-only interviews. Participants spoke of the benefits of PEI and preferred taking positive as opposed to negative photographs depicting their lives. Implications of PEI as a means of complementing verbal-only data are discussed. By moving away from predetermined content and meaning, respondent-controlled PEIs enhance empowerment and enable creativity.Peer reviewe

No full textThis year’s annual Nulungu lecture at the University of Notre Dame Australia’s Broome Campus will be delivered by Deborah Cheetham, Indigenous Soprano, actor and author of the internationally acclaimed play, White Baptist Abba Fan. She is a graduate of the NSW Conservatorium of Music and Julliard School of Music.
Since her international debut in 1997 Ms Cheetham has performed in the theatres and concert halls of United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and throughout Australia. At the Sydney Olympics in 2000, Ms Cheetham performed her original composition, Dali Mana Gamarada.
During the 2001 Centenary of Federation celebrations Ms Cheetham performed in several major events including the January 1st Concert in Sydney’s Centennial Park when she appeared as a soloist and speaker. She performed with Argentine tenor, Jose Cura at the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup in 2003. This was broadcast to a worldwide audience of more than one billion. In 2005, Deborah added to her list of international credit engagements in Paris, including performances at the Australian Embassy and the La Cigale in the Marais
In 2006 Deborah was a recipient of the Australia Council, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts fellowship. The fellowship enabled Deborah to write, direct and produce a 21st century Australian opera, Pecan Summer. The work created opportunities and demonstrated the talents of Indigenous singers and musicians, actors, writers and technicians.
On 22nd February this year Deborah performed the national anthem at the memorial service for the victims of the Black Saturday bushfires. Of the service Deborah said , ‘Joined by a massed choir of over 500 voices I was honoured to pay my respect to the victims and survivors of these terrible fires by singing Advance Australia Fair.’
Deborah will be delivering the Nulungu Lecture at the Broome Campus of The University of Notre Dame, 88 Guy Street, Broome, on Thursday 20 August at 5.00pm. The Nulungu Reconciliation Lecture is to be an annual event on the Broome Campus where key speakers will be invited to address issues of Reconciliation that shape contemporary Aboriginal and Australian thought and experience. Provider views of harm reduction versus abstinence policies within homeless services for dually-diagnosed adults
No full textHarm reduction is considered by many to be a legitimate alternative to abstinence-based services for dually diagnosed individuals, yet there is limited understanding of how varying approaches affect front-line practice within supportive housing services for homeless adults. This paper examines how front-line providers working with individuals who have experienced homelessness, serious mental illness, and addiction view policies of harm reduction versus abstinence within two distinctly different approaches to homeless services: the traditional or ‘treatment first’ (TF) approach that requires abstinence and the more recent Housing First (HF) approach that incorporates harm reduction. As part of a federally-funded qualitative study, 129 in-depth interviews conducted with 41 providers were thematically analyzed to understand how providers view a harm reduction versus abstinence approach. Themes included: (a) harm reduction as a welcomed alternative; (b) working with ambiguity; and (c) accommodating abstinence. Drawing on recovery principles, we consider the broader implications of the findings for behavioral health care with this population.Peer reviewe
“How do we force six visits on a consumer?”: street-level dilemmas and strategies for person-centered care under Medicaid fee-for-service
No full textThis qualitative study examines the delivery of person-centered care in Medicaid-funded supportive housing for adults with serious mental illness. While much work has been done to promote the uptake of a person-centered approach in healthcare, less is known about how this approach functions in homeless services and supportive housing where many individuals with mental health issues receive rehabilitative services. A total of 84 semi-structured interviews were collected from a purposeful sample of 35 frontline providers. Transcripts were analyzed inductively using Boytazis’ thematic analysis. Three principle themes characterize the dilemmas experienced by street-level workers in these programs: (1) Putting the “consumer first” vs. achieving maximum billing; (2) Doing the "real work" vs. paperwork; and (3) Juggling clinical supervision vs. administrative oversight. In order to meet the demands of Medicaid, as well as the expectation for person-centered care delivery, providers enacted several discretionary strategies at the street-level: (1) Staying late and taking work home; (2) Padding the numbers; (3) Offering service recipients small choices; (4) Redirecting small talk to get to billable goal talk; and (5) Keeping consumers home. Findings highlight tensions between the accountability-focused fee-for-service model and the prioritization of consumer choice and individualization of services in person-centered care delivery.Peer reviewe
The Illuminated Lyric of Lafracoth
No full textA medieval historical fiction in dramatic form for older adolescents and adults, this verse play depicts a person of conscience in early 12th century Ireland. This work is intended for late adolescents and adults who have either acquired or are engaged in higher education. The author envisions uses in classrooms, drama and book clubs in which conscience sensitive character analyses and discussions of moral life in and out of religious contexts are deemed worthy of pursuit.

In this illustrated version, artist Deborah C. Galvin was asked to create five illuminations for the letters P, A, C, E and M which figure prominently in the conflicted story of Lafracoth and her father. Deborah obliged but was not satisfied with just five. Over the two years 2008-2010, she completed sixteen times that many. In 2012, these were exhibited in a crafted parchment paper version of the manuscript at The Helen Beiser MD Art Show during the 59th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in San Francisco and again that same year at the Fourth Annual Indiana University School of Medicine Art Exhibition in Indianapolis
