Listening for the Spirit of God in Our Pursuit of Justice: Spirituality and Justice in the Jewish Tradition

    No full text
Judaism is an action-focused tradition. From the commandments given at Sinai and the shouts of Israel’s ancient prophets to the teachings of contemporary women and men of prophetic vision and witness, Judaism calls upon people to end poverty, oppression, and all forms of injustice. But what is the relationship between spirituality and justice in Jewish tradition? In this lecture, Rabbi Rachel Timoner will explore the meaning of God as spirit, ways of discerning God’s spirit in and around us, spiritual practices that help us nurture the gifts of God’s spirit in our lives, and how all of this relates to the covenantal call for creating a better world. Rabbi Rachel Timoner is associate rabbi at Leo Baeck Temple in Los Angeles, where her focus is on social justice, spiritual life, and lifelong learning, and she is the author of Breath of Life: God as Spirit in Judaism, published by Paraclete Press. She was born and grew up in Miami, Florida, earned a B.A. degree from Yale University, and was ordained by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where she was a Wexner Graduate Fellow and received numerous awards, including one for excellence in biblical studies and another for scholarly writing. Before entering rabbinical school, she worked for thirteen years with social justice non-profit organizations, was named by the San Francisco Examiner and KQED (PBS) as an “Unsung Hero” for working to break the isolation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered youth, and empowering young people to feel proud of who they are. She was also a Next Generation Leadership Fellow of The Rockefeller Foundation, and received the Do Something National BRICK Award for Community Leadership. The purpose of this article is to highlight the value of an interesting book kept in the Monasterio de Jerónimas de San Pablo in Toledo which contains, among other texts, a copy of a work written by Ana de Zúñiga (Toledo, 1540-1594). This noble nun wished to compile and compose a collection of the lives of women who had lived in the aforementioned monastery where she became prioress. Her intention was to weave a genealogy of exemplary female devotional experiences and preserve their memory, which contributed to building the identity of her religious community. Several of the women biographed came from the high nobility of Toledo (or were closely related to it) and, in some cases, became models of spiritual wisdom praised by later reputed hagiographers such as Alonso de Villegas and José de Sigüenza

Assessment of the aquatic macroinvertebrate communities in seven cut-off channels in the French Upper-Rhône River, ten years after the restoration works

    1) A functional analysis of aquatic invertebrate assemblages was carried out to supplement a more traditional analysis of taxonomic composition in a restored floodplain of the French Upper-Rhône. The data originated from the long-term (2003-2015) monitoring of seven lateral or cut-off channels in the Belley sector. The restoration of the floodplain occurred in winter 2004-2005 and comprised an increase in the residual flow in the by-passed river and the dredging or reconnection of some floodplain channels. Both measures increased the lateral hydrological connectivity between the river and the floodplain water-bodies. 2) Taxonomic composition and three taxonomic metrics, i.e. rarefied richness, relative abundance of alien species, and Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and Plecoptera (EPT) richness, were analyzed for up-and downstream sites of six restored and one control cut-off channels. In parallel, 11 traits divided in 59 categories were selected to analyze the trait composition. Three complementary functional diversity indices and seven metrics from Merritt et al. (2002) used as surrogates of ecosystem attributes to provide an insight into functional ecosystem processes. 3) In contrast to our expectations, neither a functional homogenization due to the overall increase of lateral connectivity nor similar patterns of changes in comparable sites were observed. This reflects a high taxonomic and functional diversity between sites. The majority of the biotic variables we assessed at the site scale fluctuated between years, and though dificult to quantify, this suggests a level of dynamism that we interpret as a positive sign in the recovery of a 'living and flowing' Rhône River, as expressed in the original aims of the restoration project. 4) The study points the need to improve our understanding of the cut-off channel functioning to optimize ecological restoration projects of large floodplain sectors. We were also faced with issues related to trait information and we suggest that direct field or laboratory measurements of the traits carried by 'actual' individuals, and linking them with the ecosystem functioning would provide more precise and meaningful functional analyses

Macroinvertebrate Diversity Distribution and Response to Climate Change in Running Waters of Switzerland

    No full text
In Switzerland, the mean annual temperature has increased by approximatively 2°C since 1864, for the most part in the last 40 years, and the temperature is expected to keep increasing. The warming of water and the changes in the flow regime are very likely to affect freshwater ecosystems. Rivers and streams of Switzerland suffer multiple anthropogenic pressures that impact their physicochemical and morphological properties. This results in a significant proportion of running waters showing a poor biological state, and climate change imposes an additional stress to biodiversity, increasing the species extinction risk. So far, no study has formally predicted (i.e. through predictive models) the potential impacts of climate change on Swiss river and stream biodiversity. Despite all the uncertainties inherent to any modelization process in ecology, this thesis aims at filling this gap using niche-based models, and at offering a countrywide insight into the running water biodiversity in the face of climate change. More generally, it informs about the main drivers of stream biodiversity of temperate mountainous regions that are impacted by human activity, and provides insights into the relative importance of the climate change threat for running water ecosystems.

Differences between gridded population data impact measures of geographic access to healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa

Access to health care is imperative to health equity and well-being. Geographic access to health care can be modelled by combining different spatial datasets, among others, on the distribution of existing health facilities and populations. Several population datasets are currently available, but their impact on accessibility analyses is unknown. In this study, we model the geographic accessibility of public health facilities at 100-meter resolution in sub-Saharan Africa and explore the effect of six among the most popular gridded population datasets on coverage statistics at different administrative levels. We found differences in accessibility coverage of more than 70% at the sub-national level, based on a one-hour travel time threshold. Differences are significant in large and sparsely populated administrative units, dramatically shaping patterns of health care accessibility at the national and sub-national level. The results underscore an essential source of uncertainty in accessibility analyses that should be systematically assessed in policy-making

CENSURAS, SILENCIOS Y MAGISTERIO FEMENINO EN LA ADICIÓN A LA TERCERA PARTE DEL FLOS SANCTORUM DE ALONSO DE VILLEGAS

This article is part of an investigation on the configuration of the female spiritual teaching within the framework of the Counter-Reformation, based on the analysis of the various changes that the Adición (first published in 1588) to the Third Part of the Villegas’s Flos Sanctorum (Cortés, 2021) and the attention to the remarkable hagiographic absences. The “Addition” relates exemplary lives of women and men, born in the Middle Ages or the Renaissance, who were considered worthy of reaching canonization and whose sanctity, in some cases, the Church ended up making official. Among the modifications, it stands out, on the one hand, the elimination of the life of the Dominican María de la Visitación that, at the same time, influenced the revision of the biography of the visionary María de Ajofrín and, on the other hand, the incorporation of the section dedicated to Ana de Zúñiga, author of a set of biographies of nuns linked to the Toledo San Pablo’s convent that Villegas takes into account for his elaboration (in the second edition) of ten brief reports that stand as a model of piety related to Tridentine values.

This article aims to show the resemblances that we can find between Admiraçión operum Dey written by Teresa de Cartagena in the mid-XVth century and Respuesta de sor Filotea de la Cruz written by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz two hundred years later. Both works are two epistles where the female’s intellectual capacity to know and to write is defended by a nun who was received critized for a former work. The religious Teresa de Cartagena –converse bishop Pablo Cartagena’s granddaughter– wrote a moral essay that surprised male readers who considered that the text was a plagiarism. On the other hand, the hieronymite sister sor Juana Inés was reproached by a clergyman for having written the polemic treatise on theology Carta Atenagórica
