Ancora sulla “città dei ciechi”. Bisanzio e Calcedone fra oracoli e correnti marine

    No full text
The paper focuses on the comparison between Byzantium and Chalcedon, a topos present under different forms in our sources, from Herodotus to Polybius, Strabo, Plinius the Elder, Tacitus and Hesychius Illustris. The author suggests a possibly reading of the different steps of this tradition and hypothesizes that the turning of the mark of the “city of the blind” into an oracular response belongs to the second half of the 3rd cent. BC

Parte A. Storici greci. 2. Testi storici anepigrafi.

    No full text
The volume belongs to the Corpus dei papiri storici greci e latini, a systematic collection of all papyrus fragments of Greek and Latin historians under the supervision of a scientific committee. The book presents a new critical edition, with transcription, translation and commentary, of ten papyrus fragments which preserve otherwise lost narratives concerning Alexander the Great. All textual problems are carefully investigated; in the commentaries the author expands on the individual textual, historical and linguistic aspects and suggests different interpretative solutions. The volume closes with a chapter which summarizes the conclusions reached, discusses the relevant scholarship on the historiography on Alexander and is very thorough and helpful in locating these fragments in their historical context

This paper looks at the partial apotheosis of Alexander the Great, providing a survey of his posthumous reception in Macedonia and Greece. Another key piece of evidence is Alexander's funeral organized in Egypt by Ptolemy son of Lagus. The main focus of the paper, however, is on what we know of Alexander's own behaviour and what we can conclude from it about the persona he sought to cultivate and convey. The author also aims to offer answers to some basic questions: firstly whether, towards the end of his life, Alexander deliberately acted in ways which suggested godhood, with careful consideration of his behaviour at Hephaistion's funeral; and, secondly, whether he took steps to establish an official apotheosis, with an analysis of the ancient very scanty tradition

Diodoro Siculo. Biblioteca storica. Libro XVII. Commento storico

    No full text

Alexander the Great and his Neglected Advisers The paper focuses on advisers at the Macedonian court in the fourth century BC, particularly during the conquest of the Persian Empire. Our sources depict Alexander as a king reluctant to accept any suggestion given by his companions or relatives. An overview of the cases allows us to deal with the main issues raised by the works of Alexander Historians: the reliability of their information and the validity of our hypotheses. Prandi Luisa. Polibio e Callistene: una polemica non personale?

The paper has been committed by the organizers of the Volume "The shadow of Polybius. Intertextuality as research Tool in Greek Historiography", in order to complete a full analysis of the impact of this historian over his predecessors; the paper studies carefully all the quotations of Callisthenes made by Polybius – with a particular care for the manuscript tradition of the fragmentary Book XII - and highlights Polybius’ mental attitude towards Callisthenes. The author defines also the place of Polybius among the various ancient traditions about Callisthenes both as a person and as an historian

Platone e l’”utopia democratica”? (Considerazioni su Menesseno, Timeo 20e-24e e Crizia)

Plato’s Menexenus and Critias, very different from other Platonic Dialogues, are devoted the first to exhibit an epitaphios logos recited by Socrates and the second to the fascinating history of an ancient and « mythical » war between Athens and Atlantis. We can find many links between them and check the hypothesis that Plato repeatedly experienced various ways and techniques, included utopian elements, in order to stir up a debate on contemporary Athens.Furthermore, recognizing utopian features in Menexenus becomes a new and promising way to a better understanding of a very puzzling Dialogue : a fruitful ambiguity (besides hyperbole and parody) marks many passages, so that a same statement can suggest antithetic interpretations. Plato criticizes, throughout the Menexenus, the epitaphios logos and the public burial rites in Athens just because they are an occasion to celebrate its democratic system. However he does not condemn the basic idea to celebrate the polis, and with Critias he wrote following an « epitaphic style » the record of the victory of Athens over Atlantis
