    No full text
This contribution proposes some considerations on the concept of geographical limit and its spatial definition in a landscape archaeology perspective. In particular throughout case studies it illustrates some methodological issues related to the analysis of territorial boundaries in prehistory. This approach includes the idea of investigating cultural boundaries and identity processes related to landscape. The paper also focuses on possible means and tools that can be used to explore this sort of boundaries. Moreover some thoughts on the role of perception in the making of prehistoric landscape are presented

From legacy data to survey planning? The relationship between landscape and waterscape in southern Tuscany during the Upper Palaeolithic: towards a predicitive-postdictive approach

During the Upper Palaeolithic, Southern Tuscany was strongly affected by geomorphological changes that significantly altered its coastal seaboard. In particular, during the Last Glacial Maximum, the sea reached a level below 100 meters. As a result of this, the prehistoric coastland included also the present Tuscan Archipelago, in particular the Islands of Elba and Pianosa, assuming a different layout during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 and 2. In this context, the process of prehistoric occupation took place, according to different needs and criteria. The present work explores the possibility of investigating the dynamic relationship between the prehistoric landscape and waterscape by a predictive-postdictive approach. Alongside the simulation of coastal changes, the study makes use of legacy data, taking into account those derived from artefact surface scatters collected over the past decades by various research groups. The latter provide further evidence of the prehistoric occupation process. In this scenario it is crucial to highlight areas that potentially still retain some relict features of the Palaeolithic landscape. These are examined in order to better understand settlement strategies taking place during the Upper Palaeolithic and, at the same time, to investigate the relationship between inland and coastal sites in a diachronic perspective. Although still ongoing, preliminary results provide new elements for the planning of future field surveys

The paper proposes some general considerations on the diffusion of castellieri and tumuli in the Friulian territory resulting from the elaboration of thematic maps produced within a GIS environment. This preliminary framework constitutes the basis for developing further remarks on the tools and sources functional to the characterisation and identification of castellieri and burial mounds, i.e. the presence of anthropic morphologies or landforms. Historical cartography and remote sensing, spanning from Lodovico Quarina’s surveys to LIDAR data, constitute the preferred references for developing analytical and monitoring processes of anthropic morphologies and thus of archaeological evidence

Caves and shelters characterise the landscape of Natisone basin and constitute a natural resource exploited by human communities during Prehistory and Protohistory. The contribution presents the first steps of a project aiming to explore prehistoric settlement strategies of this valley system that connects the Friulian plain to the alpine reliefs. Here we expose some critical issues related to the building up of the GIS that is used to compare different sources and to carry on the analysis. A rich list of caves, shelters and other hypogeal features, available from the speleological archive of Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, has been acquired into the GIS system and represents a primary information in order to evaluate which of these cavities have been occupied by prehistoric people. We propose some observations on the prehistoric use of the different type of hypogeum starting from a perspective that considers the caves as elements of the prehistoric landscape. Are caves temporary or seasonal shelters related to mobile human groups? The problems and potentialities of the analysis of this long-lasting phenomenon are explored through archaeological and spatial criteria. The study aims to individuate which are the characterising features involved in the settlement strategies of these valleys. The analysis highlights some topographical issues that we think might be significant for the interpretation of caves and the study of the prehistoric landscape of the Natisone basin. Through the GIS tools we explore the different location of prehistoric sites and we propose the identification of three settlement typologies. These are useful for identifying areas in the Natisone Valleys that express different relationships with the prehistoric landscape. To date, the sites located in the contact belt between the Prealps and the high plain show consistent evidence that may also derive from the role of this zone as a ‘hinge’ between the various geographical areas. The Biarzo rock-shelter is a main reference for the study of the settlement strategy based on the pattern observed for the Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods. Here the interdisciplinary studies of the archaeological context and artefacts allow the identification of short- and long-range movements, to reach both the Alpine plateaus and the Adriatic coast. In the contact belt between the mountains and the high plain, from the Neolithic through to the Metal Ages, the cavities utilised are mainly the ones close to the summits which provided a wide view across the high plain and in their turn can also be identified from a distance. This evidence suggests uses other than for domestic activities, thus adding other variables into the selection criteria of the cave sites. Starting from the Neolithic, the evidence from the innermost sectors of the hydrographic basin increases. The sites on the slopes, positioned along the interior sectors of the Natisone Valleys, may have responded to a different settlement strategy, perhaps linked to a more local perspective, as suggested by the visibility analyses. Their brief use may also refer to forms of mobility for transhumance with temporary stops which, as is known, leave ephemeral traces. The choice of cavities does not seem to prefer caves with large internal spaces. Around the sites with repeated occupation are hypogeal environments that have revealed the remains of sheep and goats and other domestic species that may indicate an exploitation of nearby cavities as auxiliary environments or facilities

This paper offers a brief introduction to the archaeological framework of prehistoric contexts in Grosseto district focusing on the relationship between landscape dynamics and archaeological potentialities of this territory. Particular attention is dedicated to the southern area of Grosseto taking into considerations alluvial plain and the coastal belt of Uccellina Mountains. The illustration/presentation of our case study gives us the opportunity to discuss our methodological approach and to highlight the importance of activating virtuous cycle between predicting analysis and field survey test /feedback. One of the aims of this paper is to examine different type of archaeological potentialities which can be explored through the help of predicting assessment. Thus the prehistoric investigations carried out in our study area needs to be related to landscape changes which strongly affected coastal transformation since Palaeolithic period generating different types of “archaeological visibility constrains” that cause low visibility of prehistoric evidence on landscape surface
