    A decomposition model to evaluate evolution and factors of birth prevalence of Down syndrome in Europe

    We describe the Down Syndrome (DS) Birth Prevalence's trend in European countries. We develop a decomposition model which quantifies the effects of the factors (female age distribution, birth distribution by mother age ad selective abortion) on the variation of Down births and DS Birth Prevalence. The decomposition model has been important to understand the past and present dynamics of DS and value the differences in the European countries. A decrease of the Down births number and of the DS Birth Prevalence has been observed in almost every country in time. We stated that this decrease is due in many cases to the diffusion of the selective induced abortions as consequence of the prenatal diagnosis.[...
