No full textThe unsigned polychrome print Les mortels sont égaux, most probably engraved in 1791, may be considered one of the numerous pieces of visual and textual propaganda disseminated during the days of the French Revolution. This paper argues that the print nevertheless stands out for an unequaled capacity to condense the core meanings of secularized eschatology and the West’s self-attributed apostolate, in a single allegory. The iconological analysis focuses on the divinized figures of Nature and Reason, and the attributes of the white man and the black man that the image contains. The author also focuses on the analysis of the text placed under the image, in particular on Voltaire’s distich, which gave the image its title

No full textLa nascita della Cassa per il Mezzogiorno sarebbe impensabile senza l'emergere, nel secondo dopoguerra, del "nuovo meridionalismo". Ma l'autore rileva come già prima si sia formata una vera e propria tradizione di interventi. La ricerca mira a dimostrare come proprio alcuni determinati meccanismi di agevolazione, poi integrati nello strumentario della Casmez, abbiamo già in precedenza avuto una notevole rilevanza pratica per l'irradiarsi della grande industria oltre i confini del triangolo industriale, in principio verso una fascia intermedia nordorientale e centrale., dalle Venezie alla Toscana, e successivamente verso sud. Va però distinta l'espansione cella grande industria dallo sviluppo delle regioni interessate (e leggi speciali spingono, sì, l'industria appena oltre la sua frontiera «naturale», ma i nuovi agglomerati di fabbriche non diventano -poli di sviluppo.. Accanto a una breve rassegna della legislazione speciale per l'industria - dalla legge Nitti per Napoli del 1904 alle zone industriali precedenti e concomitanti con la Cassa per il Mezzogiorno - e una divagazione sulla politica industriale dell'epoca fascista, l'indagine verte sulle zone industriali cresciute o create all'insegna dell'autarchia: Porto Marghera, Livorno, Bolzano, Ferrara, Apuania, Palermo e Roma. La parte conclusiva ricostruisce i flussi politico-culturali che condussero alle leggi speciali del 1950-57 attraverso percorsi piuttosto complessi ed oscillanti, ma sorprendentemente in linea con alcuni mutamenti globali.Published version of EUI PhD thesis, 198

No full textCan musical genres like jazz have a political connotation? The article describes the relationship between jazz and racism during the first half of the twentieth century. It dwells on attempts to use jazz as soft power in the Cold War. Finally, it discusses Lebensgefühl in its relation to aesthetic judgment and the cultural and political relevance of such judgment. Historical evidence suggests that although the links between the aesthetics of jazz and politics are strong, it is impossible to establish a universal relationship of affinity or incompatibility between single political constellations and this genre of music. Full text linkNach 1989 wurden hohe Erwartungen in die Neubegründung des Ostseeraums als Geschichtsregion gesetzt. Den Bürgern der Anrainerstaaten sollten damit neue Möglichkeiten geboten werden, sich mit übernationalen politischen Prozessen und dem ungehinderten Austausch über alle Grenzen hinweg zu identifizieren. Die hier versammelten Beiträge würdigen die durch die EU-Erweiterung erzielten Ergebnisse, ziehen jedoch hinsichtlich der anvisierten Etablierung einer „Ostseeregion“ eine eher ernüchternde Bilanz. Teils im Vergleich mit dem Mittelmeerraum werden die Strukturpolitik für Inseln, die Bemühungen um Demokratisierung der transnationalen Politik, die intellektuellen Anstrengungen zur Verankerung der Großregion sowie deren Wahrnehmung durch Migranten untersucht. Dabei zeigt sich, dass nationale Interessen und Erwartungshorizonte sowie ältere Raumvorstellungen der Etablierung einer „Ostseeregion“ bisher entgegenstehen
