Flexibility of the Levallois method is directly expressed by all combinatorial variants that can occur as regards gesture, single intervention or sequence of interventions, and flaking modality, highlighting a behavioural variability at all the stages of the reduction strategy: raw material selection and beginning of exploitation; production and management; end-product use and shaping; discard. However, due to the still scarce knowledge of technical aims, we deal only partially with the nature of such variants and the controlling factors of the whole production system. In order to provide a new contribution in this sphere, the study of lithic industry of an open-air site is here proposed and discussed.
Criteria for identifying knapping skill level through the analysis of lithic cores : An example from Val Lastari, Late Paleolithic, Italy
The application of knapping skill analysis has increased over the years, starting from the Eighties and, by now, being employed all over the world on different material cultures and chronological periods. We studied the cores reduced at Val Lastari, a Recent Epigravettian lithic workshop in north-eastern Italy, for recognizing the most influential technological variables to define stoneknapping behaviours. In our case, knapping accidents and cores appearance had more weight than criteria such as core preparation and raw material features thanks to the strategies of exploitation chosen by hunter-gatherers of Val Lastari, and to the ecological context they interacted with. This is the first time that a study of its kind has been proposed for an Italian site, becoming a unique possibility to enrich our knowledge about Epigravettian social learning and organization with new and stimulating information
Valorizzare il Paleolitico. Reti territoriali e buone pratiche
The Palaeolithic site of Grotta di Fumane, discovered fi fty years ago in the territory of Valpolicella, is an extraordinary testimony to the way
of life of Neanderthal Man and the fi rst Anatomically Modern Men thanks to the rich archaeological evidence found in its fi ll. The data collected are crucial for studying the birth of symbolic thought in Homo sapiens and for comparing it with that of Neanderthals. For several years now, the cave has been the object of intense promotion leading to several projects being shared with a wide local network of organizations. The National Archaeological Museum of Verona will soon host two large rooms dedicated to this important Palaeolithic site, equipped with multimedia stations, explanatory panels, casts and thematic showcases

IV Incontro Annuale di Preistoria e Protostoria. Applicazioni tecnologiche allo studio di contesti paleolitici e mesolitici italiani. IV Annual Meeting of Prehistory and Protohistory. Application of emerging technologies to Italian Palaeolithic and Mesolithic case-studies. Abstract Book
ricerca archeologica in Italia.
e sapiens.
