Concentration of ethylene oxide in the alveolar air of occupationally exposed workers
Ethylene oxide was tested in environmental air and in the alveolar air of 10 workers employed in a hospital sterilizer unit at hourly intervals during the work shift. Alveolar ethylene oxide concentrations (Ca) were correlated with environmental concentration (Ci) in all the workers studied (r = 0.89-0.99). The ratio between alveolar and environmental concentration (Ca/Ci) given by the slope of the regression line obtained for all the data collected was 0.24. This means that the alveolar retention of ethylene oxide, expressed as 1 - (Ca/Ci), corresponded, on average, to about 75% of the environmental concentration

Steroid hormone sulphation in lead workers
The metabolism of steroid hormones has been investigated in 10 workers exposed to lead and in 10 non-exposed subjects to determine whether lead interferes with the first or second phase reactions of steroid hormone biotransformation, or both. In the exposed workers blood lead concentrations (PbB) ranged from 45 to 69 micrograms/100 ml; in the controls PbB was less than 25 micrograms/100 ml. No statistical differences were found for the total amount of the urinary hormone metabolites, but a drop of about 50% was observed for the sulphated portion. It is suggested that lead interferes with the mechanisms of sulphoconjugation through an effect on the cytosol enzymes sulphotransferase and sulphokinase
Primary cardiac leiomyosarcoma: seven-year survival with combined surgical and adjuvant therapy
Primary cardiac sarcomas constitute a rare entity that have been uniformly associated with poor long-term survival. A case of left atrial leiomyosarcoma involving the interatrial septum and the right atrial free wall and presenting with syncope and atrial fibrillation, is described. Two extensive surgical excisions followed by adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy improved survival with a good quality of life. This approach of combined surgical, medical and radiation therapy may offer better longterm outcome, since our patient is the longest survivor thus far reported
Postoperative chemotherapy increases the disease-free survival rate in primary gastric lymphomas stage IE and IIE
We describe 53 patients with primary gastric non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (38 stage IE,15 stage IIE) treated with surgery as a primary procedure. According to the Working Formulation, 13 cases had low, 21 had intermediate and 19 had high grade malignancy. 34 patients considered at high risk received postoperative polychemotherapy. The overall 10-year disease-related survival is 91%. Median follow-up is 52 months. 7 patients relapsed (13%). The 10-year disease-free survival rate of the 19 patients initially treated with surgery is 60%, as compared with 92% in the patients who also received chemotherapy (P = 0.004). However, overall survival did not differ between the two groups, since two-thirds of the patients who relapsed after surgery alone were rescued with chemotherapy. Stage, age, sex and histology did not correlate with survival. In our experience, surgery was an adequate first step procedure; the addition of chemotherapy significantly reduced relapses and increased the disease-free survival rate in patients with unfavourable prognostic factors
