    No full text
No abstract Als erster übersetzte Anastasios Emmanuel Pappas (Wien 1821) Gedichte von Athanasios Christopoulos ins Deutsche.

The immortality of addiction and the mortality of therapy

As a social problem, addiction includes the sense of immorality. It disdains the fact that the man is his relations, that is the relation with oneself and the relations with the others. It literally abolishes all the necessary and creative communication among people, devaluing the addict to the level of being a subordinate and under the power of every addictive substance. It enslaves the will, the judgement and the feelings of the addict, in order to offer him an illusionary escape of reality. A reality that is really painful for him. In all addictions something tragic happens. The Body stops protecting the Soul and it is transformed into a tool that the substance uses to act upon the brain in order to dictate the ideas and the feelings it wishes. Moreover it deprives the addict from freedom since it makes him incompetent to rule his life conditions, without ruling others. So in order for the addict to achieve his goals, he use an incredible power of manipulation, which offers him the best results with the least effort. With an abundance of irresponsibility, insincerity, delinquency and distortion of reality, he aims only at his own satisfaction, neglecting the other people’s feelings. This overall behaviour is nothing but immoral according to the established rules of healthy and cooperative relations. If on one hand Addiction is described with all these negative characteristics, Therapy on the other hand eliminates them completely. If Addiction diminishes the power of will, judgement and sincere emotional behaviour of people, then Therapy frees the addict’s volition and critical thinking as well as his emotional expression. By demanding a working and voluntary contribution on the part of the addict, in planning and realising the therapeutic program, it empowers his responsibility, transforming him into a man really free and socially functional. By reorganising his relation with the intimate and larger social groups, it creates new personal abilities and objective capacities for pleasant and creative relations with the society he lives in. In other words, it restores morality in the addict’s way of living.47 σ

Seismic Vulnerability Assessment Form for Free-Standing Columns Based on a Simplified Numerical Analysis

    No full text
This article describes the creation of a seismic vulnerability assessment form for free-standing columns, based on Discrete Element Method simulations. A broad range of column configurations, selected after archaeological research, was analyzed. Each soil-column configuration was tested with 56 artificial accelerograms in the range of peak ground acceleration between 0.2 and 0.8 g. Fragility curves were created for each configuration and used to quantify the effects of soil, and the slenderness, height, and number of drums of each column. The influence factors of all parameters were used in the assessment form to categorize the columns into vulnerability classes, according to their probability of collapsing when subjected to a certain level of seismic excitation. The proposed tool can be used for rapid, preliminary, seismic vulnerability assessment, without the need for further sophisticated calculations. Four ancient columns, which have survived earthquakes of known acceleration amplitude, were used to apply, test and validate the proposed assessment form

Abiotic and biotic controls of soil moisture spatio-temporal variability and the occurrence of hysteresis

    No full text
An expression that separates biotic and abiotic controls on the temporal dynamics of the soil moisture spatial coefficient of variation Cv(?) was explored via numerical simulations using a mechanistic ecohydrological model, Tethys-Chloris. Continuous soil moisture spatiotemporal dynamics at an exemplary hillslope domain were computed for six case studies characterized by different climate and vegetation cover and for three configurations of soil properties. It was shown that abiotic controls largely exceed their biotic counterparts in wet climates. Biotic controls on Cv(?) were found to be more pronounced in Mediterranean climates. The relation between Cv(?) and spatial mean soil moisture inline image was found to be unique in wet locations, regardless of the soil properties. For the case of homogeneous soil texture, hysteretic cycles between Cv(?) and inline image were observed in all Mediterranean climate locations considered here and to a lesser extent in a deciduous temperate forest. Heterogeneity in soil properties increased Cv(?) to values commensurate with field observations and weakened signatures of hysteresis at all of the studied locations. This finding highlights the role of site-specific heterogeneities in hiding or even eliminating the signature of climatic and biotic controls on Cv(?), thereby offering a new perspective on causes of confounding results reported across field experiments

Efficiency of alternative intensity measures for the seismic assessment of monolithic free-standing columns

This paper deals with the dynamic response of a free-standing ancient column in the Roman Agora of Thessaloniki, Greece as a means to shed more light on the complex behaviour of rocking bodies under seismic excitation. Numerical analyses utilizing discrete element method were carried out with the use of multiple seismic records selected based on the disaggregation of the seismic hazard for the region of interest. To identify their impact on structural performance, earthquake Intensity Measures, such as Peak Ground Acceleration and Peak Ground Velocity are examined for the case of a column that sustained no visible permanent deformations during the Ms=6.5 Thessaloniki earthquake of 1978. The analysis revealed a weak correlation of PGA and PGV with the response results and a significant influence of the mean frequency (fm) of the seismic motion. No coupling was found between the maximum displacement of the top during the oscillation and the permanent post-seismic deformations. The complementarity of both earthquake Intensity Measures in the structural vulnerability assessment is also depicted

Seismic vulnerability assessment of ancient water towers in Pompeii with kinematic, finite element and discrete element analysis

    No full text
The paper describes the seismic vulnerability assessment of ancient water towers, part of the aqueduct system of Pompeii. For this work the archaeological findings were used which were brought to light after in-situ and laboratory research. For the seismic vulnerability assessment the first step was the kinematic analysis of twelve water towers with different height and slenderness. Following, one tower was selected to be modelled in the finite element software DIANA. Pushover analyses with uniform and 1st mode force distribution were carried out for the safety verification. The same pilaster was used for the two-dimensional discrete element analyses with the software UDEC. The scope of this was to simulate the rocking behaviour during different seismic scenarios in order to investigate the overturning probability for different levels of seismic excitation. Finally, it was investigated the additional vulnerability that a bad masonry condition, due to the lack of masonry blocks or mortar, can create. Based on the results of this work, it was decided if it is necessary or not the strengthening of the analysed water tower

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections. This thesis investigates peak-to-average ratio (PAR) reduction techniques for multicarrier modulation systems, such as discrete multitone (DMT) modems and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) terrestrial broadcast transmitters. Through simulation and test implementation on a state-of-the-art programmable ADSL development platform, this thesis pursues a suitable solution for minimizing PAR given the resources of a programmable platform. This solution is integrated as a prototype implementation into a fully-functional ADSL modem and optimized for maximum PAR reduction performance within modem complexity constraints.by Athanasios Dimitri Dousis.M.Eng
