Structural defects for condition assessment of existing bridges: some results of a territorial case study
Recent events involving the tragic collapse of existing bridges have led to an increasingly detailed study of infrastructure and its maintenance. Italy's intricate road system has a large number of existing bridges demanding urgent and costly maintenance interventions. This study presents a critical review of several defects inspected on existing bridges located in the Basilicata region. The work is addressed at describing the defects surveyed, and at critical evaluating the main causes also due to the interaction with the environmental context surrounding each bridge analysed. Moreover, the paper discusses on how the detailed context knowledge can help to properly identify the correct maintenance intervention on existing bridges

A preliminary investigation on material properties of existing prestressed concrete beams.
This paper reports some preliminary results of an ongoing research activity addressed to collect and to elaborate the main mechanical properties of materials of pre- and post-tensioned concrete girder bridges. In particular, in this work data samples is obtained by analyzing design documents of a stock of existing bridges realized in Basilicata (south of Italy). At first, the paper presents a proposal on how information available is collected. Then, results of the statistical elaborations on the samples gathered are shown, in order to provide useful support in estimating the mechanical properties of the materials used in the bridges typologies considered in this study
Half-joints degradation: analysis of some case studies.
Existing Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridges, due to their age, are very often affected by significant deterioration phenomena, also intensified by lack of maintenance, which strongly reduces their strength with respect to the design load combinations.
In particular, half-joints were widely used in the RC bridge typology until the end of the 20th century. As well known, due to the static scheme adopted, and recurrent failure due to fragile mechanisms, to date these elements are recognized as critical, since their strength is particularly affected by degradation frequently provoked by erosion caused by rainwater infiltration from the roadway. This phenomenon, definitively, leads to a marked concrete cover reduction and corrosion of the reinforcing bars.
This paper deals with the analysis of certain types of half-joints employed in existing reinforced concrete bridges. To this scope, some case studies are illustrated and discussed to highlight weakness points of the typologies analyzed and causes of defects observed
