On variance reduction in some Bernstein-type approximations

    No full text
A linear adjustment for more efficient versions of the Bernstein-type esimators proposed in Pallini (2005) is asymptotically studied, as the sample size becomes increasingly large. The Bernstein-type approximation in Pallini (2005) originate from the well-known definitions of univariate and multivariate Bernstein polynomials in the theory of approximation of continuous functions. The Bernstein-type approximations are defined through a constructive coefficient that conveniently characterizes the velocity of their uniform convergence. The statistical estimation of a smooth function of population mrans is considered, with conclusions about the asymptotic behaviour of the linear adjustment, as the sample size becomes increasingly large. Monte Carlo simulations on the ratio of means example are detailed and discussed

Primary school children’s drawings of Europe: A study on italian children”. Abstracts of the XXIX International Congress of Psychology

The study is part of a wider research ( Amann Gainotti , 2006 ; Amann Gainotti, Pallini , 2006,2007) that aimed at gaining knowledge about European children’s spontaneous ideas and representations of Europe before being taught about Europe in schools . 150 Italian children from first to fifth grade of primary school were asked , after a short interview, to make a drawing of Europe. Results show that children’s graphic representations of Europe follow precise developmental patterns, that outline their very first spatial and geographical notions and give an idea about how “cognitive maps” of a complex entity as Europe are constructed during childhood

Managed Retreat: Reporting from a Seminar

    No full text
This paper presents a joint research seminar held at the Politecnico di Milano on November 28th, 2023. M. Bradbury, who was in Milan for four months with a NEST fellowship, and C. Pallini collaborated on the seminar, with the contribution of A. Korolija, and E. Margione. The seminar was structured into two sections. The first explored case studies from New Zealand and the Netherlands, offering valuable insights into their climate change resilience strategies. The second section focused on Italy, particularly the Pontine Plain, facing numerous climate-related challenges. Some critical issues were identified during the seminar, such as integrating engineering and landscape design and evaluating alternative scenarios, which are pivotal in climate change resilience. The seminar also underscored the necessity of studying the effects of climate transition on towns, cities, and regions, which presents significant challenges to architectural and urban design across various scales

In the 1980s, Sikhs migrated from Punjab, one of the most fertile regions of the Indian subcontinent, to the Pontine Plain. To the Sikh migrants, the Pontine Plain was not just a foreign land but a place that resonated with their homeland's physical features. They settled between Latina, Pontinia, Aprilia, Bella Farnia, Sabaudia, Borgo Hermada, San Felice al Circeo, Terracina, and Fondi, transforming many former farm sheds into vibrant centres of worship, social gatherings, and political discussions. In 2018, it was estimated that around 11,000 Sikhs lived in the Pontine Plain, potentially more than twice as high. This Sikh community is considered the second largest in Europe. Drawing on research by C. Pallini for the EU-funded project Modscapes and ongoing work by D. Bose for his MA thesis, this paper delves into the settlement patterns of the Sikhs, positing that their settlement could prove to be an asset for the future

Based on project-oriented research, which materialised for the International Workshop Cosmopolitan Alexandria: What Future for its Heritage?*, the paper emphasises some distinguishing features of this ever-changing city, highlighting the great potential of Alexandria as a testing ground for architectural design. Alexandria epitomises a long history of construction and reconstruction, of both the urban form and its corresponding townscape. The Arab Town embedded the Hellenistic layout. The ancient metropolis together with the Arab and Turkish towns became quarries of building materials for the fast-paced development of the 19th-century colonial bridgehead. This process of creative destruction repositioned many vestiges of the past, some of which can still be identified, yet incorporated into new built-up forms. This text was conceived and discussed jointly by the authors. However, Luisa Ferro focused her research on Hellenistic Alexandria, whereas Cristina Pallini concentrated her studies on the development of the city since the early-19th-century city

The Smouha City Venture is a collaborative work between Richard Smouha, Cristina Pallini and Marie-Cécile Bruwier. Together they explore various aspects in the creation, development and urbanization of Smouha City, a suburb of Alexandria in Egypt. The book intertwines antiquity, historical and recent architectural discoveries and first-hand accounts of the events proceeding, during and following the birth of Smouha City. Along with the detailed text, the book provides the reader with a variety of visuals, which paint a vivid picture of the societal and architectural makeup of Alexandria during the first half of the 20th century

The essay retraces Alessandro Christofellis' twenty-years teaching activity at the Faculty of Architecture of Politecnico di Milano, reconstructing the lines of work subsequently adopted to educate students in formal prefiguration, that is, themes and methods of figurative research. This was a teaching method in continuous evolution, aimed at overcoming the purely analytical approach to design, as well as its deduction from the study of the city, of which an educated “formal reinterpretation” was instead encouraged. Some key notions recur: such as the "basic lexicon" or the notion of "estrangement", as theorised for literature and cinema by the Russian formalists. By encouraging students to identify with the work of an architect (almost as suggested), the theme of the "citizenship of the classic" becomes a common ground for reflection
