Nora, Quartiere Occidentale: una residenza con stibadium nell'area C2?
The paper presents the outcomes of the University of Genoa’s recent archaeological investigation campaigns in the C2 area (Western Quarter). Within this area, ongoing excavations are uncovering the remnants of a structured residential complex built upon pre-existing foundations from the imperial era. The currently revealed phase dates back to the IV and the early V century AD. Adjacent to the residential structures, and potentially interconnected with them, is an elongated room of relatively substantial dimensions, with one of its short sides terminating in an apse.
The positioning of this room, along with specific details of its interior arrangement, suggests its probable use as a banqueting hall. Its presence not only accentuates the significance of the structure but also plays a crucial role in characterizing this specific part of the city during the Late Antique period
Ritessere e raccontare. Riflessioni sulla comunicazione dell’archeologia
Communication plays a pivotal role in restoring cultural heritage to the communities it rightfully belongs to. By sharing its meaning and potential, heritage can regain significance in the present, contributing not only to the construction or reconstruction of awareness and historical perspective but also making tangible contributions to local economies.
In Italy, cultural consumption, which was already at relatively low levels before the COVID-19 pandemic, experienced a significant decline during the health emergency. Although there is a slight recovery today, economic uncertainty and challenging international political situations may hinder further growth. In this context, the role of cultural heritage professionals becomes crucial as they navigate the delicate mediation between cultural heritage and communities.
The communication of cultural heritage can significantly benefit from the widespread use of information technologies. However, intriguing applications can also be found in the revitalization and reinterpretation of traditional communication systems. In the realm of communication within museums and archaeological parks, there are rich experiences and extensive bibliographies continuously being updated. The situation is more challenging when it comes to communication on archaeological sites, demanding further reflection and consideration
Usi e riusi delle ceramiche: dalle tracce ai modelli comportamentali
The paper examines the primary and secondary uses of ceramics in archaeological contexts, focusing on surface traces to reconstruct behavioral patterns associated with their use, reuse, and recycling. At the core of this research is the SHERDs Project, which adopts a multidisciplinary approach to analyze material culture in the Hellenistic and Roman Mediterranean. Case studies from Pompeii and Nora provide a comparative framework, shedding light on domestic waste management, repair techniques, and the functional transformation of ceramic objects. The research combines traditional archaeological methods with advanced bioarchaeological and archaeometric analyses to document and interpret use traces, such as burn marks, tool impressions, and material residues. This integrated methodology offers a deeper understanding of the economic, cultural, and social practices of ancient communities and provides valuable insights for interpreting complex archaeological assemblages across diverse chronological and geographical contexts
Strumenti da lavoro, macchine e apprestamenti funzionali negli impianti per la produzione di anfore dell'Italia romana
I mortaria romani di origine centro-italica: tipologia e cronologia delle produzioni
Mortaria were commonly used in Roman cooking in the period between the first and third centuries BC. The analysis of the morphology of mortaria, supported by the observation of the fabrics and the stylistic aspect of the stamps, allows one to recognize a fairly homogeneous group which, despite having a wide diffusion, is particularly frequent in the centre-Italic contexts.
The beginning of the most successful period for the centre-Italic mortaria during the first half of the first century AD is marked by the adoption of the Dramont D2 type. Even in the significant morphological homogeneity, it is possible to identify some variants among the mortaria of the Dramont D2 type that in part likely reflect a change in taste and, in part, are probably related to the different creative processes adopted in the multiple production plants.
The text starts from recognising 5 variants that allow to specify and integrate the commonly-used framework of morphological evolution of such tools. The identified variants are then correlated with the epigraphic data coming from the stamps. In light of this analysis, it is possible to formulate some hypotheses regarding the definition of the internal chronology of some productions, the identification of the manufacturing environment of some people, and the chronology and production of some anepigraphic stamps
Nora, Quartiere Occidentale: campagne 2017-2019 nell'Area C2
This paper presents the preliminary results of the archaeological research 2017/2019 carried out by the University of Genoa in Nora (Pula, CA), in the Western Quarter, Area C.
In this area, excavations have brought to light a rather complex stratigraphic situation, in which six different phases of life and transformation have been recognized, framed in the period between the end of the III and the beginning of the VII century AD
Pompei: indagini archeologiche nelle botteghe della regio VII. Campagna 2016 (VII, 14, 1-3)
