This is just an example of the spatial analysis that can be made with historical maps, which are rich in information and full of important details that can be studied one by one. In this article we have examined the urban changes and the water distribution inside the ancient wall of Rome, using the maps of the XVIth, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. Not confining ourselves to the most famous maps such as the work of E. Du Perac, A. Tempesta, G. Maggi and G.B. Falda, we also analyzed those less well-known, but yet useful for achieving our purpose

No full textDall’evoluzione della medicina alle finalità e agli strumenti della geografia medica, dai fattori ambientali che concorrono all’insorgere di certe malattie alle diete e agli squilibri alimentari, dagli indicatori di sottosviluppo alle cause di morte e ai fattori di rischio in Italia, fino ad alcune riflessioni sui futuri scenari della geografia medica, che può – anch’essa – beneficiare delle potenzialità dei GIS. Sono queste le principali tematiche affrontate nel presente volume, che cerca di coniugare gli aspetti concettuali e metodologici con quelli analitico-quantitativi, con l’obiettivo di far riflettere, nell’ottica di una geografia moderna e di supporto alla pianificazione, su questioni riguardanti: le strutture e le politiche sanitarie; i rapporti tra ecosistemi ed ecumeni; le fonti inquinanti e gli stili di vita nocivi per la salute; la qualità della vita; le difformità riscontrabili a varia scala; la necessità di definire e avviare linee programmatiche di intervento modulate a seconda delle diverse realtà. L'apparato grafico e cartografico agevola la lettura critica e combinata dei dati – contestualizzati all’interno dell’ambito territoriale di riferimento – e favorisce i confronti spazio-temporali, dando risalto ai nessi di causa-effetto e fornendo valore aggiunto alle analisi.This volume, in the first part, provides a synthesis of the progresses and evolution of medicine and medical geography, focussing the attention on the relationship between different environments and diseases and providing a synthesis of the most important statistical data, indices and GIS elaboration which can be used for applicative studies. In the second part, the volume provides applicative analysis of the economic, social and dietary unbalances recorded in the different Countries of the world and provides a detailed analysis of the main causes of death in Italy, focussing the attention on particular case studies. This research, which combines methodological and applicative aspects, is characterised by many maps and other elaborations which have been built ad hoc in order to show the potentialities of modern geography in an interdisciplinary key, for the strategic planning and for the social utility

No full textL’articolo presenta la specificità e l’attualità dell’antropologia medica nel panorama dei saperi legati alla prevenzione, la gestione e la tutela della salute, per come essa interagisce e collabora con le istituzioni sanitarie dei Paesi industriali avanzati. Sulla base della natura complessa – organica, psichica e sociale – dei fenomeni di salute e malattia, mostra la centralità della dimensione culturale e sociale nell’affrontare tali fenomeni, sottolinea la centralità della comunicazione e della relazione terapeutica, illustra i molteplici piani su cui si articola l’efficacia. Infine, alla luce di recenti esperienze d’indagine, elenca diversi ambiti in cui l’antropologia medica può contribuire a impostare, orientare e migliorare i servizi sanitari.The article presents the specific and timely role of medical anthropology in the panorama of knowledge related to the prevention, management and protection of health, showing how it can interact and collaborate with health care institutions in the advanced industrial countries. Based on the complex - organic, psychological and social - nature of phenomena concerning health and disease, it shows the centrality of the cultural and social dimension in addressing these phenomena, it emphasizes the centrality of communication and therapeutic relationship, it illustrates the multiple levels on which effectiveness works. Finally, taking into account some recent fieldwork experiences, it lists several areas where medical anthropology can help to set, guide and improve health services
