    The Morals of Economic Internationalism

    No full text
    J. A. Hobson's "The Morals of Economic Internationalism" dissects the contrasting moral standards applied to individuals, corporations, and nations, presenting a critical moral choice for the post-World War global economy. Hobson highlights that the accepted standard of national conduct, based on the maxim "salus reipublicæ suprema lex" (the safety of the state is the supreme law), is a slighter standard than that governing individual morality. He refutes the common, false image of international trade as a rivalrous, zero-sum struggle for a limited market, arguing instead that trade is an exchange of goods that is indefinitely expansible and a form of global coöperation. Hobson focuses on America's unique position amid the widespread economic ruin and famine in post-war Europe. As the only civilised country that is virtually self-sufficient, America has the freedom to contract its relations with the rest of the world and retreat into isolation. However, Hobson contends that this isolationist policy is at odds with a larger moral imperative and intelligent self-interest. He places the responsibility squarely upon America and Britain to use their superior economic resources (food, materials, credit) for the immediate work of salvage and for permanent economic coöperation. Otherwise, a return to close economic nationalism will inevitably lead to international strife and financial strangulation of weaker nations, imperilling the future of Western civilisation.J. A. Hobson’ın “The Morals of Economic Internationalism” eseri, bireyler, şirketler ve uluslar arasındaki ahlaki standartların karşıtlığını inceleyerek, Birinci Dünya Savaşı sonrası küresel ekonominin geleceği hakkında kritik bir ahlaki seçim ortaya koyuyor.

Bringing Mentoring ONSIDE:Averting Judgementoring and Enhancing the Professional Learning, Development, and Well-Being of Teachers

    No full text
The author of this chapter coined the term judgementoring (Hobson, 2016; Hobson& Malderez, 2013), which is a process in which a mentor has an evaluative role overthe mentee and/or overly directive approach to mentoring that harms the mentor/mentee relationship. In an effort to diminish unhealthy mentor/mentee relationships caused by judgementoring, the author devised the ONSIDE Mentoring framework, implemented it in schools, collected data, and analyzed the data, which demonstrated benefits for mentor, mentee, and students alike

Efficient calibration of a new Hobson-Rogers model

This thesis comprehends a detailed study of complete stochastic volatility models in the spirit of Hobson and Rogers. Typically, in these models, the instantaneous volatility is defined in terms of cumulative log returns on past investments in the asset. A necessity in view of option pricing is that the asset price process can model all features of volatility surfaces.lIt appears that neither existing Hobson-Rogers models nor an extended version can full this requirement. This gives rise to develop a new model specification, contained in the Hobson-Rogers class. The second order weak approximation scheme of Ninomiya-Victoir combined with Quasi Monte Carlo integration leads to an efficient option pricing method. For the most part this can be attributed to the fact that the ordinary differential equations in the Ninomiya-Victoir scheme of the new model have closed-form solutions. The proposed model can explain actual option data better than former models, as is demonstrated by several maturity slices for European options on the S&P500.Applied MathematicsDelft Institute of Applied MathematicsElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Three-dimensional spatial coordinates of individual plankton determined using underwater hologrammetry

    No full text
We report the use of a nondestructive metrological technique, hologrammetry, that affords greater scope and higher accuracy for the enumeration, sizing, and spatial distribution of particles. Results are presented on imaging of three living planktonic protists suspended in water using in-line pulsed-laser holography. We demonstrate that a volume of 2,400 ml of water, at 750 mm depth, can be analysed with a resolution everywhere better than 20 µm. High quality images and accurate spatial coordinates of living plankton in subvolumes have been obtained

    Hobson-Jobson:The East India Company lexicon

    No full text
Henry Yule and A.C. Burnell’s Hobson-Jobson: A Glossary of Colloquial Anglo-Indian Words and Phrases (1886) offers a richly nuanced history of the East India Company. This article argues that the lexicon shows the influence of comparative philology, particularly the work of Friedrich Max Müller. Compiled at the same time as the India Office archives were first catalogued, Hobson-Jobson engages with the primary sources of Company history. The article examines both the impact of Asian words and goods on Britain, and the cultural and trading connections between colonies. Through a series of close readings, the article demonstrates that Hobson-Jobson offers fresh ways to approach the global networks of Company trade, and personal networks of affiliation. © 2017, Wiley. A holographic system for subsea recording and analysis of plankton and other marine particles (HOLOMAR)

    No full text
We report here details of the design, development, initial testing and field-deployment of the HOLOMAR system for in-situ subsea holography and analysis of marine plankton and nonliving particles. HOLOMAR comprises a submersible holographic camera ("HoloCam") able to record in-line and off-axis holograms at depths down to 100 m, together with specialised reconstruction hardware ("HoloScan") linked to custom image processing and classification software. The HoloCam consists of a laser and power supply, holographic recording optics and holographic plate holders, a water-tight housing and a support frame. It utilises two basic holographic geometries, in-line and off-axis such that a wide range of species, sizes and concentrations can be recorded. After holograms have been recorded and processed they are reconstructed in full three-dimensional detail in air in a dedicated replay facility. A computer-controlled microscope, using video cameras to record the image at a given depth, is used to digitise the scene. Specially written software extracts a binarised image of an object in its true focal plane and is classified using a neural network. The HoloCam was deployed on two separate cruises in a Scottish sea loch (Loch Etive) to a depth of 100 m and over 300 holograms were recorded
