Idealism and Objectivity: Understanding Fichte's Jena Project

    No full text
The theoretical writings from Johann Gottlieb Fichte?s short tenure at Jena (1794-99) are among the most difficult and influential works of classical German philosophy. Fichte?s appropriation of Kant?s transcendental project not only established the framework for the subsequent idealist tradition (Schelling, Hlderlin, Hegel), but also introduced philosophical themes and strategies that would dominate the Continental tradition well into the twentieth century. This book offers a new interpretation of Fichte?s Jena system, focusing in particular on the problem of the objectivity of consciousness. The Jena system, the author argues, set out to develop an account of the constitutive structures of subjectivity in virtue of which conscious states have objective content. It is in the context of this project that Fichte?s central philosophical innovations must be understood: his account of the acts of ?self-positing? and ?opposing?; his attack on the thing in itself; the development of a dialectical strategy in transcendental inquiry; and his bold assertion of the ?primacy of practice.? Fichte?s investigations of objectivity find their center of gravity, it is argued, in two powerful insights. First, the theory of objectivity must be idealistic rather than naturalistic or ?dogmatic.? That is, it must transcend the conception of human beings as simply complex mechanisms determined by their causal transactions with the world. Second, the theory of objectivity must find its basis in an account of the practical character of human beings?our character as agents, comporting ourselves teleogically in a world in which we find resistance. The account of Fichte?s Jena project developed here demonstrates that Fichte?s thought is of far more than antiquarian interest. In its attempt to explore the limits of naturalistic accounts of human subjectivity and its articulation of the practical foundations of human representational capacities, Fichte?s Jena project is of direct relevance to contemporary debates in both analytic and continental philosophy

Indian Handicrafts in Globalization Times: An analysis of Global-Local Dynamics

    No full text
Globalization - which refers to the growing integration of societies, economies and cultures around the world, has become one of the most hotly-debated topics and key area of research among the policy makers, statesmen, corporate, politicians and academia respectively over the past few years. As India opens up her doors to the multinationals during the era of economic reform and liberalized market, putting an end to the 'license raj', it is not only the economies that often meet in the global market sphere, but also the people and cultures, which bring a new dimension to the multi-cultural setting. What we can see in present day modern world is that there is always a cross-cultural interaction between the 'local' and 'global' and the much discussed 'global village', is now not just a possibility but a reality despite many contradictions. Talking about Indian Handicrafts, which constitutes a significant segment of the decentralized sector of the economy, its export has reached at a commendable height. Indian folk art and crafts which are the integral parts of the Indian culture and tradition, are in high demand among the western consumers. Again, foreign fashion industry borrows a great deal from Indian appliquéd motifs Saree designs, an ethnic Indian wear. Needless to say, the borders between the world cultures are now eroding out and becoming irrelevant, therefore prompting to call it as a deterritorialized world. But notwithstanding, the real concern for many of us is that, can the 'local' really meet with the 'global' by truly sustaining its localness? The biggest problem in the Indian Handicraft industry is that the village craftsmen remain concerned that with free trade and mass production, hand-made products from other parts of the world will out price the products of their hard labour. So the basic question arises, is globalization a panacea for every human problems that the mother earth is facing now? With a brief theoretical understanding, this paper looks at globalization's increasing impact on Indian handicrafts and crafts persons. It tries to assess how far globalization serves as an opportunity and threat to the artisans. The role of the government in promoting the crafts and protecting the artists will also be discussed before concluding the paper.globalization, handicraft, global, local, glocal

In the end 17th and 18th centuries prominent professors such as mathematician Erhard Weigel, historian Johann Andreas Bose, physician Werner Rolfinck, historian Friedrich Schiller, philosophers Johann Gottlieb Fichte, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel conducted research or taught here. Since the 19th century, the University has cooperated with the Zeiss company manufacturing optical equipment. The author also discussed the collections of the Collegium Jenense and generally of the University

    Hölderlin in Jena

    No full text
Guided by the question about the reasons that lead Friedrich Hölderlin, poet and thinker, to show, during his youth, a special attraction toward the city of Jena, where he stayed during a short period of time, during 1794 to 1795 winter semester, the author examines and analyses the influence of Kant’s thought and Schiller’s literary and philosophical production, as well as the Greek texts he read at the time –particularly Plato–, over the young poet. The analysis is focused specially on the way in which the interpretation of Kant’s thought, which Hölderlin had learned in the seminar in Tübingen, combined with the nostalgic perspective of Schiller’s early writings, mediated Hölderlin’s reception of the Greeks

    LERMONTOV’S ROMANTICISM AND JENA SCHOOL

    No full text
This article examines the understudied subjects of Lermontov life and work: his stay at the Moscow noble boarding school and his direct engagement in Cepheus, a literary annual run by the literary circle of Raich, where Lermontov’s first work, “Thoughts, Extracts, and Reflections…” was published. The author proves the authorship of Lermontov’s “Thoughts…” that was included in the sixth volume of the academic edition of his works under the category of “Dubia” but excluded from many later editions. Close reading of “Thoughts...” and a comparative study of selected fragments with Lermontov’s letters to M.A. Shan-Girey demonstrate that even this early essay drawing ontological differences between the principles of classicism and Romanticism bears the imprint of the Early Romantic aesthetics. The analysis reveals typological similarities between “Thoughts…” and the ideas of Jena school that were most fully manifested in the writings of Schlegel brothers thoroughly studied in the literary circle of Raich. In a section devoted to aesthetic views of S.E. Raich, the author disagrees with those researchers who consider him to be either archaist or classicist and claims that he was an adept of Jena school rather than a “neopetrarchist.” Ideas discussed in the circle and during the lectures influenced Lermontov as his future work testifies. Within the period of 1829–1831, he published a Byronic poem “June 11, 1831,” on the one hand, and a poem “Angel” that echoes the ideas of Wackenroder, on the other hand. If for Raich, a combination of these two conflicting Romantic schools was inconceivable, for young Lermontov, it was a natural outcome of his apprenticeship period since each school offered him the means to understand the essence of Romantic method as such

"Saved!" by Jena Malone: An introspective study of a consumer's fan relationship with a film actress

    No full text
While consumers have always been fascinated by the works and private lives of celebrities, some consumers experience a significantly more intensive level of admiration for a particular celebrity and, subsequently, become what are commonly known as fans. However, scant attention has been paid to how the relationship between fans and celebrities expresses itself in everyday consumer behavior. Thus, in order to explore celebrity fandom as a holistic lived experience from a fan's insider perspective, the lead author uses subjective personal introspection to provide insights into his private fan relationship with the actress Jena Malone. Drawing on narrative transportation theory, the study finds that a consumer's fan experiences may derive from one's personal engagement with the celebrity's artistic work and public persona. The latter is essentially the consumer's private intertextual reading of what s/he perceives to be relevant and ‘reliable’ media texts, which can result in a feeling of ‘knowing’ the celebrity like a personal friend — or even of ‘love’
