Koncepcja narodu Anthony’ego D. Smitha. Kontrowersje wokół definicji

    No full text
This paper focuses on the category of the nation introduced by Anthony David Smith. The author attempts to answer the following questions: what does actually constitute a nation, what is the origin of a nation, and how does a nation exist. The main point of this paper is the evolution of the Smith’s definition of the nation, which has already been debated. The analysis presented here aims to show that the changes introduced by Smith to the definition of the nation actually helped clarify this definition, while the basic definition of the nation remained a consistent and interesting concept for different theories of the nation, and in particular those coming from political sciences. In addition, this paper presents some major ideas of that British scientist and the main research schools studying the subject. This paper mainly focuses on the analysis of the changes introduced by Montserrat Guibernau, a sociologist from the University of Cambridge, and attempts to explain motivations which drove Smith to introduce changes to his definition. So far, none of the scientists exploring the British scientific thought has attempted to show how Smith’s idea of the nation could be useful for Christian social teaching. Therefore, this paper includes some recommendations, which may be helpful for researchers interested in the field of the theory of nation. The ethnosymbolic concept of the nation, as defined by Smith, seems to correspond also with the concept of the nation that is characteristic of the Polish school of humanism. But while it is briefly mentioned in this paper, this problem is not explored in depth, as a possible subject of future research.

Ob prevodu dela Adama Smitha Bogastvo narodov

Avtor posega v razprave ob izdaji slovenskega prevoda Bogastva narodov Adama Smitha. The author of this article intervenes into discussions initiated by the Slovene translation of Adam Smith\u27s The Wealth of Nations. He argues for such an interpretation of Smith\u27s work that distinguishes those aspects that have been confirmed by the subsequent development of capitalist economies and economic theory from those that have proved to be incorrect either from the viewpoint of subsequent historical development and the development of political economy. He concludes that Smith\u27s legacy should not bear the burden of one-sided and uncritical appropriations of its weak points by neoclassical economics. What is needed, rather, is to base oneself on those authors that have developed the positive points of Smith\u27s legacy

Smitha, Matt W., The Effect of Self Administered Workers’ Compensation on Employee Safety Programs. Master of Public Health, December 1997, 72 pp., three tables, seven figures, reference list, 28 titles. In Texas nonsubscribers to workers’ compensation have been under ongoing attack as powerful interest groups such as casualty insurance carriers have lobbied for an end to the elective system. Seventy-two nonsubscribing Texas companies were surveyed. Logistic regression with an alpha level of p=0.05 found the safety program qualitative score, Wald (1)=10.1992, p=0.0014 to be a significant predictor of increased management attention to safety while the other variables of total losses, frequency rate, and severity rate together in the same model were found to not be significant predictors of the same dependent response. Eighty-one percent of organizations surveyed reported that management attention to safety had increased after the company became a nonsubscriber

“Hemostat forceps” a simple and useful adjuvant to clip applicator forceps for clipping saccular cerebral aneurysms – Technical note

    No full text
AbstractDespite technical and technological advances in Neurosurgery, in the last four decades, there has been no significant reduction, in the dimensions of the, aneurysm clip applicator forceps. This can be challenging, even to the most experienced neurovascular surgeon, especially when the surgical corridor created remains narrow, despite all possible measures to widen it. The author describes one such situation, where an anterior communicating artery aneurysm was clipped successfully using a simple “hemostat” forceps. The author describes the advantages and disadvantages of a hemostat forceps, when used as a clip applicator. He also explains how a “custom made” hemostat forceps, can overcome these pitfalls. The author concludes that, though a standard clip applicator forceps is the instrument of choice, to clip aneurysms, a “custom made” set of hemostat forceps can prove superior to conventional clip applicators, in select situations, where the surgical corridor is too narrow and the relatively large dimensions of the clip applicator itself, obliterates visibility of the local anatomy

Abstract. In the present study, bacterial strains were isolated from the soils of Wayanad District, Kerala, India and the isolates were tested for their tolerance to endosulfan and potential in bioremediation technology. Pesticide contamination in the soils, soil physico-chemical characteristics and socio-economic impacts of pesticide application were also analyzed. 28 pesticide compounds in the soil samples were analyzed and the results revealed that there was no pesticide residues in the soils. As per the survey conducted the pesticide application is very high in the study area and the level of awareness among the farmers was very poor regarding the method of application and its socio-economic and ecological impacts. A total of 9 bacterial strains were isolated with 50µg/ml of endosulfan in the isolating media and the results showed that most of the bacterial strains were highly resistance to endosulfan. Out of the 9 strains isolated 6 were highly resistant to endosulfan (500-700µg/ml) and the other 3 isolates showed the resistance of 250-500µg/ml. From the studied isolate, isolate 9 demonstrating prolific growth and high resistance was selected to check their capability to degrade endosulfan over time. Identification of the selected strain reveals that it belongs to the genus Bacillus. Results of endosulfan removal studies showed that with increase in time, the biomass of the bacterial strains increased. The complete disappearance of endosulfan from the spiked and inoculated broth during the first day of incubation (24 hour interval) was observed. While the control flask showed the presence of endosulfan during the experimental period. Pesticide resistant bacteria are widely distributed in the soils of selected study area and the tolerance varied between bacteria even though they were isolated 1 School of Environmental Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, India.
