No full textThe 27-dimensional Hopf algebra A(F), defined by the exact sequence of quantum groups A(SL(2,C)) −→ A(SLq(2)) −→ A(F), q = e 3 , is studied as a finite quantum group symmetry of the matrix algebra M (3, C), describing the color sector of Alain Connes’ formulation of the Standard Model. The duality with the Hopf algebra H, investigated in a recent work by Robert Coquereaux, is established and used to define a representation of H on M(3,C) and two commuting representations of H on A(F)
In the "Old Country": Memories to Pass On
No full textThe paper relates the findings of an oral history project on the Italian immigration to Fredonia, a small town in Western New York, carried out by the author, and argues in favor of the use of digital audio-visual technology as opposed to the more traditional audio-recording approach in oral history research. The author sets out to show how in fact the use of digital video enabled the surfacing of a performative element in the interviewees which underlines their determined effort to ennoble the stories of the immigrants’ original departure from the fatherland and their early settlement in the States. The essay also comments on the possibility of digitally archiving the recordings so as to allow for a continuous verification of the accuracy of the original written transcriptions, something that the more traditional analogue techniques did not easily enable

Getting to Know the Aretines
No full textThe chapter is part of a volume designed to assist study abroad students, and foreigners in general, in experiencing the province of Arezzo to its full potential. It opens with a survey of the descriptions of Arezzo and its culture offered by foreign writers who visited the city in the period of the Grand Tour and beyond. This is followed by highlights of a few of the major customs of the Aretines, and how these may be tackled by visitors who are planning to spend a prolonged amount of time in the city. Among these are the afternoon stroll on the Corso, the tendency to aggregate in groups among the young, the absence of residential universities, and the importance of “campanilismo”.
In describing these cultural traits special emphasis is given to the local student population and young adults in general, so as to foster international comparisons and connections. Within this process issues of intercultural communication and cultural identity are discussed
