No full textIn general, the project study has provided the author a vast experience especially during the brainstorming stage where different problems occurred during the performance testing. The author was very glad to the previous theoretical lectures of Dr, Maglaya who was also my former professor in the subjects Advance Refrigeration and Air-conditioning during my undergraduate and graduate class in the De La Salle University. Thru his teachings and guidance, The author was able to apply the theoretical knowledge the author has learned in combating actual job problems experienced in the company. The project was very challenging because of the swift output during the testing and then making the necessary adjustments in order to attain the desired results. In addition, this project is a pioneer project of Chee Puck Refrigeration Inc that gave me a lot of pressure but the author is honored to have the privilege in embarking this task. The major concentration of the project study was to design, fabricate, and conduct a performance testing of stationary freezer using R-404A, a non-CFC refrigerant.
The results of the performance testing shows that the evaporating temperature of negative twenty degree Celsius (–20C) within 25 minutes were reach, which is the main requirements set by Jollibee Foods Corporation to Chee Puck Refrigeration Inc. In addition, the unit case was also subjected to severe physical testing by opening and closing the door with significant pressure on the boundaries of normal usage in order to test the physical toughness of the unit. Results show that the design and fabrication was very tough and formidable because it withstood significant pressures applied to unit case

Poly(methyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid): Physico-chemical characterization and targeted dye sensitized solar cell application
No full textA random poly(methyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate-co-acrylic acid) [P(MMA-co-BA-co-AA)] was synthesized via emulsion polymerization utilizing thermally-activated persulfate radicals. The successful synthesis of high molecular weight copolymer at high monomer conversion rate was confirmed by NMR study. Various techniques were employed to characterize the structure, electrical and thermal properties of copolymer. The removal of unreacted monomers from the end product by casting technique was rationalized from the disappearance of C=C FTIR characteristic peak in the cast film. The drying of the emulsion above the glass transition temperature (Tg = 24 °C) yields an amorphous film with smooth surface morphology. The suitability of the formed continuous film as a base polymer for iodide-based electrolytes in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) fabrication was investigated. The polymeric solid state electrolytes (PSSE) were formulated by varying the doping concentrations of sodium iodide (NaI) in fixed ratio of iodine (I2) and mixtures of ethylene carbonate: propylene carbonate (EC:PC, 1:1). The DSSC fabricated using PSSE with 15 wt.% NaI showed the highest solar-to-electrical energy conversion efficiency (η) of 3.22% under 100 mW cm−2 sunlight intensity. A brief structured education programme enhances self-care practices and improves glycaemic control in Malaysians with poorly controlled diabetes
No full textWe assessed the effectiveness of a brief structured diabetes education programme based on the concept of self-efficacy on self-care and glycaemic control using single-blind study design. One hundred and sixty-four participants with poorly controlled diabetes from two settings were randomized using computer-generated list into control (n = 82) and intervention (n = 82) groups, of which 151 completed the study. Monthly interventions over 12 weeks addressed the self-care practices of diet, physical activity, medication adherence and self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG). These self-care practices were assessed at Weeks 0 and 12 using pre- and post-questionnaires in both groups together with glycated haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and diabetes knowledge. In the intention-to-treat analysis (n = 164), the intervention group improved their SMBG (P = <0.001), physical activity (P = 0.001), HbA1c (P = 0.03), diabetes knowledge (P = <0.001) and medication adherence. At Week 12, HbA1c difference adjusted for SMBG frequency, medication adherence and weight change remained significant (P = 0.03) compared with control group. For within group comparisons, diabetes knowledge (P = <0.001), HbA1c level (P = <0.001), SMBG (P = <0.001) and medication adherence (P = 0.008) improved from baseline in the intervention group. Effects of tuberculosis and HIV infection on whole-body protein metabolism during feeding, measured by the [15N]glycine method
No full textBackground: Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV infection are wasting diseases that frequently occur together and have severe consequences on nutritional status.Objective: The objective was to determine the effects of TB and HIV, separately and together, on protein metabolism.Design: Protein metabolism was determined in the fed state in 11 healthy control subjects, in 10 patients with HIV infection without TB or other active infection (HIV group), in 10 patients with active TB without HIV infection (TB group), and in 8 patients with HIV infection and active TB (HIVTB group) with the use of oral [15N]glycine and measurement of enrichment in urinary urea and ammonia.Results: Whole-body protein flux and degradation were lower in the HIV group than in the control group (mean flux: 3.53 ± 0.40 compared with 4.75 ± 0.97 g · kg lean body mass-1 · 12 h-1; P = 0.002). Protein flux, synthesis, and degradation were not significantly different between the control group and the TB and HIVTB groups. Net protein balance was strongly anabolic in the control, HIV, and TB groups but was neutral in the HIVTB group (P < 0.001 for comparison between groups).Conclusions: HIV infection was associated with a significant down-regulation of whole-body protein flux. TB alone was not associated with abnormal protein metabolism, but net anabolism in the fed state was impaired in the HIVTB group
