The power supply system for the ATLAS pixel detector
The innermost part of the ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus) experiment at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), CERN (Conseil Eurpeenne pour la Recherche Nucleaire), will be a pixel detector, which is presently under construction. To operate the approx. 1700 detector modules and their related readout electronics a sophisticated power supply system is required. Its design constraints are the high power density and the sensitivity of the read out chips developed in deep sub-micron technology. A high granularity of the system is desired to allow individual adjustment and to minimize the number of elements out of service. We describe the layout of the full power supply system and concentrate on the components designed in-house: the supply system for the optical link, which offers the possibility of handling a high number of channels at a reasonable price and the remotely-programmable regulator stations, which protect the sensitive front end electronics
Limits on dark energy–matter interaction from the Hubble relation for two-fluid FLRW models
In the standard model (, ) it is assumed that there is no convertion (energy transfer) between the two components. However, this hypothesis requires observational tests. A general approach to multicomponent FLRW models comes from a new classification
(Gromov et al. [CITE])
which naturally follows from two independent model properties: 1) stationarity (or not) of equations of state of component substances and the presence (or absence) of energy transfer between these. The associated one-fluid model becomes characterized by .
For the case (which for a stationary equation state of dark energy means coherent evolution and is caused by energy transfer), a general integral expression for the analogue of the Mattig equation is derived. For flat geometry, the integral reduces to a simple analytic expression.
Comparison with the magnitude-redshift relation for the standard model shows that gives the same relation within 0.05 mag in the range .
The observable γ gives a robust upper limit to w in the equation of state of dark energy
Early Outcomes of Real-World Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Replacement
Angellotti D, Mattig I, Samim D, et al. Early Outcomes of Real-World Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Replacement. JACC Cardiovascular Interventions . 2025.BACKGROUND: Transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR) has been recently approved for the treatment of patients with severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR). Real-world evidence regarding the commercial use of TTVR is lacking.; OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the real-world safety and efficacy of the EVOQUE TTVR system in patients with severe TR treated at 12 experienced heart valve centers in 5 European countries.; METHODS: Consecutive patients treated with the EVOQUE system since approval in Europe (October 2023 to February 2025) were included in this retrospective analysis. Clinical outcomes were assessed at 30-day follow-up.; RESULTS: The study included 176 patients (mean age 77.8 years, 72.0% women, median TRI-SCORE 5 points [IQR: 2 points]). At a median follow-up time of 30 days (IQR: 2 days), severe or greater TR was reduced to mild or none in 126 of 128 patients (98.4%; P < 0.001). NYHA functional class improved from 20.2% (28 of 138) class I or II at baseline to 79.7% (110 of 138; P) at 1 month (P < 0.001), with signs of improved hepatorenal function (estimated glomerular filtration rate 47.0 ± 19.9 mL/min/1.73 m2 vs 53.7 ± 23.3 mL/min/1.73 m2 [P < 0.001]; bilirubin 14.2 ± 8.8 mumol/L vs 11.0 ± 9.8 mumol/L [P < 0.001]). Massive or torrential TR at baseline was more common among patients who improved compared with those with stable or worsening NYHA functional class (75 of 98 [76.5%] vs 20 of 40 [50.0%]; P = 0.004). Permanent pacemaker implantation was required in 21 of 111 pacemaker-naive patients (18.9%), in particular those with conduction disturbances at baseline (OR: 4.53; 95% CI: 1.73-11.82; P = 0.002). Moderate or severe right ventricular dysfunction was an independent predictor of clinical failure at 1-month follow-up (OR: 3.60; 95% CI: 1.39-9.32, P = 0.008).; CONCLUSIONS: TR elimination following TTVR in a real-world setting was associated with significant symptom and end-organ functional improvement. Patients with massive or torrential TR were more likely to experience functional improvement. Pre-existing conduction disturbances are associated with increased risk for pacemaker implantation, while baseline right ventricular dysfunction is a strong predictor of adverse clinical outcomes. Geo Engine: Workflow-backed Geo Data Portals
Geo data portals play a key role in the distribution and exploitation of domain-specific geo data. While such portals are highly specialized, they share a number of common requirements that span from data access and processing to UI components.Geo Engine is able to provide all the necessary parts for portal building. We demonstrate this on a real data portal we built for the Dragonfly community. In addition, we show its general architecture and outline future improvements
An Efficient Method for Exploratory Data Visualization of Big Spatial Data on Commodity Hardware
The exploratory and interactive visualization of big spatial data is becoming increasingly important in business, science, and many other application areas. In this paper, we discuss the Circle Merging Quadtree, an efficient method for aggregating and visualizing big spatial point data on commodity hardware
Rethinking Spatial Processing in Data-Intensive Science
In this paper we address the problem of supporting data-driven science in geo-scientific application domains where scientists need to filter, analyze, and correlate large data sets in an interactive manner. We identify ten fundamental requirements for such a new type of processing system. They span from supporting spatial data types over using workflows for data lineage, to fast and flexible computations for exploratory analysis. Our study of related work looks at a range of established systems of different domains and shows significant drawbacks with respect to our requirements. We propose the Visualization, Aggregation \& Transformation system (VAT) as an architecture to overcome current limitations. It bases on standard software and implements performance-relevant parts using state-of-the-art technology like GPU computing. Our first comparison with other systems shows the validity of our approach
La responsabilidad contractual en torno al artículo 1945 del Código Civil chileno (artículo 2003 Código Civil colombiano)
In this paper, Art. 1945 of the Chilean Civil Code (2003 of the Colombian Civil Code) is dogmatically analyzed to determine the function fulfilled by the notion of negligence in that provision, and the scope of the indemnification of damages and the causes of exoneration in the lease agreement, to end with an analysis on the option of remedies in light of said precept. Based on this research, it is concluded that fault must be understood as referring to the contractual breach of the obligations of the lessee. In the same way, it is discarded that guilt, understood as the reproach to the behaviour of the debtor, constitutes an element of contractual responsibility. Study of radiation damage and substrate resistivity effects from beam test of silicon microstrip detectors using LHC readout electronics
We present the beam test results of single-sided silicon microstrip detectors, with different substrate resistivities. The effects of radiation damage are studied for a detector irradiated to a fluence of 2.4 x 10(14) n/cm(2). The detectors are read out with the APV6 chip, which is compatible with the 40 MHz LHC clock, The performance of different detectors and readout modes are studied in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and efficiency.
