A comparison of Landau-Ginzburg models for odd-dimensional Quadrics
In [Rie08], the second author defined a Landau-Ginzburg model for homogeneous spaces G/P, as a regular function on an affine subvariety of the Langlands dual group. In this paper, we reformulate this LG model (X^, W_t) in the case of the odd-dimensional quadric, as a rational function on a Langlands dual projective space, in the spirit of work by R. Marsh and the second author for type A Grassmannians and by both authors for Lagrangian Grassmannians. We also compare this LG model with the one obtained independently by Gorbounov and Smirnov, and we use this comparison to deduce part of a conjecture of the second author for odd-dimensional quadrics
McKay correspondence for Landau-Ginzburg models
In this paper we prove an analogue of the McKay correspondence for Landau-Ginzburg models. Our proof is based on the ideas introduced by T. Bridgeland, A. King and M. Reid, which reformulate and generalize the McKay correspondence in the language of derived categories, along with the techniques introduced by J.-C. Chen
Some Inequalities for Functions of Bounded Variation with Applications to Landau Type Results
Some inequalities for functions of bounded variation that provide
reverses for the inequality between the integral mean and the p−norm for
p Є [1,∞] are established. Applications related to the celebrated Landau
inequality between the norms of the derivatives of a function are also pointed

Non-Fermi-liquid behavior and anomalous suppression of Landau damping in layered metals close to ferromagnetism
Financial support from the EPSRC (U.K.) under Grants No. EP/G03673X/1 (S. P. R.) and No. EP/I031014/1 (C. A. H.) is acknowledged. We analyze the low-energy physics of nearly ferromagnetic metals in two spatial dimensions using the functional renormalization group technique. We find a new low-energy fixed point, at which the fermionic (electronlike) excitations are non-Fermi-liquid (zƒ=13/10) and the magnetic fluctuations exhibit an anomalous Landau damping whose rate vanishes as Γq∼|q|3/5 in the low-|q| limit. We discuss this renormalization of the Landau-damping exponent, which is the major novel prediction of our work, and highlight the possible link between that renormalization and neutron-scattering data on UGe2 and related compounds. Implications of our analysis for YFe2Al10 are also discussed.Peer reviewe

Novel optical fibre distributed temperature sensor based on the Landau-Placzek ratio
We report our latest results on a compact, diode pumped optical fibre distributed temperature sensor based on Brillouin scattering. A high power, short pulse Q-switched Erbium/Ytterbium fibre laser and a double pass in-fibre Mach-Zehnder interferometer make this Brillouin distributed temperature sensor an attractive commercial device. A spatial and temperature resolution of 10 metres and + or - 1.7°C has been demonstrated
Modeling of weak anisotropic anchoring of nematic liquid crystals in the Landau-de Gennes theory
The anisotropic anchoring effect of a treated solid surface on a nematic liquid crystal is described in the Landau-de Gennes theory using a power expansion on the tensor-order parameter and two mutually orthogonal unit vectors. The expression has three degrees of freedom, allowing for independent assignment of polar and azimuthal anchoring strengths and a preferred value of the surface-order parameter. It is shown that in the limit for a uniaxial constant-order parameter, the expression simplifies to the anisotropic generalization of the Rapini-Papoular anchoring energy density proposed by Zhao et al. Experimentally measurable values with a physical meaning in the Oseen-Frank theory can be scaled and assigned to the scalar coefficients of the tensor-order-parameter expansion. Results of numerical experiments comparing the anchoring according to the study of Zhao et al. in the Oseen-Frank theory and the power expansion in the Landau-de Gennes theory are presented and shown to agree well
On a Cubic-Quintic Ginzburg-Landau Equation with Global Coupling
We study standing wave solutions in a
Ginzburg-Landau equation which consists of
a cubic-quintic equation stabilized by global coupling
A_t= \Delta A +\mu A + c A^3 -A^5 -k A
(\int_{R^n} A^2\,dx).
We classify the existence and stability of
all possible standing wave solutions
