Overview of the Track on Author Profiling and Deception Detection in Arabic

    No full text
[EN] This overview presents the Author Profiling and Deception Detection in Arabic (APDA) shared task at PAN@FIRE 2019. Two have been the main aims of this years task: i) to profile the age, gender and native language of a Twitter user; ii) to determine whether an Arabic text is deceptive or not in two different genres: Twitter and news headlines. For this purpose we have created three corpora in Arabic. Altogether, the approaches of 13 participants are evaluated. This publication was made possible by NPRP 9-175-1-033 from the Qatar National Research Fund (a member of Qatar Foundation). The findings achieved herein are solely the responsibility of the authors. Manuel Lorente Junquera. Arquitecto Restaurador

    No full text

    Total synthesis of (+)-polyoxin J

The antifungal antibiotic, polyoxin J 1, has been obtained (46.4%) by the coupling of a protected derivative of 5-O-carbamoylpolyoxamic acid 2 with thymine polyoxin C 3 which were prepared by a stereoselective aminohomologation strategy of sugar aldehydes (L-threose and dialdo-D-ribofuranose) employing nitrones 4 and 5 as their iminium derivatives and furan as a carboxylate group equivalent

Pathological (late) fractures of the mandibular angle after lower third molar removal. A case series.

    No full text
Introduction. Pathological (late) fracture of the mandibular angle after third molar (M3) surgery is very rare (0.005% of the M3 removed). The cases reported in literature are 111 and does not include those associated with osseous pathologies such as osteomyelitis or any local and systemic diseases that may compromise the mandibular bone strength. Cases Presentation. We describe three new cases. The first patient was a 27-old-year Caucasian man who was undergone to surgical removal of 3.8, mesioangular variety, class II - C, 20 days before the admission to our clinic. The fracture of the left mandibular angle, complete and composed, occurred during chewing. The second patient was a 32-old-year Caucasian man. He was undergone to surgical remove of 3.8, mesioangular variety, class II – B 22 days before the admission. The fracture, occurred during the mastication, was studied also by CT that showed a reparative tissue in the fracture site. The third patient was a 36-old-year Caucasian man who was undergone to surgical removal of 3.8 vertical variety, class II – C 25 days before the observation. Also in this case the fracture of the mandibular angle was oblique (unfavourable), complete and composed, occurred during chewing. We studied the fracture by OPT and CT. All the surgical removal of 3.8, performed by their own dentists with more than ten years of experience, were hard and difficult. We treated the fractures with open surgical reduction, internal fixation (IF) by miniplates and IMF (intermaxillary elastic fixation) removed after 6 weeks. Conclusions. The literature indicates that the risk of pathological (late) fracture of the mandibular angle after surgery of M3 is double for total inclusions (Class II-III, type C) due to necessity of ostectomies more generous than in the partial inclusions. Important factor is also the anatomy of the teeth and the features of the teeth roots. The predominance of these fractures occurs in subjects with more than 25 years. The highest incidence (67.8% of cases) is found in the second and third week post-surgery. We emphasize that before the M3 surgery it is extremely important to always provide adequate instructions to the patient in order to avoid early masticatory loads and prevent this event that, although rare, acn occurs

Stereoselective addition of 2-furyllithium and 2-thiazolyllithium to sugar nitrones. Synthesis of carbon-linked glycoglycines

    No full text
A route to epimeric carbon-linked glycoglycines that exploits the stereoselective addition of 2-lithiofuran and 2-lithiothiazole to sugar nitrones has been described. The reaction occurs with opposite diastereofacial selectivity depending on whether the free nitrone or the diethyl aluminum chloride precomplexed derivative is employed. The resulting furyl or thiazolyl hydroxylamines are dehydroxylated to amines by the action of titanium(III) chloride. From these compounds the amino acids are revealed by the oxidative cleavage of the furan ring or by the conversion of the thiazole into the formyl group and oxidation to carboxylic acid. Compounds have been prepared wherein the α-amino acid moiety is installed at C-4 and C-1 of furanoses (ribo, manno, xylo, and lyxo) and at C-5 and C-1 of a pyranose (galacto)

Efficacy of a single milbemycin oxime administration in combination with praziquantel against experimentally induced heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection in cats.

The efficacy of a combination of milbemycin oxime and praziquantel in preventing the establishment of experimentally induced heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection was investigated in a study involving 24 young domestic short-hair cats. The animals were inoculated with 50 infective larvae on day 0. Subsequently they were divided into two groups of 12 animals each. The animals in group 1 were treated once with medicated tablets containing 4 mg milbemycin (minimum dose 2 mg/kg body weight) and 10 mg praziquantel (MILBEMAX(R)) on day 30 after infection. Cats in group 2 received placebo tablets on the same day. On day 183 post-infection a blood sample was taken from each animal before euthanasia and necropsy. The blood samples were tested for the presence of microfilariae and the necropsied animals were examined for the presence of adult worms. Microfilariae were not found in any of the investigated cats. No heartworms were found in the animals in group 1 (treated with medicated tablets). Out of the 12 placebo-treated cats 1 was heartworm-free, whereas all the others were found to be infected with 1-3 adult heartworms

Applications of sugar nitrones in synthesis: The total synthesis of (+)-polyoxin J

    No full text
A convergent synthesis of the peptidyl nucleoside antibiotic (inhibitor of chitin biosynthesis) polyoxin J (2) by coupling of 5-O-carbamoyl polyoxamic acid (3) and thymine polyoxin C (4) is described. These compounds were prepared by chain elongation and amination of sugar-derived aldehydes employing their nitrones as iminium derivatives and the furan ring as a masked carboxyl. Thus, the stereoselective addition of 2-lithiofuran to the L-threose derived N-benzyl nitrone 5 followed by reduction of the resulting hydroxylamine to amine, carbamoylation of the free hydroxy group, and oxidative cleavage of the furan ring to the carboxylate group gave a protected derivative of 3 (30%). The same method was followed for the synthesis of the ribofuranosyl α-amino acid nucleoside 4 (12.6%) starting from the D-ribose derived nitrone 6. The final coupling was performed by the N-hydroxysuccinimide active ester method in DMSO with the Hünig base (i-Pr2EtNH) using a derivative of 3 and unprotected 4
