No full textThis article describes the structure and the psychometric characteristics of a test assessing metalinguistic abilities in late adolescents and adults. The test comprises three subparts, Comprehension, Acceptability and Figurative Language, and in each there is first a question which asseses an intuitive form of metalinguistic awareness and a second one that assesses an explicit, analytic form of metalinguistic awareness. The psychometric characteristics (Test-retest correlations, across-test correlations, Cronbach's alpha and Cohen's index), studied on an Italian sample of 621 participants from 17 to 50 y. -olds, are all satisfactory

No full textThis research study explores the relations between Italian / Vernacular bilingualism in primary school children in a Southern region of Italy, Campania. 202 5th graders (m.a.: 10,6 y.) were recruited, subdivided into balanced and non-balanced Italian-vernacular bilinguals and into high and low socio-cultural background groups. They were all administered some subtests of an Italian metalinguistic ability test (TAM-2, Pinto, Candilera, Iliceto, 2003). Results showed that balanced bilinguals, whatever the socio-cultural background, outperformed their non-balanced peers in metalinguistic abilities

No full textThe article focuses on the problematic of metaphor comprehension in autistic children, and illustrates some cases of high-functioning subjects tested with a specific test of metaphor comprehension, validated for Italian younger typically developing children, the junior Test of Metaphor Comprehension (junior TCM). Results show both delays with respect to the typically developing children, and idiosyncratic behaviors in processing metaphors, suggesting that figurative language poses specific semantic processing problems to this type of clinical population

No full textThis article presentes the structure and the psychometric characteristics of an Italian test devised for assessing metalinguistic development in the age range between late childhood and early adolescence (9-14 y.). The origins of the test is to be found in D. Hakes' work (1980) but with the introduction of a systematic distinction between two types of questions/responses, the first eliciting intuitive linguistic awareness and the subsequent eliciting explicit awareness. The test is composed of 6 subtests, partly metasemantic, partly metagrammatical, and metapho (Comprehension, Synonymy, Acceptability, Ambiguity, Phonological Segmentation). The psychometric characteristics are all very satisfactory

No full textThe article describes a study on metaphor and metonymy comprehension in subjects aged between 11 and 13 years, which involved 108 students in the 3 Junior High School grades. They were given a Metaphor Comprehension Test (TCM, Pinto, Melogno, Iliceto, 2006), a metonymy comprehension test and the Raven’s Progressive Matrices (Raven, 1982). Results showed a significant and parallel performance increase for the two metasemantic tests, strong correlations between the metasemantic and cognitive measures and a satisfactory Cronbach’s alpha for the metonymy Test
