Implementation of a new bi-directional solar modelling method for complex facades within the ESP-r building simulation program

    No full text
This paper provides an overview of a new method for modelling the total solar energy transmittance. It is implemented in the ESP-r building simulation program to model complex façades such as double glazed façades with external, internal or integrated shading devices. This new model has been validated and tested for several cases. The new model required changes to the solar control simulation algorithm and the user interface, so a new “Advanced optics menu” was also introduced into ESP-r. The paper presents the interface development and application of the new technique to different simulation configurations (especially different complex façades with shading devices) in a standard office building

Physical and mechanical characterization of polypropylene films chemically modified with acrylic acid as grafting agent

    No full text
In this work, the mechanical, optical and transport properties of chemically surface modified polypropylene films were investigated. It was found that physical properties such as light transmittance, water permeation, and wettability were highly influenced by surface modification. On the other hand, the bulk mechanical and fracture properties resulted highly dependent on film orientation but independent of modification.Fil: Clemente, Francesco. Towards the implementation of a BIM-based approach in BIPV sector

    No full text
Nowadays, the stakeholders of the building process are expected to be involved in the Building Information Modelling (BIM) domain in order to support the digitalization of the construction industry. Considering that the building envelope is today one of the most complex parts of a sustainable building, the “BIM-ization” of its construction process could potentially foster the challenge of a more sustainable built environment. This is particularly relevant for multifunctional systems producing energy such as “solar skins”. Typically, today the building process is highly fragmented so that the information flow is not linear, many information is lost, are missing or need to be re-entered with additional rework and request for information. An integrated and collaborative digital process would reduce efforts, time, repetitive work, risk of mistakes, information losses, etc., transforming an almost “manual” and fragmented work into an interoperable workflow along the value chain. BIM creates efficiency and users will get several benefits. Digitalization of solar building envelopes, since it is a multidisciplinary field, requires dedicated specifications on information modelling/management, process workflows, interoperability aspects and BIM levels to adopt. The paper will present an insight on the adoption of a BIM-based approach to ensure the reduction of process inefficiencies and unforeseen clashes for the implementation of BIPV building skins. Along with a review of the existing framework concerning the definition of a reference process for the PV value-chain, it will focus on the discussion of BIM requirements for solar building envelope systems and in a first definition of the information categories for the main Levels of Development (LOD) of BIPV components. After presenting also a practical example of digitalization for a BIPV customized module, both in terms of geometrical and information modelling, the paper will finally provide basic inputs concerning approaches to support real workflows for higher BIM maturity levels in BIPV sector. The advantages of adopting a digital process and the interoperability levels will be also discussed, in order to provide inputs for the main stakeholders in improving the process efficiency and controlling costs

Load Separation Principle in Determination of J-R curve for Ductile Polymers: Suitability of Different Material Deforrmation Functions Used in the Normalization Method

    No full text
The load separation principle states thal the load, P, can be represented as the multiplication of two independent functions: a crack geometry function, G(a), and a material deformation function, H(v). The principle constitutes the theoretical basis for the single-specimen J-integral experiment and the incremental calculation of J-integral crack growth reaislance (J-R) curves. The normalization method is a new method, which assumes load separation and uses characteristic deformation properties of materials to relate load, displacement and crack length in a functional form. From the deformation material function or "material key curve", J-R curve can be developed from a single precracking experiment. This investigation deals with the applicability of the load separation criterion to evaluation of ductile fracture mechanics parameters in rubber-modified polystyrene, polypropylene, rubber-modified PMMA, ABS resin and high-density polyethylene in the bending configuration. Different mathematical relationships for the deformation function (power law function, LMN function and combined power law straight line relationship) have been proposed and compared. The resulting J-R curves are in good agreement with those obtained by the traditional multiple-specimen technique. The results presented here imply that the use of a single load-displacement method for evaluation of J-integrals for ductile polymers is possible and hence also the normalization method can be used for evaluation of J-R curves from a single-test record

Logic Synthesis for Switching Lattices by Decomposition with P-Circuits

    No full text
In this paper we propose a novel approach to the synthesis of minimal-sized lattices, based on the decomposition of logic functions. Since the decomposition allows to obtain circuits with a smaller area, our idea is to decompose Boolean functions with separate lattices, according to the P-circuits decomposition scheme, and then to implement the decomposed blocks with physically separated regions in a single lattice. Experimental results show that about 35% of the considered benchmarks achieve a smaller area when implemented using the proposed decomposition for switching lattices, with an average gain of at least 24%

Third-order methods from quadrature formulae for solving systems of non-linear equations

    No full text
We extend to p-dimensional problems a modification of the Newton method, based on quadrature formulas of order at least one, which produces iterative methods with order of convergence three. A general error analysis providing the higher order of convergence is given. These new methods may be more efficient then other third-order methods as they do not require the use of the second-order Frechet derivative
