    Prevalence of antibody to hepatitis A virus in healthy individuals of Milan

    We have studied by radioimmunoassay the prevalence of antibody to hepatitis A virus in 436 randomly selected individuals of Milan according to age and sex. Taken together, 70% of subjects provided serological evidence of exposure to HAV. Both sexes resulted similarly immunized (69.7% females and 70.7% males). The anti-HAV prevalence was found to be directly related to age, being on the increase from childhood to adulthood and reaching its peak (9l.5%) in people over fifty. An analysis of the distribution of anti-HAV according to presence or absence of anti-HBs in induviduals under 30 years, revealed that anti-HAV was detectable more frequently in individuals anti-HBs positive than in those without such evidence in sera (71.4% versus 39.7%; P less than 0.01). Finally, 96 sera from children and adolescents of low socioeconomic standard of living were also investigated. In these subjects anti-HAV prevalence was found to be higher than in their counterparts randomly slected from general population

    Presence of HBeAg, DNA polymerase activity, Dane particle in different categories of HBsAg carriers and evidence of hepatitis type B infection in their family contacts

    Two different categories of HBsAg carriers: renal patients on hemodialysis maintenance and blood donors found in routine screening have been examined with regard to Dane particles, DNA polymerase activity and the e antigen. The presence of these markers and signs of hepatitis type B infection in the family contacts was studied. HBeAg was present in 10 of 15 (66.6%) renal patients but in none of the healthy carriers. Among dialysis patients a perfect correlation between Dane particles, DNA polymerase activity and HBeAg was found. In contrast, anti-HBe was detected in 15 of the 28 (53.5%) asymptomatic carriers and in none of the renal patients. No association between anti-HBe with DNA polymerase activity and Dane particles could be found. 2 asymptomatic carriers were DNA polymerase activity and Dane particles positive but HBeAg negative. The apparent non correlation among these markers of infectivity rules out any consideration of the relative insensitivity of the technique used for e antigen detection. The difference in the HBsAg prevalence in family clusters of renal patients and of blood donors compared with healthy individuals as controls was statistically significant (P < 0.01; P < 0.05). In addition, the highest incidence of serological evidence of HBV infection was within the relatives of dialysis patients who were HBeAg, DNA polymerase activity and Dane particles positive and the lowest within the households of HBsAg asymptomatic carriers who were anti-HBe positive. These findings seem to lend additional support to the association between the presence of Dane particles, DNA polymerase activity and HBeAg in sera with risk of HBV infection

    Android-based automatic speech recognition front end to access Web APIs

    An automatic speech-recognition (ASR) front-end was implemented on Android platform to access RESTful API. The purpose was retrieving information from the Internet using speech as primary input. The Android application uses an ASR front-end to recognize uttered words and transform them into text patterns. Then it exploits on board GPS data and RESTful Twitter API to find twits containing the recognized text and coming from users located in a certain area around the device. Implementations of the same algorithm in C and in Java were compared, and performance on the Android platform was evaluated
