Temporal variations of zooplankton biomass in the Ligurian Sea inferred from long time series of ADCP data
Three years of 300 kHz acoustic doppler current profiler data collected in the central Ligurian Sea are analysed to investigate the variability of the zooplankton biomass and the diel vertical migration in the upper thermocline. After a pre-processing phase aimed at avoiding the slant range attenuation, hourly volume backscattering strength time series are obtained. Despite the lack of concurrent net samples collection, different migration patterns are identified and their temporal variability examined by means of time-frequency analysis. The effect of changes in the environmental condition is also investigated. The highest zooplankton biomasses are observed in April-May just after the peak of surface primary production in March-April. The main migration pattern found here points to a "nocturnal" migration, with zooplankton organisms occurring deeper in the water column during the day and shallower at night. Also, twilight migration is highlighted during this study. The largest migrations are recorded in November-December, corresponding to lowest backscattering strength values and they are likely attributable to larger and more active organisms (i.e. euphausiids and mesopelagic fish). The results suggest further applications of the available historical acoustic doppler current profiler time series. © 2014 Author(s)

A new analytical model for the elastic-plastic behaviour of spot welded joints subjected to orthogonal load
An analytical procedure for the evaluation of the elastic-plastic stiffness behaviour of spot welded joints is presented. The procedure is based on a new model of spot weld region: a circular plate having variable thickness with a central rigid nugget, which is resolved using an original analytical method. The closed-form solution allows to describe the displacement of a rigid nugget when an axial orthogonal load is applied on the plate while plasticity and large deflections are present. The goal is to reach a reliable spot weld region model which can be used as the basis to develop a spot weld element in FE analysis even when plasticity and large deflections are in effect. The procedure is as completely original as no other can be found in the technical literature, and it has been applied to some examples of plates usually employed for spot weld analysis. The analytical results obtained by using the new general relations precisely match those obtained modelling spot weld area by FEA. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms in major depressive disorder correlate with clinical severity and mixed features
Obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) are often reported in patients with bipolar disorder. The aim of this study was to investigate OCS and their related clinical features in major depressive disorder (MDD). The analysis involved 482 outpatients with MDD collected within the Combining Medications to Enhance Depression outcomes trial, who were assessed with scales for depression, suicidality, irritability, hypomanic symptomatology, and other comorbid psychiatric manifestations. OCS were reported in 27% of the sample. Patients with MDD experiencing OCS were found to differ from those not experiencing OCS by a greater severity of depression (d = 0.41, P = 0.0001), more hypomanic symptoms (d = 0.48, P < 0.0001) and mixed features (22% vs. 10%, P = 0.001), increased levels of suicidal thoughts (d = 0.40, P = 0.0001), a lower likelihood of achieving remission after antidepressant treatment (19% vs. 33%, P = 0.0109), as well as more comorbid anxiety disorders (i.e. panic disorder: d = 0.98, P < 0.0001; generalized anxiety disorder: d = 0.74, P < 0.0001; social phobia: d = 0.71, P < 0.0001), and post-traumatic stress disorder (d = 0.81, P < 0.0001). In light of these findings, clinicians should pay more attention to the occurrence of OCS in MDD, as these symptoms may reflect greater clinical severity, poorer treatment outcome, and increased risk for bipolarity
